Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

AustraliaThat we only booked for one night :) everything was perfect
This ryokan was by far the best stay and experience we had during our 3 week trip through Japan. The staff, hostesses, facilities, Japanese bath, breakfast and rooms were absolutely fantastic. They also gave us awesome recommendations for local restaurants (which were the best of our trip as well!)

SpainWe loved everything about this Riokan :]
Wonderful Riokan in the heart of Kyoto. Beautiful building, gardens, and traditional rooms. Very comfortable tatami beds. Amazing Japanese breakfast with a great selection of foods. They even accommodated my gluten intolerance, which is not easy in Japan! Relaxing traditional wooden bath, not to be missed. And the best of all is the welcoming and curteous staff, who go out of their way to help you and make you feel at home, making your trip really memorable. We will definitely repeat if we go back to Kyoto!

United States of AmericaI loved it all.
The Japanese breakfast was really different and delicious for us. Know what you are signing up for before you go. It is not what most Americans might expect. You will have a shared bathroom and even shared bath water. It’s very communal. You may have to walk stairs at night to use the toilet.

SingaporeIn a house that is 100 years old, it is meticulously maintained. Even though the bathrooms had to be shared (as of most old houses in Japan), the 2 bath rooms are in absolutely good condition and very modern. My room (Satsuki) is the only one with its own toilet, but it was outside of the room, at the side of my own walkable garden. When I was staying there, the weather was cold but not freezing cold yet so I was still able to walk out into the garden to access the toilet. Something to note if you are visiting this Ryokan in the winter. As mentioned by many, the bath rooms are to be reserved and the house is old so it is not very soundproof. However, during my stay, the people who are staying there as well were very respectful and very quiet, so I did not experience any disturbance. I would like to specially mention that the staffs of this Ryokan are extremely hospitable and would really go out their way to help in any way possible. During my short stay, I had met many of the staffs and they were all consistently accommodating and helpful. It was really a pleasant stay!

I had an amazing experience staying at this ryokan in Kyoto. The staff is incredibly hospitable, warm, and friendly. This 115 year old building is exceptionally maintained and has modern amenities. Make sure you take advantage of the Japanese-style bath! I stayed in the Aoi room which was beautiful and I loved the yukata-style wear provided. It truly felt like I was transported to old time Japan and I loved my stay here! The add-on Japanese breakfast was so delicious. Thank you so much for everything! I would love to come back and stay again.

United Arab EmiratesBy far one of the best places we have ever stayed at. It was absolute luxury. The room was extremely comfortable. And there isn't enough I can say about the staff - so polite, accommodating and sweet. We had requested vegetarian breakfast and they went out of their way to arrange it for us. The "mother chef" really put her heart into it. The breakfast spread was better than at most 5-star hotels. It was served right in the room. The library at the Ryokan was the best thing about the stay. The collection of teas, the soothing music and the cookies made it a little room to relax in and let your worries slip. An absolute gem! Totally recommend it.

United States of AmericaSuch a hidden gem Ryokan in the heart of Kyoto! Super convenient location and friendly and welcoming stuff, the Ryokan is built on a historical site: every room is unique and well decorated to take you back hundreds of years to the traditional Japanese life. The garden view is spectacular, and traditional bathtub is awesome, and the breakfast is so good! Highly recommend to anyone who will visit Kyoto and wanna try an authentic Ryokan experience!

United States of AmericaBreakfast was amazing, the whole place was so cool. The tour of the property helped us to understand the history of the building . The coffee, snacks, and teas were all delicious. Some of the brands of the snacks were what we were looking for throughout Kyoto! I wish we could have stayed longer ! They even waved us off goodbye when we left . We had one member of our party who arrived super early in the morning and accommodated them joining us for breakfast even though they did not stay over night . The bath was great after a long day of walking around and we got to reserve it multiple times . Would highly highly recommend.

MalaysiaAlthough we only stayed for one night, it was delightful! Love the comfortable futon beds and pillows! The garden was serene and beautifully kept and our room had the perfect view! When I mentioned that it was our wedding anniversary, they even reserved a private toilet for us which would otherwise be shared with the other guests. We hardly saw the other guests, so there is no concerns with privacy. They also left us an anniversary gift! How thoughtful! The wonderful staff were the best! Impeccable service! Our host recommended a good place for our dinner and she even walked us there! The private onsen was lovely - clean and well kept! The library was a special place to relax with plenty of delicious Japanese snacks and drinks! The breakfast was delicious! Totally authentic Japanese! We highly recommend this ryokan! Thank you Toshiharu for an excellent experience!

United States of AmericaThe point of staying at the ryokan (we stayed 2 nights) is to have a truly traditional Japanese experience. But, it is not for everyone. Sleeping on the tatami mat is difficult for anyone with back problems, like myself. However, I expected I’d struggle a bit with that and was willing to take the chance in order to have the ryokan experience.
The best part of the Ryokan experience was the peace and calm that overcomes you as soon as you enter the door. You are greeted by the most polite and caring staff members who seem genuinely happy to see you. The inclusive breakfast was very traditional Japanese style with an array of delicate and delicious small plates. Nothing sweet, all savory and included a little fish. Tea is served but not coffee. The location of the Ryokan was ideal for reaching main thoroughfares and many other main attractions such as Gion. There are many restaurants nearby, plus several cafes in case you’re a coffee drinker (a Starbucks is about a 5 min walk).
