Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.
Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.
Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.
The cable car up to Monte is great. Don't miss the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo near the harbour. We visited the botanical gardens and the Palheiro Gardens by bus. The buses are not very frequent so it's best to check the timetables. There are lots of good restaurants in the old town and by the cathedral. Be aware that museums are shut on Sunday and Monday.

The island of Madeira has many aspects to recommend it.
The island of Madeira has many aspects to recommend it. Funchal is a pleasant town as are many of the other villages and locations.
With much of Europe in danger of over tourism and often of a questionable kind, Madeira is noticeably avoided by the worst elements - stag and hen groups and others who impact upon the quiet enjoyment of people not part of their group.
As a cruise liner destination, plan trips and excursions on days that the liners are absent. 5000 people heading for the same place can be a challenge.

Just such a pretty island and the city itself has such a lot to look at and do. There are restaurants on every corner and often at very good prices so you are spoilt for choice. We walked everywhere but we did get a bus up to the Botanic Gardens. The only thing to be aware of is the cruise liners, one day we had 3 of the ugly mammoths in the harbour with about 10000 extra people crowding the town. It's worth checking that there are cruise-ship free days while you are there.

Funchal is a wonderful city with something for everybody, I believe. Whether you're looking to get out on the water, eat in the multitude of cafes and restaurants, shop at the markets or the many lovely shops, or visit the Cathedral, the stunning gardens, the cable car, and all the other activities and other beautiful places, there is plenty to do. The bus network is excellent for getting around if your feet won't carry you, and tourist information is very helpful with thorough information and tickets to get you where you want to go. Funchal boasts live music in various styles, and there is a gentle buzz about the place. Don't worry if your plane arrives during the evening, as plenty of restaurants and shops selling food will remain open until late. This is no sleepy backwater!

Funchal is the most magical place, every time you look, there something new to see experience. I have been 3 times in last few months. As a person with complex disabilities my safety is paramount. The people are kind and welcoming.
They love and care for their Island, it is spotless.
Colourful, a true multi sensory experience with the scents of flowers and trees, the ocean, the sound of the ocean and hustle bustle
It is very hill but doable. Local transport is very efficient and cheap too.
There is s many hotels and and restaurants to eat from
I stayed at CR7 the customer service was outstanding. The Grand Hotel also went above and beyond, as did Turim Maria and Four Views. The Pestena Casino studios was lovely and staff helpful. Pestena Casio was a stunning hotel but the reception staff were particularly rude and uncompassionate. The Porter was amazing and breakfast staff, bar staff and spa staff, in fact some of the reception staff were.
Monte Gardens is a must blissful journey into dream like gardens
Watching cruise ships
Catamaran trip was fantastic we got to see 3 or 4 pods of dolphins
Atlantic Pearl were wonderful and took great care of me
We went on a lot of tours all which I can recommend especially green devil safari.
The christmas markets a joyful experience there even a free Christmas train
Cathedrals and church's are in abundance each breathtaking
Natural pools are must

