How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Verified reviewWhat a beautyfull place. A botanic garden with lovely flowers, all kind of seats, a great swimmingpool and even monkeys in the garden. Beautyfull rooms with lots of space and decorated with style. A good warm shower, nice blacony. A very nice hostess and staff who prepare nice breakfast and always there to give you a good advice for a daytrip or a restaurant.
The only thing is the road from The Spice House to the citycentre, with a lot of trafic and no streetlight or safe footpath. But there are always tuktuks to take you there.

Verified reviewThe Spice House is a little gem in Mirissa set in beautiful gardens, with a lovely swimming pool. Our hosts were very attentive and friendly, offering tips and advice. Our room overlooked the garden, and we loved the colonial style. The rooms are named after spices. Ours was Tamarind. There is a fridge which is useful and access to water, milk, and sugar for tea and coffee. The breakfast was plentiful and very beautifully presented. We really enjoyed Mirissa and staying at The Spice House.
Nothing.

Verified reviewWe loved the very friendly staff, the beautiful gardens, the room which had its own verandah, ceiling fans and air con! We LOVED the pool which was so beautiful and peaceful and cool! The breakfast was fabulous and the location up behind the chaos of the street, with views out into the trees where we could watch monkeys swing was so great.
The access to the beach at that end of Mirissa is a bit tricky and not clearly marked.

Verified reviewWe loved the pool and the beautiful plants everywhere. It was really an oasis from the busy street outside. The hotel staff were all very sweet and happy to assist us.
Everything was great, but you can negotiate better prices for a tuktuk ride and nearby massage services.

Verified reviewBreakfast was a highlight. Delicious eggs, toast, fruit, juice and little Sri Lankan pastries. Pool was great. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Monkeys and fireflies were fun to watch. I sensed the beautiful aromas of cinnamon, cloves, lemongrass etc in the cleaning products, incense, garden, food etc. It really is The Spice House.
Brown towels, black pillow cases, dark sheets. I know it’s practical but doesn’t make me feel happy and glossy. It was drab.

Verified reviewBeautiful place. Fantastic staff and breakfast. Organised TukTuks for us. Helped us with a very late checkout to catch a late flight. Rooms are spacious and have a great style to them. Fridge in the room. Ceiling fan and air con. Hot water wasn’t too much of a problem. Didn’t have any noise issues personally.
The air con in our room (cinnamon I think) wasn’t that effective. It cooled half the room but just didn’t reach the bed. Not entirely sure why and not sure what you could do about it but maybe a standing fan in that room (which I’m sure they would have provided if I asked).

Verified reviewBreakfast was very good. Location is across the road from the beach and very close to Coconut tree hill point. Its a very homely atmosphere with lot of vegetation and a decent pool.
They do not provide lunch/ dinner. However, there are lot of good restaurants nearby.

Verified reviewOverall setting by the jungle with visiting monkeys and away from the street noise was so welcome!
The walk from the main property around to our suite was a bit annoying as the track was rough. Would be great to get the direct path through the bush developed!

We were sure that we would remember this hotel only for good reasons, but unfortunately we were robbed of a large sum of money there. The money disappeared from both rooms where we stayed, rooms were locked up. And whoever did it shamelessly took a lion share of our cash. Apparently it can happen in any hotel in Sri Lanka.
Hi Elena, Really sorry to hear that., obviously it is a most serious accusation which we take incredibly seriously. It is a shame that you didnt say anything at the hotel and I am only hearing about it now 5 days after you left which makes it very difficult to investigate. We do have CCTV and we also recommend that guests leave any valuables and money with us at reception so we can lock them away securely. It is a horrible feeling to even consider that one of our staff did this. Going forward all room keys will be signed out & in by the room cleaners.

Verified reviewGreat short stay in one of the villa rooms in Mirissa. Staff were very friendly and the room was very big, lovely and authentic. Great balcony overlooking the infinity pool. Breakfast was included which was very nice.
Check in could have been quicker and the villa is a tuk tuk away from the hotel with luggage (a few minutes walk without luggage which was fine)
