Machu Picchu was completely abandoned for nearly 400 years.
Machu Picchu was completely abandoned for nearly 400 years. There are no know written records of who built it, what it was used for or the part it played in Inca history. The guides are totally speculative. They have good stories..... but completely from their imagination. Do your homework and prepare for the visit.

It might seem almost heretical to not give MP top marks and to admit I planned too much time there, but it is really only the sanctuary that is worth the visit (for me). Had I been up to the mountain climb then another day would have been worth it. It is probably best to arrive the night before, get up early to visit in the morning, then leave after lunch.
Overall, I may have been slightly underwhelmed as it was a rubbish day, overcast and a bit drizzly so the views were less than ideal. Also even taking the bus up to the sanctuary there is still al lot of climbing and at that altitude...!
This is a really nice hotel. The facilities are very suave, and the rooms are comfortable and well decorated. The bathroom in our room had a Rain Shower and a large modern Soakworthy bathtub with lots of hot water. That might be just what you need after a lot of exercise on the mountainside.
The staff was super-friendly and they have a great system for checking luggage if you need to check out in the AM to go to Macchu Picchu. They gave numbered tags and held the bags in a secure storage area.
The location is very near the train station.
Arguably one of the best looking hotels in the area. The service was fantastic in many ways. We were met at the train station and guided to the hotel. We were able to store our luggage for the day whilst we went up Machu Picchu. And anything they could do to help they did. We had rooms 3 & 4 which had a brilliant view of the mountains around. The room was a lovely wooden feel. The breakfast was also great! It was a 3 courses including fruit, cereal & yoghurt and then eggs and bread along with a coffee.
The hotel is Spotless and new. Hotel is owned by a European and was built in 2019. It's simple but certainly up to US/European standards. Comfortable bed, great breakfast, staff was very helpful & friendly. It’s in a Quiet location. They offered a secure day storage. I was met at the train station with my name on a sign, which made it easy to find. Some reviews complain about hot water but if you let the faucet run for a few minutes, it’s plenty hot, the shower head and pressure are both great.
Carlos the owner was incredibly helpful. He met us from the train station and told us everything we needed to know about our trip to Machu Picchu. He got up early to cook us breakfast and looked after our bags whilst we were visiting Machu Picchu itself. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the best that we have slept in during our trip to Peru, and the hotel was warm and safe and had a nice bathroom with good water pressure.
This quaint historic hotel is very conveniently located close to the train station and just metres from the bus stop to Machu Picchu. The proprietor Ms Luz Gonzales is a very lovely and helpful lady — she arranged an excellent English-speaking tour guide for us for Machu Picchu (at short notice) and provided great tips about good restaurants nearby. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Highly recommend this hotel.
Extremely friendly staff who came to meet us at the train station, together with our guide for the following morning. The hotel provided a packed breakfast as we set off very early for Machu Picchu. The location is excellent, just by the train station and 1min from where the busses leave for Machu Picchu. All in all, a great place to spend the night in Aguas Calientes!
We arrived around 10 am and the hotel is located right there at the train station exit next to the river. Our room was ready when we got there. Front desk was friendly and the room was clean, beds were comfortable, water was hot and there are a few cafes and restaurants nearby. The night we spent there was also quiet even though there is a raging river below our room.
Nice, modern hotel which is much bigger than it first appears. Great location right in the centre of Machu Picchu Pueblo so dozens of restaurants and bars just outside the door. Also bus to the sanctuary was only about 100 yards away, although it is such a small town that everywhere is close.
Staff meeting at station to help with luggage is a great bonus.
view of the river from the balcony and shower.
staff were very helpful. They met us at the train station and walked us to the hotel. They made us a packed lunch as we were up before breakfast. They also looked after our bags whilst we visited Machu Picchu.
great location right next to the entrance to the hot springs
The hotel sent someone to meet me at the station what was great as I would never find without it, but a super plus was that I could leave my bag while visiting Machu Picchu, they were super kind to take it back to the station before my train
Breakfast was good and the room very comfortable
Great location and great staff. They were able to accommodate us in our stay especially as my girlfriend got sick and she had to stay behind at the hotel for the day. Breakfast was convenient and well crafted. And we had a nice view facing the river and the mountains so that was great.
Amazing hotel in the centre of Aguas calientes (Machu Picchu town). Very understanding, made us tea and completely run the extra mile.
Rooms very clean and perfect for one or two nights here.
We felt like having a small family around us during our stay. Thank you Juan!
The people were nice and prepared us a breakfast bag for our early departure to Machu Picchu. The hotel room was generally good. It was a pity that we arrived late and left early and didn't have the chance to enjoy the view outside the window.
Excellent location. For the train station to Cusco and the buses that go for Machupicchu. All within a minute of walking distance.
Well maintained hotel.
Everything is at your grip.
Free storage of luggages when you travel to Machupicchu.
Carlos is a great nice host, knows everything about Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu and his hotel is impeccable. Really value for money and you have the sense you are supporting a local guy who deserves it. Highly recommended.
The staff was very friendly, pleasant and helpful. The location of the hotel was very convenient, close to the trains station, restaurants and bus to Machu Picchu. There was a generous variety for breakfast.
It was clean, hot water and confortable bed. The girls at the reception were kind and helpful.
The hotel have money change and had the best rate we could find at aguas calientes.
The breakfast was good.
The staff was really friendly and the buffet breakfast was good. For a budget hotel, it was a good choice. They also stored our bags once we checked out. It has an amazing view on the top terrace!
Well located (but so are all hotels in Aguas Calientes). I'd say, a good choice in the city but it's probably not better or worse than any other hotels around there.
