Colchester is a brilliant town to visit, you have the old and new part to walk round ranging from a good collection of shops and food outlets to browse and walking round the various churches, castle, monastery ruins and lovely parks.
The town is within walking distance of both train stations, taxis are plenty also. Take a good pair of comfy walking attire for feet as you will be walking up and down gradients!! A great place to visit on the local bus is Manningtree where there is a antiques emporium to walk round with a great cafe in the high street for food.
If visiting Colchester for the first time I recommend staying at least a minimum of 4 days as their is a lot to see of interest. Lots of charity shops too!!
For families do visit Colchester Zoo which is a great day out, this can be reached by bus also if you do not drive.

Great weekend destination. Loads of big and little shops, cafes, restaurants and craft ales bars. Great atmosphere in town. On top of this the most amazing castle and wobbly medieval houses and Roman walls something for everyone!!
Town centre easy to walk round and explore and topped off with a fabulous meal at China Chef!

Colchester is a gem.
Colchester is a gem. Lovely architecture and sights, good cafes and pubs, shopping and eateries. It's not at all dog friendly, though, which is a big drawback if you ask me. Come on, Colchester, Britain loves its pets!

Colchester castle was a good part it was interesting to see Colchester's history. The castle Park is a great place to go and sit and relax take a picnic and have a stroll around. I only stayed for 2 nights but would of liked to stay longer to take a proper look around
As a base, the Brook Red Lion is perfunctory in that it provides you with a warm room with a bed, bath, wardrobe facilities, and television. The staff at the hotel try their very best to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Peter, in particular, was especially helpful, by allowing me to transfer to another, more appropriate room upon my arrival at the hotel. The lady on reception, who I think may have been the manager, was also extremely helpful, by printing out my itinerary and tickets for my ongoing trip before my check out.
I last stayed at the hotel approx., 15 years ago and the room had changed little over that time. There was also a lot of building works going on. Looked like an extension, possibly to the dining room. I guess that was the reason why the dining room was closed. Instead, you could eat in the bar area where there were (possibly) 10 small tables with 1 to 2 covers. Lacked ambiance and the menu was obviously limited but my meal was OK. Wanted a cheap stay whilst travelling so this fitted the bill.
Beautiful house with lots of old character and interest. Everywhere is filled with lovely objects and art. We felt very much at home. Even a friendly cat to sit with in the living room. Extremely comfortable bed, good sized room and cosy central heating. Host and staff were very welcoming and made the visit a joy. Hugely preferable over a generic hotel room. Excellent shower and bathroom facilities. Very central to Colchester Town centre and places of interest.
Absolutely loved the hotel and the facilities and the completely set up of everything. The staff at the hotel was lovely and courteous.
Reccomend this place highly for anyone who wants to visit Colchester and be comfortable in their stay.
Great place. Lovely location, at the heart of the city. Very convenient access to the city, all its facilities and the town. 5 stars all the way.
Thank you so much. We will be back again soon.
Please keep up your standards.
The hotel is located in the centre of Colchester and is convenient for touristy things as well as shops/restaurants/bars etc. The rooms are comfortable, clean and to a good standard. The check-in staff were friendly and everything worked smoothly with our booking. The food in the restaurant was first-class and very reasonably priced. I don't usually like restaurants in hotels, but this was excellent.
Cosy, comfortable hotel with period features within walking distance of the historic centre Colchester. Well appointed rooms. All the staff were welcoming and provided very good levels of customer service. Bar open in the evening. The breakfast was delicious. Car park on site was a little tight in places, but there was always a space available. Would definitely visit again.
Loved it . Staff friendly they went the extra mile to ensure we had a good stay .parking was clear and easy . Check in excellent very quick .. Breakfast was good freshly cooked . Position of hotel good for castle and shops . It was very quiet although our room was at the front .
Very clean we had a coffee maker and a kettle also fresh milk provided .
summer let for student accommodation. peaceful campus life, clean airy rooms. on site reception. pleasant walks, eg to wivenhoe or along the river into town. regular busses into town. colchester was more interesting than i realised. castle, churches, roman walls, parks and many interesting little streets with quirky shops and cafes.
MY WIFE AND i WERE ATTENDING A FUNERAL IN Colchester AND THE HOTEL AND ITS LOCATION WERE RECOMMENDED BY A FRIEND. We were delighted with the location and facilities at the hotel and Roland and the staff were extremely helpful. We would definitely recommend the hotel to other potential visitors.
Needs electric ports.
The food in the bar was expensive considering there are loads of places near. We would have eaten at hotel if was cheaper.
Bar didn't have a good choice of beer/larger and again expensive.
The bar/breakfast area the wood was dusty with spider webs just needs a vac
Well located boutique hotel in the centre of Colchester.
Lovely downstairs bar & restaurant.
Rooms are cosy, clean & comfortable with good shower.
Staff are welcoming and helpful.
Great freshly cooked breakfast.
Good value for money.
The staff were very helpful and friendly. Check in was very straightforward. The decor was very tasteful. The best hotel breakfast I think I’ve ever had. Made to order and had gluten free options too. Even had air on in the rooms!
Perfect location close to Colchester Town centre. Quiet at night.
Had adequate facilities. Very clean. Spacious living area with dining table. Would highly recommend and would book again.
It was in a quiet area with a bus stop quite near for Colchester town Center. Also some trailing paths half an hour away on foot. Perfect if you have a car as lots of parking around.
Location is superb, difficult to park in Colchester and think the overnight parking is slightly expensive. Otherwise couldn’t fault the hotel. Lovely rooms, very spacious
Nice size room, very clean, great shower & excellent breakfast included. The hotel is ideally situated at the top of Colchester High Street & next to the castle.
