This accommodation is very special as it is located in the premises of a 12th century old monastery. It is run by a very friendly family which has bought the dilapidated building in the years '80 and has restored it, over the years, in its original state. They have done a marvellous job with full respect of the original details and architecture of the cistercenser religious culture. The 'pater familias' of the family who has written several books on cistercenser monasteries has given us an in-depth guided tour through the premises of the monastery where the family lives part-time. The guest rooms are nice and spacious and the breakfast is really great! There is a nice swimming pool and you can also walk down to the river to take a swim. Up the hill you have a spectacular view! All in all it is a very friendly, calm, green and very inspiring environment and offers great value for money!

Access is somewhat restricted. It would be nice to have free roam of the entire property.

Beautifully restored 17th century monastery, history is like nothing else! You can't buy it or built it.

Be prepared for some mountain driving to reach it - it is far away from civilization, which on the other hand has also a lot of benefits

The landscape in the middle of a dense woodland; very nice facilities, with a mystery setup in the surrounding monastery; the kindness and attentiveness of the staff

    Nothing to dislike!

Excellent 5 star experience in tranquil scenic corner of Portugal with interesting cultural history of spectacular monastery and personal professional guide through. Total privacy and intimate clean natural environment all surrounding. Very peaceful, relaxing, spiritual experience I would highly recommend!!

The pool water looked a bit dubious - but then there is always the river.......

Superb location with walks ,river and space, wonderfully peaceful and dark at night and the best buffet breakfast I can remember ( even fresh orange juice - regrettably uncommon ). Very informative tour of the monastery ( and a Portuguese history lesson ! ) with the owner. Regrettably we had only booked one night here whilst travelling home but we shall be back for longer soon.

The mattress was a bit hard

We had a charming welcome by the owners and learned the history of the monastery; it has been beautifully restored and has all modern conveniences one would expect in a high class hotel. The breakfast was excellent; try to arrive before dark, it is not easy to find.

There's no internet in the room, but that's not a problem.

Really nice place with a historic background. Loved the river spot nearby.
