Each review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

It is not really comfortable to sleep, dryer for clothes didn’t really dry even after one hour…beside that everything was fine.
It is traditional Japan house, really kind friendly staff. Location was okay, near bus and metro station.

-The locker in our room door, not very clever lock the door inside without the key because you can leave your keys in the room and lock them.
+ friendly and always helpful staff +fully equiped kitchen + climatization in the room +recieved bigger room than we should get! :-)))))

The wifi was pretty poor (dropping out, not connecting, slow). The showers could have been a bit cleaner. The communal room was nice, but also a little old.
Great location, super friendly and welcoming staff. Simple, but clean and comfortable rooms (great AC). Tea and coffee provided in communal area. Clean toilets.

quintessential hostel experience - a dirt cheap private room for my friends and I to crash in in gion. Staff were friendly and we had several amusing conversations.

The only downside was the rather thin walls and loud neighbours in the room next to us, but thin walls come with the traditional aesthetic and there's nothing the owners would be able to do about slightly noisy guests.
Really nice living area downstairs with a kitchen + free tea and coffee, and we had a cute, traditional style room with futons. The owners were great, there was no language barrier and they were funny so enjoying a coffee in the living area while having a chat was fun :) Also it's in a part of Kyoto that allowed accessing the city to be easy.

The room is sad and I got bitten by some weird bug. I got bites all over my body and is itchy as hell. The place was super noisy, drunk people at night going up and down the stairs, and other people slamming doors and speaking very loud.
People working there where kind.

The only thing I wasn't too keen on was the really bad cushioning between the futon and the floor
I like nearly everything had no real complaints at all. The staff was awesome, the main area was nice and comfortable. The room was awesome. It was nearly ideal for anything I can think of.

Everything was amazing ! From the staff, to the rooms, to the bathrooms. The manager is extremely nice and made me feel at home. A warm and welcoming place in one of Kyoto's best locations.

the dirtiest accommodation I have ever stayed in. Dirt and crumbs all over shared areas. the toilet sinks looked like they had never been wiped. the bedding had bits in it and didn’t look like it had been washed. the towel smelt of urine. Very strong smell in the rooms Staff can be loud late at night. some of them seem very uninterested when I was trying to ask for help (staring at phone and giving lacklustre answers) the kitchen was not very clean this accommodation will do if you’re not fussy about dirt/mess but I wouldn’t recommend for people who are
AC was good good water pressure in showers/taps cheap Laundry (although the washer doesn’t work that well)

it was cosy! the main lounge and kitchen area is where it’s poppin’ with staff and guests together. had a great time listening to everyone’s adventures and future travel plans! Bruno the manager was great company and it was legit funny listening to his stories whilst living in Japan for the last 7 months! 🤣🤣

There wasn’t any hot water for the whole 3 days of our stay, which is unacceptable. The rooms are also Japanese style which means you are on the floor with a mattress. The mattress was incredibly thin so we woke up in pain. We ended up finding a hotel for our final night in Kyoto for the same price, we had our own bathroom, towels, robes hot water, I’d recommend looking at alternative accommodation. The place was clean ish but cleaning equipment had been left out, like the dustpan and brush which was pretty grotty.
Staff were friendly. The place felt quite homey with nicely painted walls.
