How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Verified reviewIt was a large family room. Everything was very clean. Breakfast was wonderful with plenty of food! We ate on a balcony overlooking the forest full of trees and birds. For the room rate, it was excellent value.
The hotel did not provide dinner, so we had to go to a restaurant. The bathroom facilities should be improved, especially the shower. Access to the hotel is very difficult. Our driver could not get through with the car, so we had to rent a tuk-tuk to carry the luggage.

Verified reviewThe property itself is amazing with the location and extremely pleasant to stay. With the restaurant down the hill and the spectacular night sky. But that's not the best thing about this stay, it's the host Madusha. She is simply the best host I've seen in my travel experience, this is despite the language barrier. Her food presentation and making sure the guest gets everything without asking. If there is such a thing as a perfect host then for me it's Madusha. I will definitely stay here again.
thank you so much 🙏

Verified reviewNethsara cottage is beautiful tranquil place nestled in the mountains with gorgeous views. What makes it extra special is the wonderful host who goes that extra mile to make sure your stay is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. She is so so lovely. Would 100% recommend. Outside the hustle of Ella.

Verified reviewMaybe one of the loveliest rooms we booked in our 3 weeks in Sri Lanka. It had 2 beds, a porch and a view on the opposite hill with a Buddhist temple. It is not in downtown Ella but you get the view, so it's a question of taste. Breakfast was served on the porch and was delicious. The owner was great and helped us organize our pickup to and from the cottage as well as a driver to go to Yala.
The nearby restaurant is fine (the yellow rice is tastier than their curry) but does not have enough options for people staying more than 2 nights.
thank you ❤️

Verified reviewReally gorgeous views from our front porch of nature and the temple. Loved the ability to sit on our porch for meals and for hanging out on the chairs. Room was clean. No AC but none needed at least where we stay in Ella. In the mountains, it’s much cooler than the coast and we used the duvets to sleep! Abundant big breakfasts!!
The only issue is the property is not on a Main Street and some random tuk tuks we paid to take us home refused to drive us back up the last 300 meters so we had to walk, in the rain! Our driver and sedan couldn’t make it up either as it was so steep. We had to pay a tuk tuk just to help us with our luggage on that last section. If you need transport use the tuk tuk driver recommended by the hosts. He always picked us up and drove us everywhere no problem, including to the tea plantation. Might not be an issue for super light travelers. But we were a family with 4 small backpacks and two carry on roller suitcases and struggled a bit. Although really loved our views and cleanliness of the property and the food, if I were to visit Ella again, I might consider paying more and staying on a main road.
thank you

Verified reviewVery friendly owner, delicious breakfest and amazing view!! Best home stay that we had in Sri Lanka.
Be aware that it is a bit difficult to get there (tuk tuk is 1000 from ella) and it is bit fat from the city.
thank you 🙏

Verified reviewWe absolutely loved this stay. Madusha introduced herself as soon as I made the booking, and her attentiveness and kindness continued through to helping us navigate the way to the property in our tuktuk when we got lost and greeting us with tea and biscuits. Later she provided us with the contact details for a driver into the town in the evenings, and did laundry for us too. The breakfast was fantastic and we were served an abundance of food at the time we chose each morning. The property itself is in the most stunning settings up in the hills, with a huge private terrace to yourself to relax and eat breakfast. The room itself was very comfortable, and the curtains very thick so light didn’t stream in. I had a great sleep both nights. One of the mornings we were there, it rained heavily, and we enjoyed sitting out on the terrace for a few hours listening to the forest and watching the wildlife. We saw so many different types of birds, as well as some monkeys who climbed on the roof one day! We loved the experience at this lovely cottage, which had everything we needed, including a wonderful host. We would come back in a heartbeat. Thank you Madusha!
thank you so much ❤️

Verified reviewThe property has two rooms, Room 1 with 3 beds, and Room 2 with 4 beds. We stayed in Room No.1. Mrs.Madusha the owner has paid attention to details. The room is spotless clear with all necessary needs. Excellent breakfast and food.
The approach road is rough, and steep. Once we reach the guesthouse, the calm and peace is invaluable.

Verified reviewIt was my second time to Nethsara cottage. It is a lovely place. Its looked much better in real that on the booking pictures and you will get much more that you pay for it. The food its delicious and always so big portion ;) you can not finish the whole portion. The lady who its running this place its super nice. First time I reached the location by a small car and second time by tuk tuk :) if you are looking for a quiet place with nice view close to the main Ellas street thats the right place. Very recommended.

Verified reviewWe picked Nethsara because it was a family run accommodation just outside the centre. We thought it would be friendly, peaceful with great food. We also wanted to meet and support local people rather than just stay in a big hotel. Nethsara was this and much more. The room was spotless, had a great shower, a fridge and a kettle. It had a fan though we didn't need it. Madusha was friendly and hospitable. She cooked a great Sri Lankan breakfast which was so big we had enough fruit to eat in the evening. Upon request, she made us dial and hoppers. She also did our washing for a good price. She put us in touch with a lovely lad who became our tuk-tuk driver for the duration ( he charged a very fair rate and can be trusted to give you a price that undercuts other local drivers- just go with him. He is called Kavi) The view is really beautiful and you can see Ella Temple in the distance-- go, it is fabulous.
Some people have pointed out that the road is uneven and difficult to drive the last km. Yes it is a bit steep but the local tuk tuk driver thought it was fine, as did another couple who stayed and arrived in their own rented tuk tuk. Night time is ok too. So really, there is no issue.
thank you so much 😉❤️

Verified reviewIt was the nicest accomidation we had so far and might have on our journey in SriLanka. It is very clean, even for european standards and it is very good eqipped. Best beds i ever had in this category. The host is lovely and always reachable via WhatsApp. Its a little far from the center and not easy to reach, but therefor it is quiet and you have an amazing view.
