A true jungle experience in a calm secure, laidback and amazing environment! Amazing little restaurants, beautiful beaches ! Much prefer this Caribbean Coast than the Pacific. Just rent a bike to move around or take a Tuktuk. Fruit markets on the roadsides!

Clearly a place for a younger crowd than us 70+ year olds but that didn't get in the way for us. Always treated well. Great to have such an international mix of people. Great food options, again with a mix of cuisines. With modest efforts you can arrange individualized itineraries for the sights. Infrastructure (local transportation, streets/roads, sidewalks) could benefit from updating - always a challenge in crowded, somewhat remote areas.

Charming Caribbean town, friendly
Charming Caribbean town, friendly
people, fun restaurant and entertainment options However, all gringo eateries are vastly overpriced. Avoid all the fancy places, totally not worth it. Exorbitant prices for nothing special. Opt for the few, but better, luncheonettes instead. Beer, not wine.
Loved Riquisimo! Be aware that different taxis charge different rates for the same trip, because they can haha! Chill! ;-)

This location is crowded with lots of traffic.
This location is crowded with lots of traffic. There’s trash alongside the roads and it’s very noisy at night. You must get up early to find a spot on the beach and the waves can be very rough and unsuitable for swimming just about anywhere. It is also far more expensive than we had remembered compared to our last trip vs the Pacific side.
If you must go to Caribbean side of Costa Rica, stay closer to Punta UVA or Manzanilla away from the crowds.
Where to eat in Puerto Viejo: La Nena, Zaika, Lidia’s Place, Tambie Bros, and Pizzeria Pulcinella.

A great laid back type of caribbean seafront. Good bars and a hippy vibe.
Some decent supermarkets in town and on the road out to Manzanilla.
The bar in the Puerto Viejo Hotel on Friday night is a must.

I was in a horrible mood when I arrived here and didn’t like my accommodations but overall it’s a quaint little beach town on the caribbean. A lot of the food is pricey but you can find cheap stuff and there’s loads of beaches and things to do close by. A laid back island vibe overall with kind people.
Very good location, Puerto Viejo is a small town and Pagalù hostel was 2 minutes walk away from the bustle of the beach, restaurants and bars. There is a supermarket nearby which is great for buying food and drink for cooking. There were hot showers which are always nice no matter the climate. The kitchen is well equipped and very clean, there is a nice social space. Jared on the reception was very helpful and assisted with preparations for visiting the nearby Cahuita National Park.
Located about a 5 minute walk from the town center of Puerto Viejo, we loved coming back to the property and sitting outside in the beautiful garden. There are also two cats that live on property who warmed up to us very quickly.
We are learning Spanish so it was a relief to be greeted at the front desk in English. The tile work throughout the cabinas property is beautiful, and the outdoor showers were perfect after a day at the beach!
The hostel has a great atmosphere. Everyone was getting along well and having fun, the rooms were comfortable and had large lockers available, the bathroom was cleaned regularly, they gave a free towel. All of the staff were happy to help and answer questions about puerto viejo and Costa Rica in general.
It's not particularly close to the beach, but its worth staying here if you want to have a fun time.
Good location, little bit far from the city center, but walking distance. The Playa Negra beach is very close. Shop and a good restaurant is also nearby.
The staff was very nice and helpful.
The apartman was clean, spacious, nice and they have Netflix also.
We can use another very nice Hotel (Banana Azul) facilitis.
We enjoyed it very much. We saw more animals on the hotel grounds than in the national park. Good access to the beach. Very private. Comfortable rooms. Beautiful interior. The staff is always ready to help you. Special thanks to Masai and her family. Thank you for your hospitality and would love to come back again.
This was our first trip to Puerto Viejo and Cariblue exceeded our expectations! The resort is beautiful and the location is perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful. We loved the pool, food and the beach which is an easy walk.
If you have the option to add the breakfast, do it. It's amazing!
This was the best hotel we had in Costa Rica so far: the bedroom was big and very nicely decorated, bed were very confortable, the garden was amazing and the location great to spend a few days in Puerto Viejo. We really enjoyed it a lot and we would highly recommend a stay in Cabinas Tropical ;)
We loved the swimming pool and the apartment. It was all beautiful and clean, plus even though it was not a hotel we had daily room cleaning service.
In addition, the staff was very helpful and they recommended activities for us so that we could enjoy our time in Puerto Viejo.
Very nice hotel with great staff. They helped mail back my wallet to me in the US after I left it in a shuttle - so kind of them. Thank you Umami Hotel staff!!!
Location is walking distance to lots of restaurants and bars, also not far from the beach (we loved Playa Negra).
Very nice, newly established hotel right on the beach in between beautiful trees. There's significant wildlife in the garden with aguris, spider monkeys, humming birds etc. The staff is extremely kind and supportive. They make an extra mile to make your holiday the best.
Hotel Sunshine Caribe is the perfect place for a stay in Puerto viejo! Close to the beach and the centre, but also peaceful and with amazing facilities! The owners are lovely and make you feel at home! I'll be definitely coming back. Thank you for everything!
Everything! This was one of if not the best lodging experiences of my life. If visiting Costa Rica, highly recommend a couple of days in Puerto Viejo, the beaches are beautiful, and a stay at Colina Secreta is an amazing experience.
Nice hotel located in the jungle, with great private beach and restaurant.Walking distance to many nearby eating options and a 10 minute drive to Punta Uva, which is a must beach to visit in the area. Great swimming pools and spa.
The Beachfront property is a typical hostel with a nice, small pool, regular activities, bikes for hire etc. It's located just outside of Puerto Viejo so you get less noise from the town while still being within walking distance.
This is a lovely hotel with beautiful gardens and pool. It feels very peaceful despite being near the central bars and restaurants of Puerto Viejo. We had a relaxing one night stay, but could have easily stayed much longer!
Wonderful place: best location, friendly staff brings you a customized experience, delicious breakfast, comfortable room, beachfront, plenty full of animals, warm water beach with golden sand and a landscape place to walk.
