We were not given a room with double bed even though it was requested at the time of the reservation. Such a pity, because we went to spend the night in a special place to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we ended up sleeping apart. I wish they would have let us know at the time of the booking, or at least have pushed the two beds together but we were told that at the time we checked in it wasnt possible.

Beautiful building, decorated with 17th century Portuguese furniture and tapestry. Rooms have modern bathrooms. Staff very friendly. Breakfast was good.

The hotel is very impressive. Felt like staying in a castle. Staff were super helpful with information and recommendations. Our room was spacious with a nice view of the town. We enjoyed the pool. The onsite restaurant had very tasty food (if a little large!) There is a pool table in the games room and card tables in the bar. You can also climb the tower that is part of the hotel.

    It's a Castle!

Disappointingly our spacious room had no view to speak of. The castle is at the top of a hill, so the walk back from the town is obviously uphill and through some deserted streets. We also found the castle very difficult to find in the car, which is weird because you can see it from miles away! The sat nav tried to direct us up an unsuitable narrow track. We eventually found it by following a local chap who went out of his way to get us there, bless him.

This is an impressive and genuine Medieval castle set atop a hill above the town of Estremoz. It feels palatial with appropriate décor and furnishings. The bedroom was large and comfortable. There is a very good restaurant in the former town jail almost next door. Guests can climb the stone steps to the top of the castle tower for an excellent view of the town and the surrounding countryside. We stayed there on a Friday night and so were able to visit the huge and interesting market that takes place in the town on Saturday mornings. The breakfast was in the grand dining room and the food was plentiful and varied.

Be aware that the standard rooms on the top floors have lowish ceilings compared with other pousadas and the smallest bathroom I have ever seen in a pousada - and the bath with shower over could only be accessed via an awkward step. The view of the town is good but only accessed by climbing up a couple of steps to look out of the window. As with other pousadas the restaurant was very over priced but there are many restaurants down in the town. The castle is surrounded by rather poor housing and there was an almost constant noise of barking dogs, but the double glazed and shuttered windows kept the sound at bay.

A most impressive pousada with vast public rooms and a rewarding place to stay. The garden and pool area are excellent with impressive views of the town. The breakfast is of a comparable standard with other pousadas, though with far fewer labels on the available jams etc.

We tried several times to visit the Chapel over the course of two days, but it was never open. We were disappointed to have missed this opportunity.

Staying in this lovely castle was a highlight of our vacation. The grandeur of the building, the beautiful antiques, the hallways that lit up as you approached, all added to the elegance of the setting. Dining in the great hall was an event in itself. The service and the food were duly matched by the exquisite ambiance of the room. It made for a memorable anniversary dinner celebration!

Breakfast was ok. The woman replenishing the table was not friendly and the buffet was out of eggs the 20 minutes we spent in the dining room. The coffee was old style in a pot on a warming element - not good. We felt the Pousada could have provided better coffee and overall breakfast service. The other aspects of the hotel including restaurant suggestions were great!

We loved staying in a former castle and reflecting on its history. The furnishings were lovely and we climbed the tower late in the day and took in the views. The staff were very nice and filled us in on the palace's history. The bed was not overly comfortable but the pillows were perfect.
