The room has some type of unpleasant incense smell, like the clothes detergent. There is no paper towel in the bathroom.

The location is perfect. Room is nice. There are enough bathrooms that we didn't have to wait. Simple breakfast is very nice. They also provide eggs for us to cook.

The place has a nice flow. The staff, most of them are nice, talkative and make you feel good. The vibes are artistic, musical, chill....in a positive atmosphere. I would repeat my experience if I need to go back to San Francisco

The Top bunk bed is kind of uncomfortable. If you get that one, you can ask to switch to the bottom one. But they may change you to a different room.

I enjoyed my stay, i would recommend it if you want to be in a centric area. I took the bus literally everywhere. Also, I meet a lot of cool people from Germany, South Korea, Mexico, England, and Spain;There is a good vibe. The common area is very nice to hangout or work. I also liked the breakfast system. Don't be shy, literally almost everyone there is kind. They have fun activities going on during the week that you can participate and meet people on the bars near the hostel.

Miss having ensuite bathroom, but they have enough shared bathrooms, so you don’t have to wait to use it and it was kept clean.

would’ve loved for there to be more vegan options for breakfast

i was recommended green tortoise by a classmate & i’m really glad i went with his recommendation because this was a great experience! as a young female travelling solo for the first time i felt really safe & well looked after by the staff. the location was super central and also felt really safe. the complementary breakfasts were a bonus, i loved the bagels and the orange juice, and the dispensers for shampoo and conditioner were very handy. loved it, very cool place with lots of character

You have to preparw breakfast yourself, even though it's included (they provide you with everythingbut you need to cook it and clean afterwards). Not a big deal though since it helped with getting to know other people while making their breakfast too

The staff is friendly, there's a large common area, incredible interior design, and an amazing community and handle on patron activity that perfectly balances both a safe and fun environment. The Green Tortoise is a special place and I truly feel bad for anyone who has never experienced it. If you are trying to experience San Fransisco to its fullest and get the most authentic experience, stay at the Green Tortoise.

It is on a bit of a dodgy street there is a few strip clubs right by the hostel but seemed fine in the day.

Really fun party hostel with events on every night of the week to join. Great free dinner on Sundays too and there common area was like a lounge area which was massive and a huge kitchen. Was really well set up and also free breakfast with bagels, eggs cook your own and fruit and coffee was pretty good compared to prices of other hostel. I would definitely stay here again if I come back to san Fran.

United States as a whole. This country looks near the collapse, it's horrible what is going on there. Don't go if you are from a developed country. Nothing to do or see there. Extremely overvalued.

Had everything you needed for a hostel and more. Never had to wait for a toilet or shower. Had a really good social aspect with cheap events on every night. It's one of my top 3 hotels I've ever stayed in, if not the best! Free breakfast and a free dinner 1 of the nights.

As mentioned by previous reviewers, the walls and windows are not particularly soundproof. Depending on where your room faces, it does get noisy on weekends from the music from the streets. But that is what you get when you're living in the city. You can either request and pay more for rooms that do not face the main streets or get ear plugs.

The location of the hostel is brilliant. About a block away from Chinatown and 10 minutes from the pier and ferry plaza. There are so many food places within walking distance. I was travelling by myself and I never felt unsafe at the hostel. The rooms are decently sized. You do get a personal light in your bunk and access to at least two switches. There is a space at the bottom of each bunk bed for you to store and lock your personal bags. I especially appreciate the bathroom stalls at Green Tortoise. Although it is a common bathroom (this is a hostel after all), it is single stalled. Love the privacy. There was always a bathroom available when I needed one. The hostel has a big and open dining hall. Breakfast is served here. There is coffee and tea, breads, spreads, cereals, and fruits. There are also eggs and you are free to cook them in whatever style you enjoy. I often buy meals and snacks from around the area and bring them back to eat at the dining hall. Loads of tables and comfortable chairs available.

I didn't care for sleeping in a bunk bed. When something says "breakfast" I kind of expect a little more than just day old bagels and cream cheese.

I liked that it was in a good spot in the city. It made it easy for me to get around. The lounge area was nice. The staff were all really cool and welcoming.
