The best inn I have ever stayed inn! It's a 1500s building and it is gorgeous and fascinating inside. So much to look at, lovingly and tastefully restored and preserved. See pics. Fantastic staff. I didn't use the pub / restaurant but it looked superb. I did have breakfast which was 10 out of 10, see pic. The location is in the heart of the historic old town, all the streets are narrow and quaint, I managed to find parking up the street, but the whole area wasn't designed for motor cars. Be aware that the many steep stairs are not suitable if you have mobility issues or heavy suitcases, so if that's you call them to discuss your options. See the pic of the paper they gave me to help me navigate the labyrinth! Overall the best historic property I have ever stayed in, and I have travelled a lot. Don't miss staying here!

There is a range of attractions to suit all tastes.
There is a range of attractions to suit all tastes. If you like history, there are self guided audio trails, museums devoted to the naval history and military signficance of the napoleonic and first and second world war. I came for the photographic opportunities, with massive container ships, sailing boats and the potential for glorious sunrises over the ocean. It does look a bit run down in places and I was a bit apprehensive, but everyone was very friendly, and I would sum it up as an unspoilt gem, from an earlier, more relaxed era.

Some lovely old buildings surrounded by industrial complexes. Every horizon you can’t avoid the super tank loading cranes and other industries.
If your a real ale fan, unfortunately there is very little. The Hanover burnt down so the owners opened a pop up beer shop near by. It was the only decent pint I could find. The Alma bar and rooms had an excellent atmosphere and food, but the beer is dreadful and expensive.

I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely Harwich was, there was lots of history in the old town and pretty little streets. There was not much in the way of restaurants or coffee shops but what was there was good. I ate at the Alma Inn.

During the summer months Harwich has a great deal to offer as it is by the sea, near a lovely beach which stretches to Dovercourt, and has a long maritime history. It has a new museum, upgraded cafes and park.

I had no idea until we spent some time there yesterday what an interesting and historic place Harwich is. Was particularly moved by the sculpture of the "kindertransport" children by the halfpenny pier (Jewish children sent by their parents from the NL to the UK to save them from the concentration camps). Would like to explore further.

The hotel room was, Okay, bed was hard, pillow hard, cupboards falling off, only 2 hangers, local uses of the bar were very rude and aggressive towards us, making our stay very uncomfortable. Hotel is in a built up street.
Property is exactly as pictured and very clean and cozy. Absolutely love the hotel-quality bedding and towels, made the stay feel so luxurious and great value for money. Although located at the port where there might not be as many activities, it is reasonably close to many attractions like Clacton Pier and Essex. Everyone in my family kept saying they would miss the place once we left and honestly we do! The games available also made the nights we spent more fun for us! Would love to stay again! Definitely highly recommend it!
Incredible staff! Everybody went above and beyond to help us and make us feel at home. I had asked for some dishwasher soap to wash my baby's bottles and the staff made sure that i had everything I needed to do it. Also, the breakfast was phenomenal. We chose this hotel because of its close proximity to the harwich harbour and it is indeed a 7 minute drive from there - plenty of time to eat breakfast at the hotel and drive there to be in time to catch the morning ferry
The house was beautifully decorated with some lovely period features, extremely clean & very well-appointed. It was also very well positioned, being just yards from the seafront and the rest of historic Harwich. Thanks must go to our host, who was extremely accommodating, even going as far as to ask how we wanted the bedrooms making up!
Because of the early leave of the ferry, we had the opportunity for an extra early breakfast. Which was really nice. Breakfast was good.
The room was beautiful with great details en everything was available to make you feel at home.
Jayne was a very nice lady and made us feel very welcome.
Position for Harwich excellent and easy parking. The room we had was really beautiful, much nicer than normal hotels. Staff were worried about my husband getting up stairs and could not have been more helpful. We are hoping to return to Harwich and certainly hope they have room for us.
Good location in quiet part of historic Harwich. Friendly staff checked us in even though we were early. Lovely characterful old pub with a welcoming atmosphere. Locally sourced food and seafood was delicious and well.priced.
Lovely cooked to order breakfast. Will certainly return
My stay at Driftwood cottage was excellent, great location and the old town of harwich was so historic. Lot's of lovely old pubs that all offer great food. The cottage was so cosy and we had the best sleep, would definitely recommend this place to friends and family.
Great choice when coming off the late Hook of Holland to Harwich crossing . Time to make last orders for dinner with a welcoming bar to boot. Free parking on site ; which makes a change .
Cracking breakfast a welcome sight after two week's of continental fare !
The room was very spacious and modern, the staff were very friendly, check out was 11 whereas others in the area had 10 am checkout and this allowed me more time to do the parkrun which is what I went to Harwich for and to have a shower afterwards
Amazing building, wonderful architecture and decor, rooms are hugely spacious and have a lot of character. The staff are very kind, friendly and the hotel is very convenient for Dovercourt & Harwich, Great value for money as well
The evening meal in the bar was good. Room was small but comfortable. Location is excellent for travel to the ferry port at Harwich. There was plenty of choices for the continental breakfast.
Hotel staff were all welcoming rooms were very clean and modern. There was a lot of choice in the restaurant and the food was amazing. Would definitely visit again.
Easy check in. Great location for early Harwich ferry. Fridge access to store food for journey. Free parking. Breakfast can be ordered if wanted. Spacious room.
Very cosy and warm. Lovely location as we were able to walk along the beach, plenty of places to visit and very interesting to learn more about Harwich.
