The old town is small and quaint and is located along the river Saone. Old Town is easily walkable with the main area being about 10 x 12 city blocks in width with an additional newer and larger portion of town immediately to the south. It has nice historical charm and is centrally located between Paris, Geneva and Lyon. Cathedral is great. The roman ruins are pretty good. The town is wonderful to walk around in. In the evening everyone was gone and the streets were quiet and wonderful. Montceau Les Mines is a lovely tranquil town. There are peacful walks along the canal with old photographs mounted in intervals at the canalside of how it looked and was used many years ago, which is very interesting. The town offers very little but it is on the TGV and SNCF mainline. The local roads are fast and very easy to access. A very good hotel to use for a touring base. There is a huge amount to visit within an hour's drive. Le Creusot is famous as a one-time industrial centre so it provides a growing number of museums and is clearly in a period of transition. Chalon is a delightful town, less well known than many other towns in Burgundy, but very lively. There is a great market, many fine restaurants and everything is easily reachable on foot. Wonderful town with a magnificent abbey and cloisters. Pretty abbey square with cafes and bistro. Great shopping centre. Beautiful riverside.
