FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Chester is a beautiful small town packed with history and old buildings. We visited the beautiful Chester Cathedral and took a hop-on-hop-off tour to see the most of the town efficiently. We highly recommend to go to Chester Market (e.g. for lunch) and to Bear and Billet for traditional Sunday roast. Dinner at Hickory's Smokehouse at the riverbank was lovely (table reservation recommended), and Roman Garden next to it is a must. A walk around the city center on the old Roman Walls was also nice. There are loads of different kind of shopping possibilities available, and also some very good charity shops worth visiting. We were lucky and had nice spring weather all the time during our visit.

Chester is a melting pot of culture and social classes which I loved. Shopping, bars, restaurants and nightlife, markets and live music. Friendly people and lovely walk along the river. Old buildings full of character plus modern twists. The old cathedral was lovely too. I cant wait to visit this wonderful city again soon!

So much history. The rows are unique incorporating shops, restaurants and bars, some of which are unique and full of historical facts. The sick to death museum is really interesting. Didn't get chance to go in the Cathedral. Chester Zoo near by is amazing.

Chester is beautiful, it has many shops, restaurants, pubs etc We visited the Food Show at Chester Racecourse which is always good for buying those special treats. The Food Show is well organised and provides something for everyone. Chester has a wide range of shops to suit all budgets. Chester has many restaurants to suit all tastes too. We have visited The Bluebell for tapas and the Koconut Grove, both have been amazing.

Huge, beautiful and fascinating Cathedral with excellent cafe food in stunning surroundings. Lovely old and interesting buildings in the town centre. Mostly traffic-free centre. All the big names if shopping is your thing, plus a wide range of indies. Grosvenor park and riverside walking is a delight. Walking almost the circumference of the town along the city walls gives great views and is traffic-free. Maybe a river trip next time.

We went for a Christmas break, see try the market and just have a night away. Excellent location, arrived before our room was ready, parked up, checked in and was off to a good start. The hotel was friendly, cosy with the Xmas decorations and in an ideal spot for the city centre. The room was spacious, bathroom was lovely, nice hot, powerful shower, and dressing gowns too. The bed was comfortable, spacious. We didnt need much from the hotel but it suited our needs. the staff were friendly and a chocolate on the pillow is always a bonus!

The name alone should be enough to create the impression of a hotel with attitude. Thankfully, this doesn't extend to the reception/hospitality staff who were unfailingly polite and helpful. The hotel is located on the canal and is roughly five minutes walk to Chester railway station and the city centre. The terrace at the back of the hotel overlooks the canal and is great for people watching and toasting the end of the day with a sundowner or two.

Exceeded my expectations - quality finishes and furnishing everywhere, quiet, spacious, full of charm and elegance beyond what is customary. Thick, large towels and quality wooden hangers in the wardrobe. Lovely and large sitting room to gather in outside of room. Perfect location to walk into Chester or to village shops and restaurants. Owners are on premises and keep things to a high level. Delicious and fast breakfast service. Parking was good.

Being only 15 mins from Chester City centre but felt miles away from anywhere. Set in beautiful grounds this hotel is so peaceful. Lovely walled garden and nice areas to sit & enjoy a drink outside. Our room had a balcony with a gorgeous view of the garden and felt like a mini holiday. The pool area opens at 7am, so perfect to use first before heading out for the day. The food is excellent as was the service.
