Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
The hotel is located next to the station, so it is very easy to get there. We could see the station from our room, but did not hear the trains. The room is clean and we had space for our backpacks and to hang some clothes. The beds are comfortable and soft. The bathroom was clean and we had a bath which was nice. There is also a Japanese bath on the top floor which you can use if your staying at the hotel. From the hotel it is approximately 15 minutes to get to Matsumoto Castle. There are convenience stores and restaurants nearby.
+ Excellent location with the best views on the mountains and river. 5 minutes walk to the bus station. It is also very quiet as it is the last hotel in the row of hotels
+ very friendly and helpful staff. We were late arriving at the Akandana parking (warning GPS does not always work in the mountains) and missed the bus to Kamikochi. The staff arranged a taxi to pick us up very quickly.
+ Half Board included a 7 course dinner which was very nice
+ Breakfast buffet had the best Western options I have seen so far in Japan
Hotel was a stone's throw away from the matsumoto train and bus station which was very very convenient. We love that its also close to a lot of restaurants, so no problem eating out. Its a small and basic hotel, nothing fancy but it is very comfortable, clean, and staff are great. The lobby had a WONDERFUL view of the mountains, pity we only saw it on our last day because previous days were cloudy. The rooms are small but spacious enough for japan standards. Bathroom was also small but again this is standard for Japan.
The owners where incredibly nice and welcoming, the service was exceptional and made our stay very comfortable.
Breakfast was great (You can choose between Japanese or Western style breakfast).
Great location in Matsumoto with free rental bikes for the hotell guests, and parking if you come by car as we did.
The owner also sells locally produced honey, which tasted amazing when we tried it when we arrived back home.
Excellent Japanese style hotel with tatami mat floors, yukata to wear, Onsen on the top floor, futon style bed, delicious Japanese breakfast, no street shoes worn in hotel. Staff was welcoming, helpful, and pleasant despite my limited Japanese language ability. A flat walk to both Matsumoto castle and the Yayoi Kusama exhibit at the Art Museum. A short walk from the train station.
Very comfortable and cozy visit. The staff are both incredibly friendly and also very helpful. They let us borrow bikes free of charge so we could bike into town and gave us a discount on tickets to view Matsumoto Jo Castle. The bath was clean and very refreshing! If you're looking for the ryokan experience, you can't choose anywhere else besides Ryokan Seifuso!
The staff was very friendly and super helpful ,the size of my twin bed room exceed my expectation plus having my own bathroom with shower , after 3 nights sleeping in ryokans with shared bathroom while trekking Nakasendo trail this a real bonus .
The location is very convenient to the bus and train station and a multi level mall across the street .
Hotel is pretty new and modern.
Room was cozy and everything was super clean and shiny. On the first floor there is an onsen, you can also get a pajama and as many amenities as you want.
Staff was nice and professional, location was also good (only 10 min away from the station). Matsumoto castle is 5 min alway.
Bed was really comfortable, I had a good sleep.
One of the best onsen and ryokan we've experienced. The unique milky hot spring water is really gentle on the skin. Our children had a great time at the onsen too. The kaiseki dinner was exceptional. We stayed here for 2 nights and were given a treat to two very different 13-course dinner. Fantastic experience.
The hotel's location is very good, a short walk from both the train and bus stations and not far from Matsumoto Castle and several museums. Service was friendly, and about as efficient as one would expect from a rather busy "business" hotel with its crowded breakfast area and check-in/check-out crush.
Friendly and professional staffs - managed to get laundry done and luggage sent to another city
Good variety of breakfast items - both Japanese and Western
Hotel is a little aged but well-maintained which gives it a nostalgia feel. Also walkable distance (10mins) from Matsumoto Station.
The location of the hotel is near the train station. We liked the onsen and the hotel offered a traditional Japanese breakfast that was really good. We really loved being able to rent a bike for the day- FREE of charge. The staff were all very helpful and spoke English fairly well.
The property is located right opposite Matsumoto station, easy to find.
Love the Japanese style breakfast - the menu includes all the Nagano delicacies (it’s absolutely fantastic!) also the breakfast area overlooks the Japanese Alps. Very relaxing vibe. Highly recommend the place.
After being in some less good than expected places in Japan, this hotel was a breath of fresh air.
The staff were nice and professional, the entire hotel was big and clean and there was even a special free dinner.
We will definitely come again when we are back in Matsumoto.
It was very central and the room was spacious for a family. Breakfast was good as well. Service was great and the staff very kind and helpful! In general the area of the hotel was wonderful. Close to the Matsumoto Castle and there was also a convenience store nearby.
The location was further from the station than we realised but was close to the Castle which was a wonderful experience.
The Art Museum was also a worthwhile visit as the world famous Matsumoto-born artist Kusama Yayoi has a permanent exhibition.
- Centrally located just 5-7 minutes from Matsumoto Station.
- Immaculately clean.
- Room size was slightly bigger vs our room in Tokyo.
- Nice breakfast.
- Check in time was 14PM, which is earlier vs other hotels we stayed in other cities.
