Pretty old-fashioned interior, partly charming but hair dryer and mirror lights in the bathroom are outdated - could be changed, as well as the shower curtain of the bath tub.

Really clean, charming area for sitting outside and having a glass of wine (beautiful garden/terracce), nice pool, big rooms (superior double room). They also offered a quite good variety of food for breakfast. We really enjoyed staying there.

The views from the establishment were lovely. The bathroom was minute, and the steps leading up to it were scary to say the least.

The croissants were stale, from the day before. The breakfast was only just about OK.

The bathroom was small, but then again one should remember that it is a remodeled traditional house. I believe the hotel is a bit overpriced for what it offers

The hotel has a good location outside the city walls with free parking just in front of it.It expands along three adjacent, traditional houses. My room was pretty and cozy with a comfortable bed. The breakfast was fine. However, its four stars are an exaggeration.

We have limited mobility and because of the really quaint and gorgeous placement of the hotel, the very narrow, and steep stone steps to the rooms were difficult for us but for everyone else it would add a special uniqueness.

Monsarez is a truly beautiful location and the situation of the hotel is fabulous. The views are spectacular and they have a lovely terraced garden. It was amazing to look over the largest man-made lake in Europe and see Spain ahead of you.

    I can’t think of a single negitive.

This hotel, just outside the old city walls, was fantastic. The hotel is a collection of old houses and out buildings which has been beautifully restored. It’s rustic and cosy with very up to date bathrooms and lovely and warm which was much appreciated as we were staying here in a particularly cold spell in February. The view from our bedroom was fabulous and each morning sunshine flooded our room. The breakfast was really nice with a great selection of fruit. We were here a week and in all that time we only saw three of the staff. Three delightful young ladies who acted as recepsionists, maker of delicious breakfasts and laundry maids. Their local knowledge was very good too. In fact, they were able to answer numerous questions that the tourist office couldn’t and they gave us lots of tips such as when the baker arrived with freshly baked bread and when the fruit man visited. Important for us as we were here for a week with no car.

Steep dangerously slippy stairs and steps to bedrooms and pool area and with no handrails. Cracked tiles in bedroom floor with sharp edges and rusty bath. Bathroom heater dangerously close to shower curtain and loose plugs hanging by wires from wall. Disappointing easily rectified faults which would make this hotel a top class establishment.

Super breakfast and catered very well for my wife who needs a gluten free diet. Fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and the barragem on all sides of hotel and even from our bedroom window. Lovely old building full of character.

Swimming pool in a beautiful setting. Huge selection of fruit at breakfast and good selection of regional bread, cakes, cheese and cold meats. Home-made preserves were a favourite of my husband's. Imagine finding a good bathroom, fridge and wi-fi all in a genuinely antique setting, beautiful view from the window, and hardly a soul or a car went by in the street below which meant a peaceful night's sleep.

A Special Inn Built into the Hillside Overlooking Spain

    • Stayed 1 night

The Estalagem de Monsaraz is ideally located just outside the fortified walls of the town. The historic area is a five-minute walk. We reached our room by entering the inn, exiting past the living room onto a terraced courtyard built into the hillside, then re-entering a different wing. Orange trees lined the courtyard. The view from our window was spectacular--we could see 30-40 miles into Spain across a wide valley and the largest man-made lake in Europe. The room was stylish and comfortable, with partially exposed stone walls and private bathroom. Breakfast was well above average--local jams and specialties were labeled so we could fully appreciate what we were eating. Highly recommend the Estalagem de Monsaraz!

I honestly can't think of anything!

This is a great place to stay in the romantic hill-top village of Monsaraz. It is not inside the town wall, but just below them and was previously the town's inn. This means that it is much easier to get to than those inside, there is a restaurant just across the road, with all the others only being about 10mins walk up to town. Those with large amounts of luggage or trouble climbing steps will want to make sure they get an appropriate room, but we were in the building overlooking the garden, built higgledy-piggledy into the cliff, which has fantastic views whichever side you're on. The rooms are simple and 'rustic' to look at with exposed stone walls, but everything you need with firm and comfortable beds, and very classy bathrooms with quality provisions. Unfortunately the pool had been closed for the season, its setting with views across the vineyards, and olive groves and megaliths is spectacular. The lounge is cosy and the breakfast buffet as varied and interesting as the setting, with a range of standard tasty and local foods. We stayed two nights, but there's more than enough to explore in the area for a much longer stay, and you'll be well cared for by the helpful staff at this inn.

The room was not very large and would not have been very comfortable if we were to spend many hours in it - but the weather was beautiful and our stay was short, so this was not an issue. The TV in the room was small and very old - it had little choice of channels and poor signal. The hallways, stairs and doors to get to the room were narrow, uneven, cumbersome to move your luggage. The double bed was on the small side.

Nice pool area with a perfect view. Rustic, charming old house, suitable decoration. Perfect location, just outside the medieval walls. Helpful staff. Breakfast was good (buffet, continental style, variety was not too large, but fresh, good quality products). (Comparatively) Large, functional bathroom.

My parents were in a room in the main building and had two AC equipment in the balcony, which made noise all night long. The whole place has several steep stairs and steps, so for older people/people with mobility issues it would be a problem. Staff is helpful and friendly, but not very professional (very young, no-one stays in the property during the night, you don't see the guidance of any supervisor).

Excellent breakfast, nice location in the middle of the village with parking available nearby, the property is very spacious, so, despite it being full, you didn't feel it as overcrowded. Great view next to the pool, beautiful garden.

Difficult for my wife to walk about, but that's not a criticism, just that for less able bodied people it is not so easy to get around.

Excellent location, friendly staff, all we wanted to see within a short walk from our hotel. Good food in the four different restaurants we tried.

Isolation is not so good, we could basically hear everything going on in both the rooms next to ours... Given the price it is a bit disappointing

Perfect location just outside the old town of Monsaraz, and wonderful view on the countryside from the swimming pool.
