A rooms renovation is strongly needed. Breakfast very limited and the filter cofee is awfull . Rooms are smelling of tobacco since they allow visitors to smoke inside the rooms. The cleaning lady forgot to to pick up the previous tourists socks :(

    Location and staff friendly attitude

Unacceptably unclean. Absolutely everything in the room was dusty bc of no screen in the window, bathroom shower drain was clogged with hair, floor rug and furniture was stained and dirty. Light out in bathroom - when asked to replace it, reception asked me if I really needed the light.. I stayed bc I spent most days travelling outside of the city. It was almost like camping, but without the fresh air. No hot water apart from one day.

Great location, historic house, quiet nights and easy access to public transport.

The Kariye Oteli is a small hotel with a lot of charm. The decoration of common rooms (several living rooms) and bedrooms is very tasteful. Breakfast (excellent) is served in a beautiful restaurant where it is also possible to have lunch and dinner with a special Ottoman kitchen. The hotel is very nicely situated, neighbor to the Chora church and in a very calm and popular quarter with old houses and small alleys. It is a little bit far from the touristic centre but communications are good (bus, tram) and it is easy to travel to for example the bazar, the Galata bridge, and the Sultanahmet quarter. For us, this hotel appears as en excellent choice for anyone who wants to experience a more authentic part of Istanbul in very pleasant conditions.

Although charming, the rooms and furniture are shabby and not everything works as well as it should. The staff don't speak good English.

It's a unique hotel with charm. Located next to an old church which is a museum in a residential neighborhood. The exterior is beautiful. There's a gourmet-class restaurant attached to the hotel, worth a visit for dinner.

Spotty Wifi, spotty hot water in tiny shower, cigarette aroma drifting into my room, many of staff understood only Turkish.

Genuine Ottoman locale, real Istanbul, very safe, Islamic neighborhood (I am not a Muslim).

I loved the art and history all around the old neighborhood without the major crowds. Simple, unpretentious rooms in a house with a peaceful feel and a great breakfast. The hotel is next door to the Kariye museum which is a jewel of Byzantine art. The old walls are just one minute's walk up the street, and Edirnekapi ( "Kapi" means gate) tram stop is just 3 stops after you transfer from Topkapi. Edirnekapi is the place (identified with a marker) where Mehmet II, the Conqueror finally broke through the walls during his siege of Constantinople in 1453. I have never seen such extensive and ancient walls as in Istanbul. There are also a number of good shops and a gallery of Taner Alakus' work around the corner with attached studio where young artisans are helping to create exquisite Ottoman art. Very beautiful. The neighborhood is fascinating if you are a little adventuresome in entering a warren of occasionally marked streets in a conservative neighborhood. The most enchanting aspect is the delicious Ottoman cuisine in the Asitane restaurant downstairs. I was especially lucky to be there on a Friday and a Saturday night when a musician came and sang and played traditional Ottoman music that caressed your ears! Taxis know the place well, too. I hope to be back!

Once breakfast delivered, staff didn't come back to ask if you wanted a second coffee e.g

Staff very helpful if you asked for something, e.g. local info. I love olives and cheese for breakfast - part of standard Turkish breakfast
