Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

We loved our stay at agora base. The apartment was wonderful and comfortable for a family of 4. The apartment has been very well thought out and it had everything we required for our two night stay. The roof top was a bonus.

Wasn’t a problem for us, but steep path to the property and narrow steps to the rooftop might present a challenge for someone with mobility issues.
Fantastic location for seeing the area, located right beside the cable car. Well designed apartment that makes good use of the space. Rooftop balcony is a fun addition. We really enjoyed being here and wished we’d booked another day.

We truly enjoyed our stay at the accommodation and was able to unwind and relax after a full day out discovering Hakone! It was right near the Open Air Museum and fairly close to the station! Only thing is there is a steep hill when getting to the place, but there is an alleyway where you can avoid the uphill by going down from the accommodation (unfortunately does not show on Google Maps). Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the place was so spacious and clean! Easy to retrieve the key as well! Thank you again!

Couldn’t tell if it was the sulphur smell or poor vent stacks, but there was sometimes a foul smell.
Unique property, comfortable space, good amenities! Close to train station and restaurants.

It was a little hard to get to with luggage as no real path to the unit.
The cottage was excellent for a small group and the beds were very comfortable. The little town was beautiful.

Very convenient location to all activities around Gora station. Very clean and comfortable for our family's stay. It was equipped with everything you would need. We had a lovely stay!

It was a little difficult finding how to get to it. Also we heard several rooftop footsteps, but when we investigated there was no one there. I think it was the family below and the noises echoed throughout. Oh and the steep slope to walk up from the station was a bit unexpected with our luggage in tow.
The simplicity of the home was perfect for the 2 nights we were there. We are a family of 8 so it worked out. We managed with just 1 toilet and 1 shower. And we liked having access to the rooftop. It was clean and sufficient.

the only minor thing that would have helped was the information in the black information book was mostly in Japanese. although the information about where to get dinner was in English which was helpful.
We booked this last minute to arrive in less than 1 week. We received excellent communication from the hosts and everything worked out perfectly for us. We thoroughly enjoyed the accomodation.

A few hooks to hang backpacks would have been great. Also the step to the living/dining area kept getting missed by us so we tripped several times.
Communication was very responsive, the home was beautifully designed and thoughtfully organized. We were very comfortable as a family of five staying there, and the location was wonderful to all the sights we wanted to see.

There are not a lot of restaurants locally, so you have to plan ahead.
It was a perfect stay for our family of three relaxing in the hillside of Gora base B. The space was well thought out for open plan living. Great comfy beds with bedside lights to read at night. Roof terrace with views to relax in fine weather, (steep stair to access terrace). It was close to some of the local attractions. Fast response from the property manager.

Such a cute apartment, beautifully decorated. My kids loved the platform beds and roof terrace. Fabulous location. We wished we could have stayed longer. Next door to the Ghibli house accommodation, and it was like being in Totoro!

Very small no place to put your bags or clothes. The stairs to the balcony indeed very steep.
