Sound and warmth insolation is terrible in the room below because there is a wooden door leading outside which is not at all insolated (big hole, let sound and cold enter easily, you feel you are outside when hearing people or birds). Also, the sound insolation of the floor is terrible, you can hear everything spoken in the upper living room from the bedroom (and people's step at 23:00 is not very pleasant).

Very charming property and area, which can be improved regarding some issues. The breakfast is also really good and qualitative.

Note for the management: The Quinta have a new chef. Some of the dinner recipes were not very well executed. Chef should be encouraged to try out in the kitchen - and not on the guests - before serving up some of the courses. Ingredients were all fresh, no problem there.

Communal eating arrangement at breakfast and dinner a very good idea. That way we met many fellow guests. And tried a variety of wines! We felt at home. Staff very helpful and attentive.

Some travellers may find the steep entrance to the property a bit difficult to negotiate. The footpath from the carpark to the main door is a bit uneven -- not ordinarily a problem.

The Quinta das Vinhas is modest in the very best sense -- simple, discreet, restrained. It provides comfortable accommodation at a reasonable price in a wonderful setting. The gardens, the sitting rooms, the pool, the flowers, the diverse clientele all add to the charm. There are numerous restaurants in the area and good Table d'hôte meals are also available at the Quinta.

A softer bed, (but its a matter of preference), longer lasting hot water

Cottage is located in the vineyards, great views, rural setting, nice clean pool, functional fireplace, (7 eur per basket of fire wood), presents, like white wine, bonus stuff, like fresh bread, cheese, ham, coffee and tea, fruits, eggs- all you need for country side breakfast

Dinner was not available every night - for three nights a week they now do only a selection of bar snacks. Just a surprise when we had specifically booked 'dinner' for the Sunday after travelling all day.

Beautiful old building full of character, comfortable big bed, lovely view from the terrace all set in the middle of a vineyard. Lovely staff who spoke good English.

lighting in the bedroom was a little dim

A very relaxed place to be. Having the balcony as well as the garden area to sit outside was lovely. Having bread delivered each morning made breakfast an occasion. Having wine, butter, jam, milk, coffee and tea available in the fridge was a nice touch. Having a tour of the house and learning a little about it added something extra, as did the informative wine tasting session.

Not well maintained breakfast. Be up early or you will only empty plates and the dining table full of dishes. Absolutely not ok for a four star establishment. Inferior light in the room, no extra sockets to charge mobile phone. Manager very focused on rules and not serviceminded.

Unfortunately nature is a strong force to hold back in Madeira and ants were visitors to our self catering cottage, they managed to get into the fridge amongst our food . . The chimney was blocked so we couldn't light a fire in the evenings. The bed was very hard.

Location, historic setting, charming, well organised. Good quality setting.

Only downside was a dirty pool by the mansion. It was not very nice to swim along with leaves and died insects (even a huge spider).

If you want to experience authentic Madeira you should stay in this hotel. Its unique atmosphere, history and tradition in everything, comfortable rooms, delicious food (fresh juice, freshly baked bread, homemade yogurt, etc), friendly staff (espatada for dinner was a special experience thanks to their chef), very quite and peaceful atmosphere and the views to die for. Highly recommended!

We just had two twin bed put together to one double bed. There was a gap in between. But this was just a very tiny issue.

We had a wonderfull cabin with fireplace and fully equiped (we got a starter kit with water, butter, jam, milk) kitchen. Buns were delivered every morning so we could take the breakfast on our terrasse with view to the ocean. A small supermarket is just outside of the resort. Drive to levadas is 20-45min (Santana, Pico Ruvio/Grande) and 5min to paul do mar or jardim do mar for surfing. Superfriendly staff and beautiful vineyard. Can defenetly recommend it.

The bed was not very comfortable in my opinion and it was a bit cold in the room. The walls are quite thin in the hotel building, so you can hear any little noise or talk that the other guests do. So, a bit difficult to have some privacy. The wifi should be arranged in all the hotel rooms- now it is available only in the sitting area.

Very nice location - with wonderful views over the ocean and afternoon sun. Beautiful and tastefully decorated historic hotel building with nice, big gardens around. Wonderful big breakfast with local fresh bread, organic jam and fresh fruit. The possibility to have a 3 course dinner in the hotel as well. Very helpful and friendly staff.

Staff left for the night without checking us in. Emergency phone number did not work so we (both nearing 70 years old) spent a very uncomfortable night on a small sofa until found by the breakfast staff. They said they would not charge us for the night we did not have a room!! and offered 2 nights meals plus wine. Dinners were barely acceptable - overcooked fish with sweet potato, pineapple chunks and raw grated carrot! Eight people booked for dinner but the cook only had food for the 6 she was expecting. On check out we had been under charged and we (being honest or foolish?) pointed it out and paid in full. Two days later we got an email to say that we owed them 50 euros!! No one ever checked our passports. Management is totally shambolic.
