Germany’s oldest city and a provincial capital of the Western Roman Empire until the 3rd century, Trier is overflowing with exquisite architecture and Roman ruins such as the Amphitheater and Porta Nigra gate. The colossal Cathedral Trier is also the oldest of its kind in Germany.
The historic landmarks continue with the 2nd-century Roman bridge that crosses over the Moselle River, which also passes through nearby Luxembourg and France. Cruises along the Moselle start in Koblenz and end in Trier.
Trier was the home of Karl Marx and the 15th-century University of Trier is home to a large student population that often refers to the university as Karl-Marx-University of Trier. His birthplace is now a museum, Karl Marx House.
A wonderful example of the Christmas markets in Germany can be found each year in Trier, at Hauptmarkt Square in front of the cathedral. Make sure you check Booking.com for special deals on hotels during this period.

Trier is an interesting town, however be aware all the facilities & services you might be familiar with & expecting, may not be available. Such as; taxi, Uber, restaurants open outside of regular hours - these may all be an issue, according to what we experienced.
Some of this was due to Christmas & New Years limited hours and services. Taxis and Uber-type services are an issue, and appear unreliable.

I love Roman history so Trier was a must-see for me.
I love Roman history so Trier was a must-see for me. The main tourist attractions are easily searchable online but the city is small enough to be completely walkable. I was there at the end of November and there were already Christmas markets set up which was fun to walk around - buy the Glühwein (mulled wine) if you're there at that time.
You have to eat at Weinstube Zum Domstein! They have traditional Roman food offerings which were delicious. I loved the meal so much, especially sitting in the Roman Basement (Römer Keller) where they have displayed Roman artifacts. Such a cool dining experience.

Trier is quaint and manageable for a small city.
Trier is quaint and manageable for a small city. Friendly and hospitable locals. There were enough English-speaking workers in various establishments. I enjoyed the walking trails. The city has a lot to offer for Roman history enthusiasts. It has a far reaching and interesting history as a city in its own right.

Trier is a beautiful town with historical buildings and a lot of interesting things to see and do!
Everything is close together in walking distance!
Nice restaurants with traditional food and friendly service. Lots of shopping options for all wallets and interests. Town maps and signs all over the town are helping to find what you want.
We loved the market squares and the Weinbrunnen in the middle where you get a lovely glass of wine most hours!

The city is very historic and was not overrun by tourists at the time of our visit. We stayed two days and nights and were able to see the old town and Roman amphitheater, baths and Porta Nigra, on top of the main two cathedrals and main square and shopping. The city seems very safe and easy to access by walking or bicycling. As with other cities we visited during our two-week Germany trip, we parked the car and walked or took public transportation.

A beautiful historic city with plenty of sights to occupy visitors. Easily walkable and plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants. One of the nicest places I’ve been to in Europe & I can’t understand why it is so off the tourist track really.
I would love to return !
Clean rooms and comfortable beds, they had a breakfast option and coffee was available all day. We experienced all types of rooms during our two stays, they have Spacious apartments for rent, nice comfortable queen rooms, and even small dormer rooms for single travelers. The staff was very nice and accommodating. A good place to stay if you’re in Trier, and good for traveling around the different areas of that region of Germany.
This is a good budget hotel with nothing especially to praise (except the breakfast, which was very good) but nothing in particular to criticize, either. It is reasonably close to the main tourist attractions and very close to one of the main squares of town. And perhaps most importantly, it is close to a very nice municipal parking lot. It was the perfect hotel for a one-night stay on my motor tour of western Germany.
A simple, stylish hotel room within an easy walk to the main square of Trier. Comfortable room, spacious enough to accommodate all our luggage, good beds and pillows, a window that opened. Paid parking under the hotel with easy access to lobby and rooms. We received a very warm welcome from the young man on the front desk who was very personable and had a good sense of humour. An excellent overnight stop.
I had a wonderful stay at the apartment in Trier. Its proximity to the university, bus stops, and grocery stores made my daily routines incredibly convenient. The apartment itself was clean and neat, which I greatly appreciated. The host's hospitality was exceptional, making me feel right at home throughout my stay. I would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone visiting Trier.
Good design hotel at the bank of the Moselle. Closeby the center of Trier (15 minutes walk). Nicely decorated rooms (not all apparently are renovated already I read) and breakfast room with view on the river. Excellent shower. Good fresh breakfast. Friendly staff. Free WiFi in breakfast room and lobby. Dedicated hotel parking at the other side of the street.
A great hotel in a quiet woodland location but still not too far to walk to town (30 min) or 2 minute walk to grab a town bus. Excellent buffet breakfast and excellent bistro with a good selection of traditional German pub favourites. Great lounge facilities with self serve drinks access for after hours. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed the hotel accommodations, the friendly staff and the quality and quantity of food provided for both dinner and breakfast. We didn't use the pool or sauna but we did tour the facilities and found them to be very nice. We liked the quiet location away from central Trier but yet still found it easy to get downtown by car.
Loved the location- right on the pedestrian zone of Trier. Walk out of your door and you are surrounded by shops and restaurants. It was also great to have Aldi Sud right next door. Spacious apartment- we used mainly the kitchen and bedroom but there is also a large living room. Beds were super comfy and great shower!
Modern fairly new hotel with very clean rooms. Excellent breakfast buffet and excellent staff.
Room was not big but had everything you need incl flat screen tv and excellent bathroom with walk-in shower. Free parking in front of hotel also. But parking does fill up when hotel is well booked.
Rooms were extremely clean and quiet, even though the hotel is surrounded by two roads. The host is very kind and accommodating. I would reccomend this hotel to anyone who wants to visit Trier, even for a few days, as the rooms are very comfortable.
The location was excellent, just opposite the Porta Nigra and we were able to walk into Trier very easily from the hotel. The breakfast was very good and the dining room had excellent views of the Porta Nigra.
The hotel is nice, we were offered free beverages upon arrival, there is free parking, and it’s close to the city center. We only stayed for one night to see the Christmas market, and we had a nice stay.
Clean modern hotel, good size room, close to main attractions of Trier. Staff were very helpful with an unusual request. Enjoyed staying here at an ok price. (€87) Aircon was great and easy to manage.
Good hotel in the centre of Trier close to the historical centre. Nice breakfast. Parking available but we where on motorcycle and there was a parking place next to the hotel.
Fantastic hotel with a magnificent view over the town of Trier, very kind and caring owner of the place, great location! We enjoyed every minute of our stay!
