The room was spacious. The staff spoke many languages and they were overall very accommodating. During my stay there was a sake tasting and yukata rental service which were so much fun. Everything was worth the price, although on the pricey side, I never felt like I was being overcharged.

Everything has been amazing! A full immersion in Japanese culture! The staff is kind and considerate, the rooms directly from a movie, the dinner delicious. We felt welcome from the first minute to the last. Our host was lovely: she took very well care of us. She made sure to satisfy our needs and requests in such a kind and professional way. This warm, welcoming behavior was far beyond what we could expect, and it was absolutely excellent.

Cannot recommend Gion Kyoka enough. Actually, I'd prefer to give a negative review to prevent everyone from booking this lovely ryokan in the most amazing location in Gion Kyoto. Their team went above and beyond to make arrangements for our party at temples like Saiho-ji. Thank you Miyata-san and the rest of your staff for making our stay exceptional. I hope to visit again soon.

The staff were very accommodating and super friendly. They helped us with luggage transportation and helped clarify getting a gluten-free meal for the breakfast. The rooms were exactly as in the pictures and really comfortable. I would definitely recommend this Ryokan to anyone going to Kyoto. Simply stunning. Lovely to stay in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. Our lady was exceptional, giving first class treatment in talking us through many dishes she served, constantly topping our water, cleaning our teapot. V filling so be warned and you get to try things you wouldn’t get these days or in chain hotels. The onsen was a relief from the long journey. The futons v comfy. It was so unique to switch off, enjoy tranquility.

The hosts were extremely gracious, and I love that it’s family-owned, in the building they live in! There is lovely tatami in the rooms and pretty comfy futons, with beautiful, minimalist decoration. Yukata and tea were provided for a full, relaxing ryokan stay.

An authentic ryokan, in a building that's probably well over 100 years old. The rooms have tatami mats and futons and the onsen is beautiful. It's like staying in someone's home! This is not a super-swish modern hotel, so if that's what you want go elsewhere, but if you want a place with real character, staffed by people who treat you as long-lost friends, then this is the place for you. We will certainly return next time we're in Kyoto.

If you want to spend a few nights in a real ryokan (not the edulcorated-for-tourist replicas), this might be the real deal. Wooden and paper panels, tatami, futons, internal garden, traditional shower, in-room tea-set, yukatas, and many other details. My kids (14 and 11 y.o) said this was the best hotel in our 3-weeks-trip throughout Japan. The staff is very kind and eager to make your stay great.
