The staff were exceptional, to the point where I feel a 10 is not a high enough rating. Everyone was amazing and understanding, even with the slight language barrier. Set in the peaceful TogattaOnsen, a very rural town. The area is easier to explore by car. The food was unbelievably good, we did half board, enjoying both breakfast and dinner Japanese style. The service was excellent, all the staff were so helpful, even with my limited Japanese. If you want a relaxing place, this is it, they have both public and private baths available (private is extra cost).
Togatta Onsen, Zao
The ryokan offers an Asian or vegetarian breakfast. Guests can relax in the on-site bar or lounge. The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in. The room, the food, the view, the staffs, the wild cat in the private onsen, and everything else… The ENTHUSIASM, KNOWLEDGE AND WARMTH of the friendly people working in the hotel - Especially Mr. Li Fan - because of his thoughtful arrangements, I delightedly experience the resort’s services and got to see what I wanted to see in the Zao area - with EASE and PEACE like a breeze!!! 🤩🙏 Oh, I must emphasize that - Mr. Li speaks English and Mandarin FLUENTLY - that’s… definitely NOT easy to run into in Japan!!! And Ms. 橫山道子 - She is SUPER FRIENDLY!!! 🙏 I am very happy and grateful for my 一期一會 in 竹泉莊!

Akiu Onsen, Sendai

A buffet breakfast is available at the ryokan. At TAOYA Akiu, the family-friendly restaurant is open for dinner and serves Japanese cuisine. The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in.
Taoya Akiu is, in short, fantastic. Location is 2min walking from the bus stop from/to Sendai, but to get there and from there they offer a free shuttle bus (require reservation, ideally now than one day before).
The few attractions in the area are all reachable by walking.
The resort is huge but services are distributed well and moving around is efficient. Basically everything is included in the price and offered as part of the staying: there are free drink -including alcoholic beverages- and snacks, you can choose your yukata among the different colours avaliable. There are multiple relaxing areas which are all nice and cozy, and there is even a shop inside.
The onsen (baths) are gorgeous as you see in the pics. There are 4, two indoor and two outdoor that are assigned in pair to males and females, switching every day (this is standard for Onsen places) so you can try both even if you only stay one night.
Check in and out are quick and staff is polite as always in Japan.
Both dinner and breakfast are buffet style with quite a huge selection.
The room is amazing, large for Japanese standards (and I mean really large) and beautiful with beds in a japense style section in the middle of the room.
Super recommended.

Phenomenal stay! The staff was so friendly and professional. The views are one of the best I’ve ever seen! The onsen views are breathtaking. We also booked the private bath and it was perfect! We only had traditional breakfast and it was divine. We loved every minute of our stay here! We’ll definitely be back! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
The staff was very helpful and with excellent English. I had a room in traditional Japanese style, it was huge and comfortable (unless you don't like sleeping on futon). I couldn't go to onsen , but it seemed really nice. And they have really good cosmetics in the bathroom.
Friendly welcome by owners, loved our Ryokan room. Bath Onsen was nice and hot
Fantastic breakfast (including sashimi and tempura), very nice hot spring (onsen), central location and great service. I’d book this hotel again.
The entrance to the metro & underground food, restaurant & shopping area is across the street, so very convenient. The spa hot spring 'onsen' bath (Not included in room price) has also a steamroom: it looks modern, well maintained and although not that large, it is very nice.
The private onsen, the futon beds, the space in the tradition room the view from room
I loved the friendly family greeting as I arrived after a very long day of touring Sendai and Matsushima. The place was exactly as advertised...a traditional Japanese Inn which is what I expected. A large tatami room, slightly dated, but with everything I needed for a comfortable night's stay and great value for money, even adding the taxi fare from the port. Hot water instantly in the in-room tub and very clean. It is ten minutes walk to Matsushima Station, but further from the main tourist activity near Matsushima Kaigan Station.
A traditional japanese style ryokan, with all the bells and whistles: tatami floor, futon beds, yukata, own onsen. The room was lovely, the food tasty and the owners extremely friendly. Can only recommend.
Comfy rooms, fresh sheets, yukata. Tatami mats are clean and comfy. Friendly couple and cute dogs!! We felt very welcome. Please use „Takagimachi“ if you come by train and have luggage, better streets/concrete and space on the sidewalk. Best thing: tattoo-friendly Onsen on 3rd floor!!!
