Beautiful, historical town with massive Templar Castle up...
Beautiful, historical town with massive Templar Castle up the hill. That alone is worth the side trip form Lisbon or Porto. Many groups buses stop for a day but it is a rushed way to experience this place. I think two nights allows for a better immersion into its history. Castle alone takes few good hours, not counting the outdoor area. Great place to slow down and feel the old energy there. Town has plenty of coffee shops and nice eateries. Picturesque river runs right through the middle of town. Totally walkable town with quaint, clean streets with plenty places along the way to stop for a coffee, ice cream or a tasty bite. If you are there on a weekend you might get a chance to get a picture with a Templar knight!

Do not miss the aqueduct on the outskirts of town as you...
Do not miss the aqueduct on the outskirts of town as you drive in - I've seen quite a few and the only better is the one in Segovia in Spain. This is a double decker that goes for half a mile, in terrific condition. I'm an aqueduct fan and this was worth a trip to Tomar by itself.
But there's more: the Templar chapel in the monastery at the top of the hill above the Praca Republica is one of those places where, just when you are beginning to feel like you've seen enough church stuff, you go holy smokes! I've never seen anything like this!
The town itself is cozy and warm, and it's worth a walk around to all the different churches and along the river. You can see everything in a day if you don't dawdle.

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Portuguese...
Nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Portuguese countryside, Tomar is a captivating town steeped in history and brimming with charm. Renowned for its magnificent Templar Castle and Convent, Tomar offers a captivating blend of medieval enchantment and modern-day allure.
The Castelo de Tomar, or Tomar Castle, stands as a testament to the power and influence of the Knights Templar, who established their stronghold in Tomar in the 12th century. This imposing fortress, adorned with intricate carvings and architectural masterpieces, is home to the Convento de Cristo, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
The Convento de Cristo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a labyrinth of grand cloisters, chapels, and chapterhouses, each whispering tales of the Knights Templar's influence. The remarkable Cloister of Silence, with its serene atmosphere and intricate tracery, is a must-see for any visitor to Tomar.

Tomar was a great surprise.
Tomar was a great surprise. A wonderful little town, easy to walk around the old town with some lovely little traditional shops and restaurants.
The Convent and Castle were truly amazing, easily the best we saw on our trip.
Would recommend Thomar Boutique hotel to stay and Casa Das Ratas for dinner.

The highlight is the convento de Christo. It is a must see.
The highlight is the convento de Christo. It is a must see. Lack of open restaurants on Sunday evening was an issue for us. Also public transport I.e. trains and buses have very limited schedules to travel there on weekends from other communities. We were coming from Coimbra and ended up using an Uber. Plan travel during the week if possible

