Esslingen is a small, medieval town just two S-Bahn or regional train stops from Stuttgart (less than 10 minutes). It's very central to many places you may want to visit in the state of Baden-Wuerttemburg. For me, it made the perfect "home base." The town is small, so quiet and not overly touristy, but big enough to keep you busy wandering the streets of the old town, shopping, eating, and hiking up into the vineyards for a couple of days. Very historic feel with lots of photogenic old buildings and cobblestone streets. Excellent Swabian restaurants as well as a good mix of international cuisines. The opportunities to taste wine and walk in the vineyards and up to the Burg (fort) were an added bonus.

Esslingen is a historic town southeast of Stuttgart.
Esslingen is a historic town southeast of Stuttgart. It has a very lovely downtown area, and reasonable shopping. It is served by the S banh surface train that goes to Stuttgart in 20 minutes or so. It is next to where the Mercedes-Benz factory is located. From Esslingen you can take short trips to many other nice historical locations. Driving a car is a must but Germany is one of the best countries to drive I know.AAnonymous - 10Scored 10

We have been to Esslingen from Stuttgart for the mediaeval...
We have been to Esslingen from Stuttgart for the mediaeval Christmas market. We wanted to see it during May so went for4 days. Esslingen is a beautiful town. Many small streets with great building, so impressive postcard looking. You can wander to the market square so many different ways. Lovely restaurants and coffee and cake places to eat and chat. When we go to Stuttgart Christmas market again we will stay in Esslingen and travel to Stuttgart from there.

Lovely old town, really pretty .
Lovely old town, really pretty . Lady in tourist office really helpful and informative. There is a bus that goes to the airport cheaper than the train and with no changes. Sunday is really quiet there with shops closed. Plenty of places to eat and drink.SianUnited Kingdom
