How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

Verified reviewWe had an amazing stay at Jayalath Homestay. Nilusha, the host, is incredibly kind and helpful. From the warm welcome with a refreshing drink to her constant willingness to assist, she made us feel completely at home. We booked just a room, but were pleasantly surprised to find it was a spacious, spotlessly clean apartment, complete with air conditioning, a small kitchen, and a refrigerator. It was perfect, especially for a longer stay, so we ended up extending our visit by two more nights. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and generous, with the hoppers being our favorite! Nilusha even took the time to teach us how to make them ourselves, a wonderful experience we’ll take home with us. The location is great too, just a 25–30 minute walk to Galle Fort, or a quick and affordable ride using PickMe. If we had more time in Sri Lanka, we would have stayed longer. Without a doubt, we will return to Jayalath Homestay on our next trip to Sri Lanka!

Verified reviewI felt the warmth of family here, and I truly wish I had more time to stay. The host took care of me like a mother, and when I lost my bag on the way to Galle, Kasuni also helped me like an elder sister. I really enjoyed the time I spent with them — chatting, cooking, and just being together. I’ve now returned home safely. Thank you for everything. Next time, I’ll bring my sister with me to visit you too！I will miss you:)

Just one bottle of water for 3 occupants. Additional bottles are charged No AC. Blankets werer tiny.

You had booked a non-AC Family room, which is a more budget-friendly option. We also offer that room with AC at a higher rate, and this was available at the time of booking. If you had informed us of your preference, we would have been happy to offer you the room with AC for an additional charge. Since the room you booked was a non-AC option, we couldn’t include air conditioning at that rate. At just $14 for three people, it's difficult for us to cover the higher electricity costs that come with AC usage. Hope you will understand this. Regarding the water bottles, as this is a homestay and not a hotel, we do our best to keep prices very affordable. We also have to purchase bottled water ourselves from local stores, so unfortunately we aren’t able to provide them free of charge. We also wanted to mention that while we only charged you for one water bottle, two were taken, and the amount paid by you for the one water bottle also was less than the actual cost. You were the only guests who asked for free water bottles. Additionally, you stayed beyond the standard checkout time but also we allowed you to keep your luggage in the room until the evening, without any extra charge, which we were happy to do to assist you. Verified reviewGreat and lovely apartment. Useful equipment, small kitchen area (no gas for cooking atm) with fridge and water boiler. Washroom was very good. Beds are comfortable with mosquito net. The ac didn't had a remote control atm. The apartment ist very big with nice balcony. The breakfast was local and very delicious. Thanks so much for everything, Nilusha.

Just to clarify, you booked the Triple Room with Balcony, which is listed as not including kitchen facilities or air conditioning, as it is offered as a room-only option. Full kitchen access with a gas cooker and air conditioning is available in the Apartment option, which comes at a different rate due to the additional amenities. So if you had requested gas or air conditioning during your stay, I would have been happy to provide the gas cooker and AC remote for an additional charge. Verified reviewNilusha was lovely. The perfect host…. Interesting and friendly. And helpful in any way she could be. She made the most delicious breakfasts… Sri Lankan in style. The accommodation was perfect, clean, and as it was an apartment, it had everything you could need. It was spacious, and actually it was our best accommodation of all 8 locations that we stayed in Sri Lanka over three and a half weeks. It was in a residential area, very safe, and actually walk of about 20 minutes from the fort and railway station, or a 250 rupees tuctuc journey.

Verified reviewWe stayed here for a couple of nights, it's a little bit of a distance to Galle Fort but you can catch a bus or walk if it's not too hot. Our homestay host was the best! If you like Sri Lankan food do have her dinner and breakfast which are delicious (extra cost.) A very reasonably priced homestay and one of the best hosts we've had in the month we have been here. Highly recommend.

The mattress is very hard, making sleep quite uncomfortable at the end of the second night.

Verified reviewThis place has a super friendly host. The room is very spacious. it also has a garden. It is a short ride in tuktuk from the railway station and the tuktuk are also available during any time of the day.
There’s no AC but it didn’t matter much to us as there was a huge fan.

A bit out from the fort area. You have to pay about 500 lk for tuk tuk to get around.
Thanks for your review! But regarding transportation, if you used the PickMe or Uber, the fare to the fort is usually around 210 LKR, so you might not have needed to pay 500 LKR. We wish you all the best :)