Lovely place to visit!
Wonderful front desk staff -- friendly, and welcoming! Bartender was also so lovely to chat with and full of knowledge about the region, wines, port and all the wonderful things in Portugal. He really made our stay so interesting and we left feeling like we learned a lot from him.
Rooms are very large and well laid out with small entry way and closet. Bathrooms are very large.
The hotel itself is very clean and well cared for. It is older but it feels well maintained, not outdated or unloved. It all felt very charming and welcoming.
The Thomar Boutique Hotel is nicely located at the edge of the old town. You can easily walk to all the points of interest in Tomar. The room was spacious, immaculate, and nicely decorated, and the bathroom was beyond my expectations. There was an actual bathtub in addition to the shower. I took a long and relaxing bath. There is also a deck on the second floor with a wonderful view of the Convento do Cristo. There is free public parking nearby. It was a wonderful experience.
The location is extra convenient - right in the heart of Tomar; so it's a perfect base for both day and night time explorations. The hotel staff is incredibly kind and accommodating, and will answer any questions you might have about the region. The room was exceptional! The bed was so comfortable, we didn't want to leave! And the shower was stellar too. The little balcony was super nice! And the breakfast - fresh and delicious - features incredible variety.
Absolutely beautiful hotel. We arrived on motorbikes very early for check in and the hotel were so accommodating until our rooms were ready. Rooms are beautiful. Pool area is perfect in the heat. Lots of shade.
Tomar is lovely. Go visit the castle up the hill. You are not allowed into the castle grounds but the monastery next door is amazing.
Go check out the medieval restaurant but make sure to book. It gets very busy.
Perfect location, on the main pedestrian street, right in the beautiful center of Tomar.
I didn’t really stay at Hotel Cavaleiros but Residencial União which I was offered by the friendly man at the reception (ruled by the same owners, I guess)
The building was old and charming, and so was the room, nice, comfortable and quiet, facing rear as requested (good view anyway)
Good wifi. Amazing price. Great place!
The hotel was amazing. My best hotel on the Portuguese Camino. I ended up getting injured on the Camino and had to stay a few days in this town unexpectedly. What an amazing town. What an amazing staff that works at this hotel. They were incredible taking care of me..my injury ..and anything I needed. I will always be grateful and when I go back to Tomar, I will definitely stay there. Highly recommended
Flat is about 10 minute walk from train station. Entrace is located in a perfect area between the main square, shops, restaurants (1-3 minutes) and the castle (less than 10 minutes). Flat is very spacious (2 bedrooms), clean and comfortable with a good bathroom and kitchen to cook. Very good wifi and many tv chanels. Coffee and tea was include. Perfect place for our short stay in Tomar!
Everything about our stay here was perfect! The location is excellent; we were able to walk to all the sights, including the Castle of the Knights Templar. Breakfast was lovely. Our room and the common areas were spotlessly clean and well maintained. Best of all, the friendliness and helpfulness of all staff was stellar. Hotel Republica is an ideal place to stay in Tomar.
Everything!!! This was one of our best stays in Portugal. Room we selected was a bit on the smaller side but we were hardly in the room except to sleep. The bed was super comfy and shower fantastic. Coffee/tea available all the time as was the honesty bar. Excellent breakfast! Staff was super nice and friendly. Parking nearby (6 euros/24 hours underground and secure!
We really had a wonderful time at Casa da Avo Genoveva. Despite arriving after check-in time, we were warmly welcomed by the owner, Maria Manuela.
The hotel is very comfortable, carefully decorated, thoughtfully equiped and at a perfect location to reach Tomar. We also liked the generous breakfast very much.
We only regret that we could only stay for one night!
We were very well looked after by Annabelle, who organised a very tasty breakfast with a great pot of coffee. The hotel was spotless, comfy bed, good lighting and lovely big bathroom with generous shower. Very close to castle, cafes, and restaurants. Very good value for money and would highly recommend for anyone wishing to visit Tomar sights.
The house has a lot of history and was the residency for the nobility of Portugal.
I stayed in the apartment which was a very generous size. The property in in the centre of town and near to restraunts and cafe Also nearby to the square and castle. Wish I had time to explore fully but will revisit.
The room was lovely and comfortable but talking with Antonio was the best-he is a wealth of knowledge about Tomar and the history of Knights Templar! I appreciated the kitchen and sitting by his warm fireplace sharing a glass of wine. I found the bed very comfortable and not hard like some.
We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The room was spacious, clean and generally comfortable. Tomar is a small place consequently all points of interest are within walking distance.
Although the hotel does not have its own private parking, public free parking is literally in front of the hotel
The hotel was very comfortable, clean and extremely well run. It had a calm atmosphere and it was lovely to be able to use the pool/spa area. Lots of nice touches like complimentary herbal tea and biscuits available in the spa. Breakfast was lovely as were all the staff.
Super thoughtfully designed place, efficient and inviting details and appliances everywhere. Very spacious for two people. The most comfortable mattress we've slept on in Portugal as well! Very friendly and responsive staff. Excellent location, walkable to everything.
Staff was super nice. Dorm, bathroom and kitchen were clean and spacious. Best lockers I've ever seen, where I could even store my small trolley AND daypack. Breakfast was also great.
Best hostel I ever had so far in Portugal. Many thanks to the great team!
We LOVED this place! It was perfect. Beautiful apartment in a central location. Comfortable, spacious and every detail was considered. We only stayed one night but if we return to Portugal, we’ll stay here as a base to explore the wider region.
