The town has a number of interesting shops for homeware, clothing and home-produced preserves and food stuffs. There is a good range of restaurants and we enjoyed our meals at Clementine's, Gosto and the Clarens Brewery. Most places are to be found around the central grassy square and they are very easy to access..

Clarens is over commercialised.
Clarens is over commercialised. It mostly consists of numerous shops consisting of items you can find in many other places. The Emporium was a favourite. Excellent owner with a lot of details on the figuribes sold there. I thoroughly enjoyed buying my Burmese figure there. The art galleries are a must. Personally Clarens for me is more of a stop to go hiking and go to Golden Gate. It is too busy, bad roads - and I am used to potholes. The Protea hotel in the middle of town was a let down. Such a big hotel in nature was unnecessary. If you want to walk and just look at shops the town will work for you. Personally for me this is a good area to stop and go hiking and take a break from the city but other than that not somewhere I will visit frequently.

The hiking trails around Clarens are very well worth while doing and are not too strenuous, provided that you keep to the ones lower down the mountainside.
The town square is where it all happens and is a lovely buzz. Food outlets are good and plentiful.

The Clarens Conservancy is well looked after.
The Clarens Conservancy is well looked after. We paid R40 for a map and R30 each for a 7-day ticket and the money is well used to maintain a wonderful network of walks along the river and the side of the mountains. For us this was the highlight, although we also enjoyed visiting the shops on the central common. Our only disappointment was that the drought meant that the waterfalls were dry!
Based on our culinary experience, at the to-rated restaurant, I suggest you stick to the traditional "country" favourites and resist the tempation to try the more "gourmet" dishes
Clarens is a great place for combining activity with relaxation and it still suprises me how close it is to Joburg (less than 3,5 hours) on decent roads and that having been in South Africa for almost 30 years, this was our first visit. Btw we did not even get to the Golden Gate National Park this time but will do that at our next visit.
It was our second stay and hopefully not our last. What a wonderful place with everything you could possibly need. It is set on a very pretty farm and easy to reach Clarens or Bethlehem. Minda is amazing and does everything she can to make you feel at home. We were welcomed with delicious brownies waiting for us in our room and the fire all set up for us to light. They also have Braai meals you can pre-order to cook in your own private Braai complete with a beautifully made Salad and farm bread. Definitely a stop you need to make. Thank you.
From the hospitality from Karel, Bianca and staff, to the 5 star self catering apartment with all the little extra touches, this is my go to place from now on when visiting Clarens. Location was perfect. Within walking distance to the center which was ideal as you are not disturbed by the noise from the restaurants etc in the evenings. The views of the mountain from each room are spectacular which is a bonus. The breakfast made by Bianca was 5 star.
This place is so amazing. From the location (right outside Clarens but far enough to have wide open spaces) to the little touches that make your stay so special. I wish I could have stayed longer. Johan was there to meet us and was so friendly. Unfortunately, we didn't get to walk down to the river, will definitely do that if (when) we come stay again. Chocolates and welcome drinks, comfy beds, so lovely and quiet, and the garden is so beautiful.
This was one of the best hotels I have slept👍👍👍👍👍 not only the beautiful room with our terrace , but the staff was exceptional friendly and nothing was to much💐👍 the breakfast outstanding, also dinner.
Romantic with candle light and flowers , always a little something in the room before sleeping, a welcome Prosecco .the manager and owner asked us every day how we were doing.🥳💐🥰🤩🇳🇱🌹🙏❤️ highly recommending
A beautiful Cottage in Clarens. I went on a Holiday with my Daughter , and it was perfect. A beautiful experience , Self Catering and everything you need is there. In the Cold the Fire place kept us warm and will definitely go back. The host was wonderful , accommodative and very Welcoming. There's a beautiful walk way for early risers like myself
The attention to detail in this hotel is unmatched. From a face cloth to help remove make up, a shower that has the perfect water pressure, abundant supply of amazing coffee and staff that make you feel like royalty. The hot breakfasts each morning were deliciously enjoyed overlooking the Clarens Valley.
360 days to have fun 360 ways!!!!
Little gem in the heart of Clarens. What we thoroughly enjoyed about the main house:
- the place was nicely laid out, spacious, good decor and everything you can think of. If you don’t have something, just ask Bianca and she will sort you out
- comfortable beds
The owner was very lovely and welcoming
The bedding was very clean and very comfy and the owner made an effort to provide with electric blanket. We enjoyed every moment during winter season. I definitely recommend this beautiful romantic establishment
Great option for a quick stay in Clarence. Centrally located and very fair price. We arrived late and even though the restaurant (which forms part of the hotel) was closed the chef whipped us up some spaghetti!
Nice location close to the central square in Clarens. Rooms are basic, but clean. Manager responded to our complaint about the bed being excessively noisy by moving us to another room. Appreciated!
Most beautiful Free State farm with the most amazing views. Close to Bethlehem and Clarens. Easy to find the farm - just off the main road. Our room was very stylish furnished and clean.
We had a very good overnight stay. Access was easy and host very accommodating with serving an extra early breakfast. The gardens are beautiful and the farm is quiet and peaceful
Location, Rooms, Facilities. Very nice garden. They are pet friendly. Fran was also friendly and accommodating. Very nice lounge, dining room area and fully equipped kitchen.
The hotel is located as you come into Clarens with beautiful pine trees surrounding it. We enjoyed our stay, rooms were clean with nice white bedding & friendly staff.
