How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Verified reviewMy husband and I spent 3 nights at Niyagama House. We really enjoyed the Bliss Yoga package with Elka as well as the morning meditation. Elka is an excellent yoga teacher moulding her classes to suit the participants. After 4 days of yoga, swimming, wonderful food and accommodation we felt fantastic! The whole experience is highly recommended.
Dear Gillian, it was such a pleasure to have the both of you here as our guests, after you came here last year during a stay with your family close by as day guests for my yoga. Thank you so much for this wonderful review, which also made the whole team very happy :-). Many greetings from the tea plantation and keep up your good yoga practice, Elke

Verified reviewOutstanding, attentive, personal service in a really beautiful house and gardens. Very quiet, super food, great pool, fun yoga classes. The free meditation and tea in your room are a lovely touch.
Not a complaint but would love to see a greater range of local tea available, and maybe some cake to go with it!

Verified reviewNiyagama was simply stunning and we had such a relaxing stay for 3 nights after our tour that we didn’t venture out again, except for a morning walk around the village meeting the friendly locals. There is such attention to detail at the property and the staff are wonderful. We didn’t come for a retreat but we did enjoy the daily morning meditation and a couple of wonderful yin yoga classes, as we are beginners. The pool is huge for the number of guests with lovely sun beds and two towels for added comfort. All our meals were on the veranda and absolutely delicious and home cooked with quality ingredients. We loved tea on any of the balconies watching the monkeys. I thought I would miss the beach but this was such a different, warm and peaceful experience that completed our special travels to Sri Lanka. Thank you Elke and staff for making us feel so welcome and pampered.

Verified reviewSuch a memorable and rejuvenating stay with the generous and kind Elke and team. Delicious, clean food (best breakfast I had in Sri Lanka!) and it was so relaxing watching the monkeys in the trees from the room and walking barefoot throughout. Would recommend having a treatment, I had a great wrap. The team have mastered the small details, and there is a huge pool.. the list goes on!

Verified reviewOur second visit to Niyagama house and it was just as perfect as the first time. Elke and her team provide a brilliant service, we were so well looked after with a lovely room, great food, brilliant yoga classes and big pool. Gorgeous setting and possible to walk a 5k circuit from house which we did every day. It’s 15 mins from Galle fort in a car.
Can’t think of a single thing.

Verified reviewI completely agree with an earlier review that people shopping at this price point should look elsewhere—there are far better options available in the area. We stayed during the high season from January 2nd to 4th, and many comparable hotels, particularly closer to Galle, were priced much lower. This only emphasized how overpriced and underwhelming the experience was. The reviews here seem to come mostly from yoga-focused guests rather than those seeking a well-rounded hotel experience. If you’re coming primarily for the hotel, I strongly advise against staying here—especially since the restaurant is also disappointing, with long waiting times and small portions. I want to emphasize that I usually only write reviews when I have had a positive experience to support those in the hospitality and Hospitality industry. However, my experience here was so disappointing that I feel obligated to share it to help others make an informed choice. Highlights: Beautiful grounds and a comfortable pool. Areas for Improvement: Service & Cleaning: 1. No daily cleaning, only a "turndown service," which only happened once during our stay. 2. Rooms lacked basic amenities like a kettle, tea, and cofee - which should be standard at this price level. 3. Water refill, which should have been available, was nowhere to be found—not even after a premium-priced yoga class. Breakfast: Extra charges for proper coffee instead of instant Nescafé—shocking for a hotel in this price range. Room Experience: 1. WiFi barely worked. 2. Air conditioning was loud, and its light could not be turned off, making it hard to sleep. 3. The curtains were too transparent, making the room bright as soon as the sun rose.
Checkout Policy and Staffing: Apparently, you need to reserve a checkout time slot. Changing this last-minute (from 11:00 to 09:30) was extremely difficult and was met with excuses about being a "small hotel." The repeated excuse of having a "small crew" does not justify the poor service. While staffing limitations may be a challenge, they do not justify poor service at this price point. Either hire more staff to or adjust the prices to reflect the limited service. Guests paying premium rates rightfully expect premium service, regardless of the hotel’s size. Attitude of the Owner: On the last day, when I mentioned we were waiting to pay a bill and that our driver was waiting, the owner's behavior was very rude. She also made no effort anymore to say goodbye or ask, "How was your stay?" This lack of courtesy, combined with her dismissive attitude, was very disappointing and unprofessional. There were even more issues during our stay, but Booking.com limits character space for reviews. We stayed only for 2 days with a packed program, so we didn’t have the time or energy to raise all these issues at the reception. However, such basic expectations should be met without guests needing to complain. Overall: This hotel has potential with its beautiful grounds, but significant improvements in service, amenities, and professionalism are necessary to meet the expectations of its price point. With these adjustments, it could provide a much better experience. Otherwise, prices should be significantly lowered to reflect its current offering.

Verified reviewMy one-week stay at Niyagama House was fabulous with the high standards the facility offers, the green with all those bird sounds in the morning mesmerized me. It was also so relaxing for my body and soul doing meditation & yoga with Elke every day, nourishing myself with the great food from the restaurant. I am looking forward to visiting that 'paradise on earth' again.

Elka & Prasad are excellent hosts, but I have to give an extra special shout out of gratitude for Sanjeewa who ran me around everywhere daily, as a solo traveller I was constantly made to feel safe and well looked after…highly recommended all round.
