Don’t have high expectations about spa and ask about two hours beforehand to switch it on before you go.

The AC did not work and was told it would only blow heat if it did work as the weather is too cold at the moment, our room was baking hot all night. The main reason for staying here was to relax in the spa, the steam room was not working and the Japonese bath should have a cold and a hot bath well both were barely luke warm? Really disappointed.

Breakfast was great and the food at the restaurant was also very good. The hotel is lovely and the staff were very polite.

The lack of wi-fi in the rooms should be addressed at some point...

Staying at this hotel is like a time-travel experience - a great one. It looks and feels like a glourious 1920s hotel should, with just the right amount of modern elements to keep it up-to-date. The rooms are comfortable and modernized, but the common areas retain all the original features.

If your expectations are that of a normal couple then we think that there is nothing not to like

Firstly the price was excellent, lots of parking surrounded by beautiful well kept gardens polite and knowledgeable staff and more than adequate sized rooms the usual bath/shower but piping hot water. Breakfast was included and was plentiful the hotel has kept it's old world charm it is very clean and some people would say that it is need of decorating but I think that would be detrimental to the ambiance. We went with friends for three nights and the four of us had a very comfortable stay

    Having to leave.

The building itself is worth the visit. Long, large corridors, spacious rooms, stunning dining room and lounge. The spa area is very nice, just as the old spaces that have been lovingly kept, like the old lift and old telephone booths and switchboard. The swimming pool is art-deco, and (mercy!) sufficiently far away from your room that the sound of children playing there will not disturb your nap. Nap that will be needed after having for lunch the local roast pig and Bairrada wine.

The food was a bit old fashioned, basic and not very inspiring. There was no a la carte when we stayed, only a buffet which meant limited choice for vegetarians.

We loved the old worldy-ness of the hotel - it must have been so glamorous and modern in its heyday, as the old photos on the walls demonstrate. Much of it is very well preserved and the bedrooms and bathrooms modernised. The reception staff were extremely helpful and accommodating.

The exterior pool is in need of a cleaning, too many flies around (some in the water itself) not making it a pleasant experience like it should be. This pool is also in need of some construction work to make it match the quality of the hotel.

a lot could be improved: MAINTENANCE is the word. In the spa two jaccuzies out of order; in the pool (excellent design and dimensions!) apart from the pool itself, which was not clean and had many leaves inside, the rest is left abandoned, the showers din't work, the glasses on the towers are broken, the tennis courts are also not maintained, the gardens are not kept, the grass/bushes are growing; the bedroom was impossibly small with virtually no space for the suitcase!! In summary, a hotel with huge potential but not living up to that potential - by any stretch of imagination! What could be a +dream experience' turns out to be a very flat stay in a hotel.

These points are to be taken as improvement suggestions to increase the value of such gorgeous hotel - swimming pool is great (quite big with very clean water) but the surroundings could have a painting; - the hotel could offer massages at owns room; - with such charming hotel some music from that period could be heard in the lobby, corridors, etc just having one silent spec; - many pianos could be seen throughout - one could be in the lobby and someone could be asked to play, say before dinner time (in the dinning room as well); - some more natural plants could be seen inside the main big spaces; - wifi in the room would be good, but not absolutely required (but you could state why - detox of the digital world) - finally - pls do keep the fine distinctive historic/architectural details (fixtures, furniture, etc) of this fantastic hotel and add some modern animation once in a while!

Its a gem of an hotel - beautiful architecture, plenty of art nouveau details (the phone central its a gem, the elevator, the furniture ... all magnificent), while the room was modern with all the necessary detail and very clean. Did not have the time to try the spa but it looked wonderful. Staff was very professional but also very friendly - last day we had to leave at 6:00, before the breakfast started - from 5:30 we had a special breakfast prepared in the lobby area

It would have been nice to know sooner that the Curia Palace is owned by the same people as own the Bussaco Palace Hotel and that as result we could have enjoyed afternoon tea at Bussaco. The Bussaco is rather discouraging of visits by non-residents, but as a resident of the Curia we would have been welcomed.

