LITERALLY THE BEST EXPERIENCE IN JAPAN. I am a Japanese American and have been to Japan several times and have stayed at different ryokans but this exceeded my expectations. First of all, the beauty of this hotel from the moment you walk in. I literally gasped when I walked in front of the ryokan. It is so breathtaking and you can see and feel the history of this ryokan. The lobby is on the 5th floor so when you first go, it's very confusing but after your first try you can basically navigate the ryokan very easily. The hotel staff were extremely professional and very friendly. They welcome you with hot tea and a cake and explain everything in detail. You are then escorted by a staff member to your room to explain everything. I got the bigger room and OMG the room was amazing. It was worth every penny! The private onsen with the beautiful balcony! We had a fully stocked complimentary fridge along with tea and coffee. There was a kotatsu in my room, a full living room, and two beds with the most fluffy comforter ever. We also received a Kaiseki style breakfast and dinner and the service was amazing there as well. The dinner was an 11 course dinner and it was amazing! I would have stayed there for a week if it wasn't for the price. I highly recommend!
Minakami
Located along Houshi River, Houshi Onsen Chojukan features a public hot spring bath, Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi and Japanese cuisine. A wooden building stemming from 100 years ago, the property breathes a historical atmosphere. Exceptional & best onsen experience at the heritage onsen bath. All 3 public onsen are beautifully crafted in old wood and very well maintained with their original status. Having visited many onsen in Japan, their largest bath was truly something that I would never forget. It's also very nice that they have men/women/mix time schedule that balanced both tradition & modern needs.
Ikaho Onsen, Shibukawa
The air-conditioned rooms have tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding. A flat-screen TV, a fridge and an electric kettle with green tea bags are included in each. The en suite bathroom comes with a hairdryer. The kaiseki breakfast and dinner were amazing! They were able to accommodate my vegetarian diet!! All the meals were delicious and filling. The futons are super comfy to sleep on. They provided yukatas to sleep in as well, as to walk inside the ryokan and outside around town too if you choose. And the service was amazing!! One of our cousins unfortunately twisted her ankle while we were hiking in the area and they recommended a great local clinic to take her to, brought ice packs and bags and a shower chair for her to use as well. The in room massage that we booked was also great! Major props to our masseuse who got out alot of my knots. Prior to staying here, when I learned that my room was not considered a non-smoking room, I was super concerned as I have asthma and can't handle the smell of smoke. But they were able to air it out or do something as we didn't smell any smoke at all! I was super grateful and definitely relieved about this. One of the best ryokans I've stayed at and I would definitely stay here again if I'm in the area!! Very close to the iconic stone steps.

As usual great dinner, this time in the tatami room and not the restaurant, made it even better. It doesn't feel crowded even though a lot of rooms were reserved. Onsen was perfect. A must stay in the Takasaki area.
Shuttle from train station. Friendly staff. Traditional experience. Provided with yukata, swimwear and slippers for stay. Food was beautiful. Onsen are exceptional. Scenery is unbelievable.
Everything was perfect, the food, the onsen, the rooms, the staff. A real traditional ryokan. Highly recommended
Me and my friends stayed at this lovely ryokan for one night. We enjoyed our spacious room and the private and public Onsen hot springs of the hotel. The hotel is located in a nice central spot which is great for exploring Kusatsu Onsen. The food and services were good.
It was a beautiful stay and our first experience at a ryokan. We were made to feel very special from the moment we arrived, until the time we checked out. The meals were lovely. Lots of interesting things to try for both dinner and breakfast and dressed in the provided yukatas. We loooooved our private onsen in our room and also tried two of the three private onsens on site which can be used by any guest pending availability. Beautiful views! The town is also lovely but be prepared for the sulfur smell from the hot springs!
Western style room was great! The tatami room had ample room for several futons, in addition to a couple beds outside the tatami room. Open concept with sliding doors was great for our group (6 people) so we can chat and hangout freely, and slide the doors shut at night for privacy. Breakfast was good. The outdoor onsen was really nice.
Kusatsu is a beautiful town, built around a hot spring. The hotel (ryokan) was located 2 blocks from the central area - well within easy walking distance. It was a perfect town and hotel for a 24-hour visit. Lots of stores and artisanal food in town. At the hotel, we enjoyed the public onsen as well as an hour in a private room. The kaiseki (multi-course) dinner was excellent as was the breakfast.
Rooftop onsen was gorgeous. If you're reserving make sure to get it while there is still light to view the mountains. If not you can use the gendered sides anytime during their open hours. Staff was exceptional. Spacious rooms with tatami floors. The full ryokan experience in a classic onsen town. 10/10
Room was large, enjoyed the provided yukata and the Ryokan exclusive onsens.
The location was lovely, the grounds were beautiful, and the staff was bilingual and very friendly, and the private onsen was extremely nice. The futons were quite comfortable and I loved having baskets and yukatas available to take around town.
