Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays within the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even inspired a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city center over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including a fine art museum and a cathedral with impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and sidewalk cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is only 3 miles from the city center.

Carcassonne is a small walkable city with a romantic castle and a lot of history! Lots of restaurants and shops to explore. Enjoy the outdoor market on Saturday morning, between the old walled city and the "new" city. Bring good walking shoes! Friendly and helpful people even if you don't speak French.

First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle,...
First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle, listed on UNESCO World Heritage registry, Its history is well documented and presented, the staff at the castle are all so friendly and kind, they tried to give me very personal time during the visit even though my exit after the closing hour was a bit protracted because I had taken a wrong "route" - wandered into the last section of the visit first and did the exploration in the reverse order! The town itself was bucolic and relaxed, clean, serene, and safe. All the people I encountered (* except one lady, who probably was not from this town!) from shops to restaurants to tourist office to streets were very pleasant and honest (when I innocently picked up oranges to buy in a basket, for example, the fruit shop lady spontaneously inspected each pieces carefully and pointed out one of them was slightly damaged, and went to pick up a better replacement for me, which she didn't have to do!) There were a lots of region specific products, as well as international products (such as Italian Truffles, Italian fur products!), interesting and delicious food to eat, and the climate is generally much warmer than other parts of France. Sunny happy rational place like this, which retained "good old France" aspects restores in a visitor's heart rare hopes for humanity! It also seemed that there is a good size of international community with expats who settled down. You can experience exotic encounters here, so, I would not say this town is a closed up, hermetic, mono-cultural location, nor it is xenophobic.

We were very surprised at the quality of the restoration.
We were very surprised at the quality of the restoration. Also, that there are so many eating places within the walls - some a lot better than others.
Interesting displays and museums. A visit to the bascilica and castle are musts.
The bakery associated with the hotel is wonderful, especially for breakfast. Really tastefully furnished and delicious pasties. La Boulangerie de la Cité.

We really liked the walled cite , unfortunately we chose a very wet and windy day in February. There were plenty of places to keep dry within the castle though.
We had dinner in a couple of restaurants, both were absolutely fine.
We didn't think much of the Bastide, it was a bit worn out and needed some tlc. I'm sure if you visited in the summer it would of been much nicer.
The walk across the old bridge over the river is pleasant.

It is a lovely town to walk around in.
It is a lovely town to walk around in. However it is better to arrive Tuesday as there are a lot of restaurants and shops that are closed Sunday and Monday. There are some very good places to dine and a few not very good ones.
Bistro Chez Alice was the best one that I ate at.
La cité was too cold that day and the restaurant that I ste in was terrible.
Lots of junky tourists shops amid a few very high end ones…They leather clothing shop was #1++++. Expensive but top quality.

We caught the train here from Paris.
We caught the train here from Paris. The views of the walled city as we walked from the station were amazing. Coming from Australia, where there is nothing like this city, it was a sensory feast. Being able to access, walk around and enjoy the old walled city for no cost was excellent. There were many dining options, most serving Cassoulet, the local dish this region is famed for. The walled city involves a steep climb from river side, but can be accessed on the opposite side by a more accessible route. Definitely put it on your itinerary.
Great location to walk up to the old city and wander into the city.
Hotel has their own safe parking lot you can pay for daily so you can go everywhere on foot.
Very clean and staff friendly.
Regular cleaning.
Breakfast is an extra expense but very tasty and locally produced.
First night the mattress was uncomfortable but after the first night they changed all the beds and mattresses in the hotel so the problem was instantly fixed, then very comfortable indeed.
Lots of helpful information left in the room for our perusal.
The staff were so good. They literally could not do enough for you. This hotel represents excellent value for money and is only a short distance from the medieval city. A great option for those with their feet under them but do take note, it is difficult to get a taxi to take you the short trip from the attractions to this hotel. We had a family member with us who has mobility issues and this was as an issue from us. Once you are in the hotel, the staff can wrangle a taxi for you and do so with pleasure.
Having stayed here before we decided to treat ourselves to a superior room for the last night of our holiday, as the hotel’s in a brilliant location in the fantastic old city. The foyer is very welcoming and in the old part of the building, which is characterful. Breakfast buffet was varied.
To start with I proposed to my girlfriend on the walls of Carcassonne so it was a very romantic stay. The hotel is lovely, very comfy beds, lovely staff and parking onsite right next to the medieval city. All the facilities were available for our stay to be truly memorable.
Just a short walk from the hotel is the wonderful Cité de Carcassonne. I was able to get up early in the morning and walk to the castle and was able to go around the castle without any people. I wish I had had a balcony, but that’s OK. I highly recommend this hotel.
Very good standard hotel in the suburbs of Carcassonne. 30 minute walk into town and 45 minutes to the old town. Huge gated parking, great security. Staff were polite and easy to communicate with. Our room was a good size with a kitchenette, everything was perfect.
The hotel was convenient for the old town, medieval city and the station. Although situated on a busy intersection of road, it was quiet once inside. Room was clean, the bed was very comfortable, breakfast substantial and the owners were very helpful and friendly.
How can a person rate a childhood dream of staying inside a castle. The hotel we stayed in is part of the Medieval city protected by the castle. The shops and restaurants are all very good. What can you say "French food is the best" This place is very good.
It’s staying inside a Medieval city! How cool is that? The hotel had old school charm, the staff were all friendly and attentive. The restaurant is Michelin starred. Our room had a large balcony overlooking the castle rampart. So awesome.
The location of the hotel is perfect, right beside the medieval castle. The grounds of the hotel were well-maintained and the gardens were great to sit around in and have a drink. Also, the parking was very handy, right beside the hotel.
The location is perfect, next to the old city centre of Carcasonne. The bathroom, although small it was ok. The personeel was friendly. The breaksfast was very cosy and good with some products from the region like jam and cheese.
The room was clean and comfortable. Toiletries provided. The room had a jug kettle for tea making! Best of all, the hotel was only a short walk to the train station and bus services. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
wonderful location. Morning walk through the medieval city and into the castle was amazing without car, traffic, and herds of tourists. the hotel is fine and worth it. dinner at the hotel was extraordinary delicious.
The entire hotel has been completely refurbished post-pandemic, even the AC is brand new, and the interior design is wonderful! You will get a unparalleled view of the old city wall from the 10 m2 roof terrace.
Very nice view from balcony over Carcassone. The host was helpful and talkative, he provided us with the best croissants from a local bakery shop. His place has got super comfy beds and was clean :-)
The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room was very comfortable with a nice view. The hotel's terrace provides a beautiful space to relax at night and and excellent view to the medieval city.
Amazing old property, resorted to a very high standard. Fabulous view of the Medieval city. Very attentive host, good secure parking. 10 minute walk to the old city. Highly recommend.
The location was excellent, within walking distance of the old town and the medieval city. Bars & restaurants in the same street. Welcome drink on arrival.