What is not to like about this wonderful 'dowager' hotel. From the moment you enter the drive you know this is going to be a true travel experience. The Curia Palace was built in the 1920s and holds on to all its 'old world charm'. Yes, she may be showing her age in a couple of areas, but nothing that will impair the joy of your visit. Staying at the Curia Palace you are not just staying at a hotel, this is a travel experience! From check in on our arrival, to local restaurant recommendations, to the staff and breakfast, to the sommelier's wine recommendations and waiter's attentions... faultless! Sumptuously large and well-fitted bathroom.

When the charm wears off, the place is exposed as simply a bit too dated. The old floorboards creak and when someone stomps down the hall, the old rooms with no soundproofing will certainly let you hear it. The bathrooms looks modern, but look closer. Mold on the grout. And one of those ridiculous "how to kill a tourist" bathtub/shower combos that we see all over Portugal. Hmm. Here's how that goes: First, take a fairly high tub that can be a bit slippery. Then, just make the shower door to close off the shower only half-way over the tub, guaranteeing the floor will sometimes get wet as you use one of those hand-held shower heads. Then, just for fun, build the bathroom with very slippery-when-wet marble-like tiles on the bathroom floor. Whatever idiot designed these "half way" shower doors and tubs so high that it becomes awkward to get out of it even if NOT slippery, deserves a few lawsuits. Almost killed myself on one when my foot slipped while balancing to get out of the tub with very few things to hold onto. Infirm? Disabled? Not so nimble? Just unlucky or forgetful of the high level of difficulty for something that should be pretty simple? Oh, well. No wi-fi in most all rooms. Folks, I don't care how big the place is. In the 21st C, this is just not acceptable. (And those network cables they hand out don't work with a lot of modern laptops, not to mention phones and tablets.) Breakfast begins at 8--rather late. It wasn't just me who didn't like that. Constant groups of folks were drifting into the dining area, trying to get in early. Even if you're not on business, 8:00 is late. It's not like this is a 10 room boutique with no staff. Surely, you could do a bit better.

Atmospheric old building. They do their best to make you feel like you stepped into another era, right down to the old music playing in the lunchroom. I enjoyed the vibe. The location is great, near most wineries if you are interested. Good value for the money. Many deals are to be had here. Comfortable bed.

The hotel marketing is misleading: internet on the rooms? sure, if you can plug an ethernet cable into your phone! Indoor pool? sure, but it's inside the spa facilities, which have health regulations preventing my 2 year old from getting in! (The Hotel informs about spa facilities restrictions, but announces indoor pool and spa separately..) Outdoor pool? sure, but it's not working. Cable tv? sure, but you get 1 or two channels per country (with very poor reception if you don't mind to tune the channels yourself) Paid more for the "patio view" room? sure, read the small letters: there's rooms with view to the FRONT patio. Then there's rooms with view to the called "spa patio" where you can spend all day long looking to the beautiful view of the spa facilities GREY ROOF! A 4 star hotel should know better! We're never going back!

The surroundings are beautiful, completely saved the vacations! There's also some sites near that can fill a day's planning.

-the intent of renovation should be praised although some "modern" outfits added may be out of context -there is still room for improvement in the indoors and outer leisure facilities and arrangements

-Management is doing a lot to keep the hotel as close as possible to its days-gone highest standard (ie:the best hotel accomodation available in Portugal around 1930) -A good portion of the art nouveau and art deco original furniture is still around -An 1930 olympic-size outer swimming pool is available in summertime and recreates the ambience of the then luxury transatlantic steamers -Modern SPA facilities are available -The hotel runs a small-scale zoo, with mountain deers and peackocs -Good quality Free WI-FI -Staff is friendly and proficient -Cleaness in-door climatisation, insulation and safety follow excellent standards -Accesibility is very easy (a few Km only, off the A1 highway)

Some areas of the hotel could have better maintenance, like the SPA which doesn't have all the equipment working; also the areas outside and around the hotel could be better cleanned.

This is a true palace, where history can be felt. The rooms were modernized and are very comfortable and nice. We do recommend this place.

The breakfast was very poor. There wasn't enough staff there to clean and prepare all the tables for the guests.

You feel like that you are in a hotel from the 30's. The room itself is very comfortable and well decorated.

I dislike the parking lot. It has lots of dust. Should be in "pedra da calçada". The swimming pool surroundings could also receive a boost with fresher looks and furniture.

Amazing building and location. Nice swimming pool.
