Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

South AfricaRoom was very small. Just barely fit the double bed. Name banner outside the guest house is shoki shoki hostel and it did feel like a hostel and not a guest house.
Good location to explore stone town and to close to sea side for night market and exploring. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Breakfast was at another venue but absolutely delicious.

United KingdomAlthough a mosquito net was provided for the double bed, no mosquito nets were provided for the childrens’ bunk beds - not ideal!

CanadaThere is no common area to hang out in so it is just your room and the shared toilet/showers. It can be a bit noisy at weird hours of the night/morning. If you have mobility issues, the stairs are very steep - the staff will help with your bags, but you still need to be comfortable going up/down them.
It was very nicely located in the heart of the old town by Jaws Corner. The staff were friendly and I was able to check out before office hours. The room and facilities were clean and comfortable. It’s great if you’re looking for a simple place to sleep in the centre of the old town.

United KingdomThe bathroom smelt of damp but that has been the case in most mid budget hotels and guest houses in Tanzania and Zanzibar. We were on the top floor and the stairs were very steep.
The room was spacious and functional. The location was right in heart of Stone Town. Good security at entrance. We were able to leave our bags after check out.

KenyaPayment of the activities was not clear. We ended up paying more with a different staff than what was earlier agreed with another staff. Also, one ends up paying more in Tanzanian Shillings of which we were never given the exchange rate used.
It’s in the vicinity of Stone Town so one can walk around.

South AfricaThere is no space to sit and just relax. There are some chairs on the first level but it is too hot.
They have water available for guest. The water tank has 2 options, 1 was icy cold, which was great in the Zanzibar heat, and the other was boiling hot, which I loved because I could use it for tea. The staff help with your bags, which is amazing and needed considering how steep the stairs are. Very clean space :)

United KingdomStairs were very steep which made it a bit uncomfortable carrying all our luggage to the room (but you can ask for help). The room was quite small and dark, and overall the place wasn't the cleanest.
Good location, staff is very friendly and let us store our luggage during the day and use the communal space for a couple of hours before we left for the airport. We really appreciated the fact that we had an air-conditioning in the room - it makes all the difference! It was also nice that they offer great breakfast for a reasonable price in the main Shoki Shoki hotel building. Overall it was exactly what we needed for 1 night in Stone Town.

GermanyThere could be a little more space dedicated to socializing. Another thing not particularly related to the hostel is that everyone will try to sell you their tours, which frankly are very much overpriced allover Zanzibar. (e.g., 30$ for a 20-minute boat ride, plus everyone will ask for tips even if they did not provide any service to you.)
I got there early in the morning after my flight into Zanzibar, and the night shift guy let me check in immediately so I could take a shower and rest for a bit. They have a water dispenser - a real life saver. The dorm beds are quite comfortable and everything is super clean including bathrooms and showers. They also offer help getting your luggage up and down the very steep stairs (don't try it yourself). There is also a kitchen upstairs which is nice but doesn't offer much in terms of amenities. For a few days it is sufficient though. The place is located in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the old town.
