How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Verified reviewThe bungalows are very cozy, super clean and the staff is extremely friendly 👌👍 The owner took us on a day trip with snorkeling and diving and had a lot of tips for us. He joined us for lunch and dinner and had an answer to all of our questions regarding whale sharks, diving, beaches etc. 100% recommendation !

Verified reviewLovely staff, chef was very good (we had breakfast, lunch, and dinner), bicycles provided. Our host (Hassan) also organised our whale shark swim with his colleague Abou and even our pick up and drop off. Overall would highly recommend. It is on the Utende side of the island, meaning it’s closer to the Marine Park, restaurants, and dive spots (about a 10 minute bike ride or a 5 minute TukTuk ride).
We went in the summer (Jan) and were fine with no aircon at 31C, but if it were any warmer than that would want a place with aircon if you’re from a cold weather country, such as ourselves.
Thank you very much for stay at Mafia Island bungalows. You're always welcomeback 🤗

Verified reviewLovely and private location with nice gardens (be aware its in the marine park and those fees are separate), bikes to get around. Excellent host - so attentive and cared for us
I usually like an extra shelf/hook in the bathroom to spread out a little and hang some clothes
Thank you very much for stay with us. You're very welcomeback 🤗.

Verified reviewexcellent accommodation in utende village. the staff is super friendly, attentive and helpful. the rooms are beautifully done, breakfast is fresh, delicious and more than enough. the dinner for 12$ is reasonably priced, you get a starter, a main and drinks and it‘s delicious. keep in mind that you‘re staying in the village and not on the beach. they lend you bicycles for the 5 minute ride and the drive is really nice. if i ever return to mafia i‘d stay there again. asante tena:)
Thank you very much Caro for stayed at Mafia Island bungalows. You're always welcomeback 🤗

Verified reviewExcellent friendly staff with Hassan the manager being excellent. Great food at affordable prices, especially dinner. The seafood and soups are excellent with generous portions. They lend you bikes to get to and from the beach and dive shops. No air-conditioning in the room but with the fan it was fine as the stone used kept it cool. The showers have working hot water and the room was bigger then expected. They also do laundry where you just tip what's fair depending how much you wash.
Its a 10-15 minute bike ride to the beach where all the tours and activities start. About a third of the ride is on sandy trails so you need to be a confident bike rider. It's also easy to get lost if you are bad at directions like us and the place is not on google maps yet. Even just placing 1-2 signs or painted posts to follow could make a huge difference. Also just know at utende you need to pay the marine park fee daily if you want to go to the beach.
Thank you very much for stayed at Mafia Island bungalows. You're always welcomeback🤗

Verified reviewWe just finished our 3 day stay in Mafia and at Mafia Island Bungalows : it was a lovely stay, all-round : beautiful space for the house, comfortable terrace, perfect bedroom (Upendo - very nicely decorated with local flair, loved it), great bathroom… everything fine! The place is overall very quiet as it sits a little away from the road at the entrance of the Marine Park. We did not meet the owners, who where on a trip off the island : however, they took the time to check-in with us every single day, and it was much appreciated. We also would like to adress a great shout out to the staff : Hassan was very available, without being « too present » / just the right balance; and there is an amazing Chef on premises: we loved the breakfasts and even more the diners! The homemade bread and Chapatis, the soups, the mains and the deserts… everything was delicious ! Well done, we whole-heartedly recommend staying with you when visiting Mafia and hope to come again one day ☺️

Verified reviewThe staff was amazing, very hospitable and took care of everything. Breakfast and dinner was great, they have a really great chef and attentive personnel. They also rented us bikes for free, such that we could drive to the dive shop (~10 minutes by bike). Great and inexpensive stay!

Verified reviewThe design of the bungalows is really really nice and special. It’s very clean and like a little oasis in the palm tree jungle of Utende. But what is even more special is how everyone is taking care of you. The breakfast and the breakfast service with Kanari is exceptional and in the end he even gave me a tour through the village in Utende with local food. The food in general is really reall good (much better than at the beach haha). Breakfast with fresh papaya and lime was also soo good! Whatever you need, everyone tries to make you feel at home. My charging cable broke and I didn’t even have to wait 10 minutes until they organized a new one for me. Great place and you are never alone there. You can rent bikes for free to go to the beach as well and drive through sand pathways, coconut trees and cows :) absolutely recommend to stay there!
No WiFi and AC for now but they just openend and will have one eventually. Shortly before rain season Mafia Island is just really hot and humid.
Thank you so much. You're always welcome back.

Verified reviewlovely staff, great food, peaceful location and lovely rooms! the beach is from 10 mins bike ride away and they offer you bikes for free. the staff was super nice and helpful to organise excursions etc. great value for money!
the only minus is that the place is so new that not many boda drivers know about it so it can be a little tricky to find (even for me everything coming back got a little lost because i'm not very good at navigating). maybe a sign to the road would help.
Thank you so much for stay with us and you're welcomeback.
