Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

New ZealandWe checked into the hotel at night and confirmed the restaurant hours. We had no food with us and were told the restaurant would stay open for another 3–4 hours. After going up to our room and having showers, we came down an hour later to eat, only to find the restaurant and bar already closed. The hotel had no food available at all, not even cabinet food or vending machines. We ended up going hungry overnight, as there was nowhere nearby to buy anything. Really disappointing.
Beautiful and very comfortable place with breathtaking views!

AustraliaThe buffet dinner was plentiful but not of the quality to match the very high price. The main dining area could have improved lighting to be less ‘canteen’ like and the public passages etc are rather bland and could use updating.
Our room was spacious warm and extremely well set up with an extraordinary view. I liked the bar area when the fire was lit though unfortunately on the second night the staff who were new to making fires did not succeed in lighting it , which took away from the atmosphere of the area.

MalaysiaThe car park at the rear of building was a bit limited.
Clear instructions on how to get to the room and where to park. The shops and F&B outlets were great since there's not much choice at that area. Great view from balcony.

AustraliaIt’s picky, but it all seemed a little too volume based and focussed on the mass market with coach loads of tourists being bussed in and out.

New ZealandCouldn’t change the room temperature, hot room overheated. No choice on food except a buffet dinner which is expensive, unhealthy to promote eating a lot and food was pre-made and reheated.

New ZealandThe time to check in is a little bit late (3pm check in and 10am to check ou), so we can't enjoyed more time in the hotel/room.
I loved the room view, comfy room, the food in the restaurant for diner and breakfast was amazing, the staff was great (specially the lady served us in the restaurant, she was amazing), I really appreciated the gift they prepared to me for my birthday on the bed.

United KingdomI’ve sadly marked this hotel down because I was a little disappointed for the money I paid. This place could easily be exceptional but it felt a little like a money grabbing scheme for tourists. I’ve stayed in much nicer places for an awful lot less. The room was outdated and a few renovations could make this place significantly more luxurious. I paid for a superior Mountain View room, but was sadly placed in the very back of the hotel on the ground floor with a restricted view of Mt Cook. I asked if I could pay for a room on a higher floor but they were fully booked. I don’t mind having to pay extra for the higher floor rooms, but it was very poorly advertised by the Hermitage on booking.com. There was no mention of the floor plan of the hotel and nowhere did it state that the rooms with the better views were classed as “premium rooms”. On booking.com it doesn’t seem to suggest there is a difference between premium and superior. Don’t make the same mistake I did! In addition, the Edmund Hilary alpine museum (which is located inside the hotel) is an extra $25 just to enter. I felt like this was cheeky for hotel guests who are paying to stay there, it should be included or at least discounted. I was also asked for a $300 credit card deposit just for the privilege of staying in my room. This felt very strange and unnecessary and I’ve never encountered this anywhere else before.
The Hermitage has the benefit of being in one of the most beautiful places in the world. If you’re considering staying in mount cook for a night, DO! It was incredible. The hotel is lovely, it had all the amenities you could need, it was very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

United StatesThe rooms could stand a refresh, but they are very clean and adequate.
The rooms at the Hermitage are dated and tired, but you're paying for the location and view and those things deliver in spades. We arrived after dark and were in awe at the view when we awoke the next morning - Mount Cook directly out our balcony and it was stunning! The restaurants are very expensive, but again, understandable given the isolated location. We had the breakfast buffet and the food was very good - the view magnificent. It was memorable. You are paying for your location and view here and those things make the Hermitage totally worth the price. We really enjoyed our stay!

AustraliaIt was pricey for what it was. Furniture was worn Shower pressure was weak and for almost $500 night I'd think they could splash out for 3ply toilet tissue and some moisturiser in the rooms.
The location was perfect, the view was stunning. Beds comfortable. The coffee machine in the room was a nice touch.
