The breakfast was the tastiest and most eye-pleasing meal I had in my entire 2 weeks-trip. The clam soup was so fresh. The host helped to call the previous hotel I stayed because I left my adaptor & mobile charger there. He was kind to also let me use his charger that night. The room was warm in chilly autumn night and I had a good sleep after soaking in hot bath. It was rainy when I arrived and left the ryokan but because of the hospitality I received, I wished I could have stayed there for another night or 2.

In this ever changing, chaotic and even crazy world, I admire a well-run family business (small or large) which passes on from generation to generation, like the Tanakaya (since 1911). My wife and I have one of the five larger rooms with superb views of the Japanese garden with architectural and water features (charming with the new snow cover). The included Kaiseki dinner (delicious, sumptuous, but not too elaborate or overly filling) and breakfast are served not in our room but in a separate and private dinner room, which we like. The clear-water onsen is not huge and indoor only, but has full glass panels facing a small bamboo grove in the garden. Old-fashioned warm and attentive service attitudes prevailed. A mature lady of the 4th generation greeted us when we arrived, another of the 5th generation briefed us, and a third lady was assigned to take us to our room, serve us dinner and breakfast and prepare our beddings. All three of them waited for us when we checked out, and followed our small shuttle bus as it drove out to the parking lot and onto the road to wave us goodbye despite the snow and cold weather. We saw members of the 6th generation chatting and playing in the lounge just before dinner the evening before, while we were viewing the manuscripts and books of a poet (also a member of the family) in a display room near the reception, I wish the traditions of excellence and service of this small ryokan (and many others) will continue to be passed on to the next generations.

Guests can enjoy the indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths and request massages for an extra cost. Free WiFi is available at the lobby and Japanese Yukata robes are provided for all guests. Staff was wonderful, polite. Even one young man who was originally from Taiwan could speak some English and was very helpful. The food was excellent and plenty of variety. Plan to return.

The shuttle driver picking g us up from the local train station and also dropping off / picking up for dinner was incredible.

Also, the bus stop was just outside the property, making it easy to take public transport there. We were able to visit Shirakawa-go and Suganuma World Heritage sites.

Located in the Gokayama hot-spring area, Gokasanso offers Japanese and Western-style accommodations with a flat-screen TV. Guests can relax in the indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths and wear Japanese Yukata robes. The room had incredible views of the snowy mountains, the meals had a lot of fresh, local, and seasonal food, the hot spring was great, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Featuring 3-star accommodation, Shiroyamasou is situated in Asahi, 44 km from Toyama-kō and 15 km from Kurobe-Unazukionsen Station. The property is around 20 km from Kurobe Gorge, 25 km from Uozu Station and 26 km from Ariso Dome. The ryokan features rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. The room was spacious and the facilities were clean and nice. The bathroom was also very comfortabele with a nice onsen bath.