A city with plenty of things to see and do.
A city with plenty of things to see and do. Not a beach resort. The centre is busy and increasingly touristy but this has to be seen from the local perspective. Not so long ago the young people had to leave to find work, now they are coming back. Lido area has the big hotels and is well set up for tourism. Older parts of town are charming, quiet and have a genuinely friendly atmosphere. Many day-trip walks and tours are available and good value. Personally I would rather stay in Funchal and do day-trips rather than stay over in the other towns which, though pretty, are rather dull by comparison!
The room was nice and the staff were lovely. The gym and pool facilities were great. Breakfast had lots of options and the pool bar had good food.
The hotel is about a 30 minute walk to the old town in Funchal. But there are good restaurants nearby. There are also grocery stores, pharmacies etc. There's actually a shopping centre about a 20 minute walk away. We would recommend O Dragoeiro for a nearby restaurant. There are some open air pools nearby and free public steps to the water where you can swim in the sea.
This hotel really was the perfect break away for myself and my mother, lots of really lovely restaurants and bars close by, and a short walk/bus ride away from the Old Town. The view of the sea and pool from our balcony was magnificent, sunsets were very special. There were great options for breakfast and staff were friendly. Loved the saltwater pool and lots of areas to sunbathe. It was our first time in Madeira and we both said we would return and happily would stay at the Pestana Carlton again.
We had a great stay at the Apartamento Batista by Horizon View Madeira. Edgar was amazing, he made the communication very easy and was super helpful even when our flight got cancelled and we had to change our check-in time. The apartment is great, it's big and it has all the right utensils. It was easy to get to Funchal center by foot (around 25min) but it's easier if you have a car (there's also a private parking in the property which was a great plus). I would definitely stay again.
Our recent stay at this Old Madeiran villa was a mixed experience, marked by both its historical charm and several notable challenges.
The villa itself is a treasure trove of history, adorned with artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries, offering a unique glimpse into the past. For history enthusiasts, this aspect of the stay was undoubtedly fascinating. Additionally, the presence of books and maps about Madeira's attractions provided valuable insights for our explorations.
Perfect location in Funchal old town, perfect for travellers without a car, because the bus station is less than minute walk away. Really close are also Zona Velha, seaside, market place, lots of restaurants and bars etc. In the studio there is washing machine, perfect for dirty clothes after hiking, kitchen with basicly everything you need for simple meal preparation, small cute bathroom and quite some prospects about Madeira activities.
This is not the first time we stayed at a Madeira Best Apartment. As in two previous occasions, the facilities and the hostess were as good as it gets. Ligia is the most caring and attentive hostess we have ever encountered in our many travels. She will go out of her way to help you with whatever you need. The apartment is beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you can possibly need. The views are amazing from every room.
The hotel and its facilities are great and very clean. We enjoyed our time in the outdoor and indoor pools and squash court. The room was clean and spacious and the location was great with many very good restaurants in short walking distance. The downtown area was a 15-20 min walk or a quick bus ride which stops right outside the hotel. We loved our time in Madeira and would consider coming back to stay at this hotel again.
We got in late and they had freshly made sandwiches and a bottle of Madeira wine waiting for us!! The location was remote while being close to everything and is easy walking distance to the tropical garden, the most beautiful botanical garden I’ve ever seen. It was easy to get into Funchal but a nice distance away to feel more secluded. The cafe had a wonderful view and a cozy patio. We would definitely stay here again!
Number 15 Ocean & City View Villas is a super accommodation!!! The location is great! You have a beautiful view of Funchal and the ocean. The apartment was super clean and huge. The terrace is great. The hosts are also fantastic and helpful. If we go to Madeira again, we will definitely come back here! Funchal is definitely the best place to stay and Number 15 Ocean & City View Villas is a fantastic choice!
The hotel is well located right in the centre of Funchal, we were taking the ferry to Porto Santo the next day and it was just a 12 minute walk. The apartment was huge with a small kitchenette and dining/seating area - it was great value space for the cost. The reception staff were super friendly and the hotel in general was in a nice quiet area.
Sparkling clean, small boutique hotel in a quiet area. It is not a 5*, but all hotels in Madeira have inflated rankings, so we kind of expected it. The fact that it’s not in the old town is an advantage, because it is very quiet at night. Buses run regularly to the old town. Good selection for breakfast. We would happily stay again.
Fantastic hotel/apartment house at the heart of Funchal. Everything is close (shops, restaurants, bars,..) free garage to park your car, amazing rooftop with pool and views, very helpful staff, excellent communication, always something above the expectation. If you plan to come to Madeira, you want to stay at Three house hotel!
Two great swimming pools, the indoor one is heated. The location is perfect, close to the bus lines, forum madeira shopping mall, promenade, lots of restaurants. The room was great, clean and had kitchenette. The breakfast was great, eggs, bacon, fruits, juices. Coffee wasn't the best.
Stayed at this hotel for a work trip to Madeira in February 2023. Excellent service from the staff, big room with a comfortable bed. Conveniently located, close to restaurants and not too far from the city center of Funchal. Cozy outdoor area with a pool.
Lovely house with great outdoor space.
Location is quiet and fantastic being so close to the Old Town and Funchal centre .
Off street parking for those that hire a car
Would definitely check for availability when we return to Madeira. Paul and Sue
We had a great stay at the Next Hotel. They upgraded us to an ocean front room that was amazing. Great value for the price. location was great as well. 10 min walk to town and 3 min walk to a ton of restaurants. would stay again if in Madeira.
It is right in the middle of Funchal. Close to all restaurants and cafes. There is even a little restaurant right outside the apartment which offers amazing traditional Portuguese/Madeiran cuisine. Perfect location to stay whilst in Madeira!
The location of the hotel is perfect, near the Old Town of Funchal. The staff was smiling and they cleaned our room every day, towels changed etc. The room is basic but really comfy and would recommend it :)
