How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

Perhaps to have DSTV extended to the rooms especially for sport

Always wonder what I need to do with a 7.5 review - could be helpful if you could be specific about what did not meet your standard of a 10 so we can fix if it is a general issue. WE had DSTV for some time and since the majority of our guests don't even turn the TV's on and with the drivel that DSTV provides which we pay a huge fee for, we chose to go the route of a central space for DSTV - big screen especially for sport. Every service we pay for ends up in the rates.

Verified reviewI liked the few the guest house has overlooking the sea! The swimming pool was an absolute pleasure. The room was very comfortable.
Absolutely no complaints at all, maybe just a little better communication regarding meals, etc, but not a huge problem at all.

Verified reviewThe view is amazing over looking the harbour. Sunsets over the ocean while in the pool is blissfull. Playfull dog and beautiful cat. very personable staff, namely Agnus as head of house, and Dave the owner is very friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Only the couch in the room we had booked needs some repairs and maintenance.

It is very low - that is its design. I am always curios to know specifics when we get 7.5 and lower for reviews, don't know how to attend to what is missing to make it a 10. It is always more helpful if you could simply talk to us and we get a upfront opportunity to either explain or fix.

The facilities are old but to be fair, it was clean. Don't like the stairs up to the rooms. Overall, the house feels cramped.
So sorry you did not enjoy your stay. To be fair, our rooms and property is very spacious and I am not sure how you feel that the house felt cramped - 850sqm. Not clear what you mean about the facilities being old - they are not super modern on purpose, they reflect our homely and loving personality. The stairs are perfectly functional so not sure what you don't like about them - they do require some energy to climb. Thanks for your feedback, i find no reason to change anything based on it. The location offers beautiful ocean views and is just a 5-minute drive from the shark cage diving launch site, making it perfect for anyone doing the diving. The lodge is cozy, well-maintained, and has a peaceful atmosphere. The hosts were welcoming and provided excellent local recommendations. A perfect spot for anyone visiting Gansbaai—highly recommended!

Despite the no smoking signs some guests have clearly smoked in the room.
