Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. United StatesNothing, it was perfect
Magome is like a fairytale, a beautiful town surrounded by mountains. Our stay at Sakanomichi made this magical place even more enchanting. The owners Ken & Yuki are the kindest people and took time to provide directions and recommendations for our hike on the Old Nakasendo Trail. They even provided frozen water bottles and bells to scare away the bears. We enjoyed talking with them. They are very genuine and clearly go above and beyond to ensure that all guests have a lovely stay. We ate dinner there, and the food was delicious and we enjoyed local sake and gin. The room was beautiful and had a view of the mountains and you could hear the gentle sound of the stream flowing outside. There are many private bathrooms and showers downstairs and I never had to wait to use either. The house was very well kept and had everything needed. We loved our stay and wish that we could have stayed longer. Just thinking about it warms my heart and we are so grateful for Ken and Yuki’s hospitality.

AustraliaThe evening meal would be better if it was served in some lovely Japanese pottery/ceramics rather than the stainless steel tray.
The property has been beautifully and stylishly renovated by Ken and Yuki. The recycled wood panelling, and ancestral furniture is warm and inviting. The bar was a lovely surprise.

United KingdomNothing - it was all great.
We loved everything about this. The owners were amazing from the moment we met them. We had a minor issue with our luggage transfer and they sorted this for us with no hassle. The home made dinner was incredible. Lovely breakfast. Our room had a beautiful view and we would 100% recommend. Washing facilities which helped us in the middle of our trip. For a shared accommodation it also had 3 showers and toilets so there was never any queue or stress about others being in the shower when you needed. It was all brilliant. Highly recommend.

United StatesHmm I don’t think there was anything I did not like.
This place was great and such a cool experience while we explored Japan for the first time! We stopped in Magome for 1 night between Tokyo and Kyoto. Such a beautiful town and it was nice to break up our packed itinerary with a peaceful evening here. Yuki was super nice and funny too. She made homemade plum wine which was really nice, and she helped with maps and plans when we arrived. Ken helped with our luggage, as we did not realize how steep Magome was until we arrived. The breakfast was really good too. The guest house was nicely decorated and our room had views of the mountains. It was very peaceful and quiet. Super clean. They also booked us a dinner reservation at an amazing restaurant in town which ended up being one of my favorite meals during the 10 day trip. Overall it was an awesome stay!

Spain-
I truly loved everything about this place. The staff are beyond words - so attentive to details, caring, and thoughtful, offering ice for trekking, preparing a lovely breakfast, keeping everything spotless, and taking the time to talk with us. The decoration is elegant, the room is very comfortable, and the views from the bed are simply beautiful. I sincerely hope to have the health and money to return to Japan many times and stay again with Yuki and Ken.

United KingdomThat we didn't stay more nights.
We loved everything about our stay. Ken and Yuki were absolutely amazing hosts in every single way. From the moment we stepped in they took care of us to make sure we would have the perfect time in Magome. They made sure they knew our onward journey plans to ensure that we had enough time to make it for trains at Nagiso Station. They took time to then explain all of the things we should not miss in the area and gave us a lovely drink and chocolate at the same time. After a long journey this is just what we needed. They were just lovely to chat too and a lovely couple 😍😍😍😍 The house is stunning. You can see the care and attention to detail that ken and Yuki have put into every single aspect. The details are traditional, but with a modern twist. Everything is spotless clean. The showers all look brand new. There are also plenty of toilets and showers to facilitate the whole house. Dinner was amazing. We had the chicken and vegetarian options and we didn't leave a thing. It was just stunning and very tasty. Drinks are also available to purchase so you have everything you need for a lovely evening. We even played cards afterwards which was a nice way to end the evening. Breakfast was simple, but perfect and set us up for our day hiking in the area. The area is amazing. The bedroom was very comfortable and we both had a lovely night's sleep. Thank you ken and Yuki for an unforgettable stay. My only regret is that we didn't stay a bit longer. We have already decided we will come back in the autumn one year and stay with you again. You should be very proud of what you have achieved with Sakanomichi. It is beautiful. From the girls who went to Hakata. 😍😍😍😍

PhilippinesNone!
I'm afraid my words will not be enough to express how much I loved my stay here. Kenさん and Yukiさん were extremely welcoming. I enjoyed my conversations with them, learning about Magome-juku, umeshu, and many other things despite my very lacking Japanese skills. When it was time for me to leave and embark on my hike to Tsumago-juku, they ran after me to give me a bottle of iced water to help me with the summer heat. I almost teared up from their kindness. I was on a solo trip for my birthday and they gave me the most memorable moment of my trip. Other things to note about this guesthouse: Room: I'm not sure about the other rooms but I secured the best one. It had an amazing view of Magome-juku. There is only a futon but it was very comfortable. The room is air-conditioned and although not sound-proof, Magome is quiet and you can hear the peaceful sounds of water flowing through the canals at night. Shared spaces: The shared spaces include the dining area, living area, toilets, showers, and an indoor bath. There is also a laundry area which you can use for a small fee (about 500 yen if I'm not mistaken). Reception is not 24/7 and the lights out is at 10pm I think. The shared spaces are not only clean, but they're also beautifully designed! Lots of dried flowers as decoration. Meals: You can opt to have dinner and breakfast here again for a small fee. Dinner is Indian curry and let me just say-- it was delicious! I had the spicy chicken keema, although personally I wish it was a bit spicier. The homemade yogurt was simply amazing. Breakfast is a simple spread of eggs, bread, yogurt, cereals, a variety of fruits, and drinks such as homemade juice and coffee from the coffee shop down the street. This was again very good and I enjoyed it more than I expected. I feel like Magome is a one-time destination because of its size, but I definitely want to come back and stay at sakanomichi again!

AustraliaCan't fault anything, it was all perfect.
Both dinner, cooked to order, and breakfast were amazing. Rice was from the hotel owner's fileds, plum wine from fruit of the owners' garden. Amongst other things, we had homemade yogurt and homemade jam in the morning. This minshuku style place was impeccably clean! The room, in traditional Japanese style, had very comfortable futton beds. We had a blissful sleep after a day of hiking all the way from Nakatsugawa to Ochiai and finally Magome. This hotel is right on the main street of the beautiful Magome post town. We were extremely happy with everything and will be back!

DenmarkNothing not to like!
This is a great guest house. Not your standard anonymous 4-5 star hotel. If you want something a bit more authentic, with a great ambience and very friendly hosts, then you should hurry to reserve a room. The rooms are simple, but comfortable. The showers and toilets are shared, but clean and plenty. The guest house only has a few rooms, so never crowded. The town …very original! (An old postal town)
