Basic rooms which you would not expect from a SLH member. In the hotel, there is virtually no staff, so don't expect anybody to offer you a coffee, wine or cocktail while sitting in the many beautiful places in the pousada or outdoors.

The location in the old pousada is fantastic!! The territory of the hotel is nice to get lost exploring, drinking wine or having a walk

    "Small luxury" big time

Those frogs in the pond right in front of the Suite were a bit annoying during the night... but that's nature and they are quite "pretty" if you get to see them during the day. ;-)

"Small luxury" in a big and spaciously designed old but and historical building. The modern interpretation of a luxurious monastery life is perfectly implemented. Every angle provides a WOW effect. This hotel is simply beautiul and impressive without being overwhelming. It is the perfect place for relaxation and the perfect place for romantic holidays.

Baby cot did not have a mattress - it was way to hard for a baby and we only realized it in the morning. Window leaked water during a thunderstorm. Electricity went out and elevators were kind of working but customers told somewhat rudely not to use them by reception. Bed and pillow quality was ok at best. Some staff was very nice and attentive, but some not really. Decoration of the room and hotel could be a lot better. Restaurant is not step free access (includes breakfast). For the price we paid (160€) was really not worth it!

Spacious bathroom, great view from the room, monastery feeling, reasonable breakfast, speedy check out.

    Nothing to dislike.

Excellent hotel. The building, ex monastery, is amazing. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was better than expected. The location is a little isolated and you need a car but well worth the effort and drive to relax every evening in such a tranquil, peaceful and relaxed atmosphere and be looked after by the stafff. Highly recommended.

The bill but that was to be expected.

Everything that you would expect from a Pousada. An impressive building by any standard. It has been cleverly remodelled as a hotel without destroying original features. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The views are spectacular. The ground and public spaces are impressive, but also welcoming. The restaurant is housed in the old monastery kitchen. A magnificent dining experience added to by very good food. The kid with rice was exceptional. However leave space for the buffet desert table, diet can start tomorrow. A huge choice all of it delectable. The bill as expected is at least twice the Portuguese average.

The hotel restaurant prices are absurd, totally not worth it. The food was just ok for dinner, and the breakfast was also disappointing. (Gerês has great restaurants with reasonable prices). The staff was just average.

Such a hidden gem! We were overwhelmed by how amazing this hotel was, the pictures while super nice do not do the historical space justice. My friend and I spent the first night and whole next day marvelling at how beautiful it is and how nicely converted into a hotel the whole space is. One of my favourite ever hotels!

This would not be a hotel for a disabled person. There is a lift but getting to the dining room involves numerous steps and changes of level. Door and furniture handles - and particularly taps - are small, fiddly and awkward. Air conditioning in the rooms can’t be adjusted for temperature and it won’t work anyway if you open the window - a window which can’t be held open!

This hotel’s appeal rests hugely on this historic building and its location. It is a lovely place: rooms / cells, dining room, corridors, cloisters retain an atmosphere of the past with stylish contemporary comfort. Staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful, but the hotel feels understaffed and there were some avoidable muddles as ‘management’ doesn’t seem to communicate with its staff. The food was good ‘traditional’, desserts were excellent, breakfast was good but there could have been greater variety in all of these from day to day. It was good to have complimentary port in your room on arrival and fresh fruit and water daily. Beds were comfortable and the bathroom good. A final appeal is that the little town is attractive and it’s also possible to eat well there.

There is nothing to see in the small town of Amares but drive a few kms up the road and you visit a beautiful church. One night at this pousada was enough to see everything.

The monastery has been modified into a lovely pousada with very large bedrooms which are very comfortable. A nice little touch was a small bottle of port and fruit in our room when we arrived. Something that none of the other pousadas we stayed in did. The grounds are lovely with a swimming pool (which we didn't use). The breakfast choice was very good but not for vegans but vegetarian option was available. Again in the evening, the choice of meals for vegetarians/vegans was limited.

Limited dining options in the town had to drive a short distance when the only restaurant was closed for the evening. The monastery has a very good restaurant- but pricy for the area.

Only one quibble there was a charge for the water left in the room which for an hotel of its standard left a sour note.

The décor was very stylish - the whole place was very grand - excellent breakfast, they produced gluten free bread for me very quickly and had it waiting on the second day. There are lots of steps from the official car park to reception so insist on being allowed to come to the front court yard to unload

The weather on our first day....I was assured that they did their best to arrange sunshine, to no avail.

the ambiance was an absolute delight, the breakfasts were fresh and wholesome. I made the mistake of opening the bubbly bottle..it went all wrong and sprayed floor, table and some of the beautifully displayed food. The staff was most gracious in repairing my foolishness...they deserve all the praise I can give ! Had two dinners in the dining room, the food was excellent so was the service and the presentation.

The food in the restaurant isn't fully up to the standard of the hotel. The main courses are very rich. Also, I ordered pork and got pork, tripe and blood sausage - those ingredients should have been stated in the menu as they aren't to everybody's liking.

This is a great place but in the way it is run it is more a four-star than a luxury hotel. It is a pity that the hotel provides very scarce information about the region, its history, sites and hikes. Also, if they showed a closer connection with the church then this might help the village gather the funds needed for its renovation.

A beautiful, much recommended place - amazingly renovated! Meet Sylvie in the church to get it's history explained!

Food was amazing, location absolutely gorgeous and the staff went above and beyond with every request. We were here for my partners birthday so there were many requests... ;) The most outstanding aspect though is the building itself. The staff responded poorly to a situation that we experienced while in the Restaurant. I was locked in the restroom of the Restaurant for 30 minutes without a way to get help. The walls were thick and no one heard me scream. The handle had fallen off the door and I didn't notice upon entering the stall. Needless to say, after 30 minutes locked in there, I was upset and helpless. My mother eventually came to look for me and got help. They could have done something to compensate for this BAD EXPERIENCE. They offered to get a doctor if I needed, I didn't need one though. They could have offered something from the hotel. A financial compensation of some sort in my opinion, but they never offered. We checked out right after breakfast (which were already planning as we only had a 1 night stay here). Was unfortunate.

Loved the room with a huge Comfortable bed and Modern aesthetic, the views, the feel of the history of the place as an old monastery was nice. The price was reasonable.

    - We booked over 1 month in advance asking for a double room we got a twin room. - We asked for a quiet room and we got one where it was very hard to sleep due to external noises like cars, people, luggage, etc. - The breakfast doesn't have a lot of variety (not corresponding to the images) although the available products are fresh and tasty - Too expensive

    - Old building with great potential - External environment and surrouding

dinner good but a bit overpriced as was wine. no stairway access to floors! you have to use a small elevator located at opposite end of floor. Staff was eager but a bit inexperienced. Parking is problematic located far and away...which may be just as well if you have small bags.

12th century cistersian monastery. wonderful facility. Generally quiet. good rooms. great views. nice walking behind monastery. swimming pool. good internet.

We asked to move rooms to a twin and appreciated the effort to accommodate this request. The room itself was lovely. However it was very noisey at night due to traffic and music from the square outside.

The ambience of the Pousada and the exceptional staff. The pool and gardens. The restaurant was lovely.
