How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Verified reviewAmazing location, view and character with a very large room and the biggest bed I have ever had in Europe!
Hot water and water pressure in the shower was a bit all over the place. Could only get good flow with scalding hot water…

Verified reviewthe room itself was great
the inability to access the property via uber/taxi was absolutely inexcusable. The QR code needed to enter Sintra was not communicated whatsoever during our arrival and exit - we had to walk extremely far uphill with a ton of heavy bags because the property did not take care of providing a QR code that worked either time for arrival and exit. This was extremely problematic. I requested a QR code and it did not work either time.

Verified reviewThe location of this apartment is excellent.
Apartment smelled like urine, appliances were broken or missing. Bathroom was nasty, hairs stuck to walls and balls of dust on the floor.

Verified reviewI loved the location. It was in the center of old Sintra, very near the National Museum, and many places to eat, several breakfast points, many shopping options. Walking distance from train station about 15-20 min and to all places for sight seeing!
The service was really bad. Upon arrival I couldn't understand how to access neither the building nor the room . They sent me written instructions last minute, once I started complaining via whats app messages. I tried reaching them on the phone through What's app they didnt pick up. The money charged for the room was much higher than other options offered in the area.. No breakfast No one available during check in. No daily cleaning. No change of towels and the showers drainage was not working properly. I just went with what was so as to enjoy my stay. I would not stay there again.

Verified reviewVery centrally located in the old center of Sintra, close to the National Palace, our room (studio on the 1st floor), was facing a quiet back street with charming views over some of the beautiful villas and castles in the hills and we were graced by a wonderful sunset on the sea, that you can actually see from the balcony. The room is large and well equiped, the bed is huge and comfy and as we were tired of our day hiking in the hills, we settled for a dinner in the room, enjoying the view and the quiet of the evening. A perfect stop over for us. A plus : despite the absence of staff onsite, the place proposes a storage room with lockers for your luggage.
The Casa da Pendoa is located in a narrow cobbled steep back alley, not easily accessible, so please be aware of this. They use an online system (with a "customer page" on their website) to deliver the codes to enter both the building and your room. They also use a lot the message system on booking.com. That seemed to make things more complicated rather than less to be honest. Especially, as often in Portugal it seems, they do not want to give you the codes too early, so you have to wait for the last minute to get them : which means you will need to have a charged phone and some signal... which can be sparse in Sintra ! And of course, the system bugs... so finally their team have to monitor it in real time and send you messages so you would finally get the key codes. Seemed like an overuse of online stuff to get this done while it could be much simpler.

Verified reviewAccommodated our group of nine very well - stayed in three separate apartments. My partner and I stayed in the "loft" and it was fantastic. The views from the balcony were gorgeous, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the room was spacious and clean. The apartment is extremely close to the old town shops, restaurants, and tuk-tuks that can take you up to Pena Palace. This would be my first choice for staying in Sintra again.
No fault of the apartment itself - however, for those travelling with a rental car - parking can be difficult and it can be a long walk to the apartment up some very steep hills (to be expected in Portugal). After 7:00pm, the posts on the roads leading to the apartment remain down and you can park your car in front of the apartment building (granted there is an available space).

Verified reviewThe room was beautiful and comfortable, and the location was terrific. We enjoyed nearly everything about our stay
The biggest and only complaint was the lack of hit water. I know it's not the worst thing but it was a struggle having to shower and wash up at night with freezing cold water. I called twice to complain and was told that the maintenance would check the following day, the next day came and the same story. Since we only stayed two nights it wasn't worth arguing

Verified reviewThe location is really central and the view was lovely. It was great to have a kitchenette facility. The room was clean and overall it was fine for a few days stay. The hosts were responsive when issues came up and the cleaning staff were friendly when we needed more towels.
Could have been clearer that the second code was for the room and not for the numbered key safe in the entrance lobby. The main thing was that the air conditioning unit broke on our first night - that was one of the key reasons we booked this place. We were told that someone would come and look it at and try and fix it but it didn't seem like anyone did, we were given a bucket for the leak and when we asked we were given a large fan so that was great. It would have been good to have some proper mugs and a couple more glasses/bowls. The towels were a little stained with make up but otherwise it seemed really clean.

Verified reviewVery good location, clean room and very well organized instructions how to get there and check in.
It’s not a downside but just a consideration when booking: as the property is located in historic city center, taxis and uber are not able to come to the door. From nearest taxi/bus stop it is 2 min walk though.

Verified reviewGreat spot central to everything. A short walk to the main centre for food, and shops. You can walk to castles or easily hop on the bus or in a taxi from the centre. When staying highly recommend using a taxi to enter the historic community as it is like a gated community and taxis can come and go with ease and know the streets. Not easy dragging your luggage along old cobbled streets trying to get to your accommodation otherwise.
Not knowing taxis have access to get in and out of the community with ease. no lift.
