The only positive thing you can say about Castle Douglas is that it is a convenient place from which you can travel and explore Dumfries and Galloway.
I spent one day watching the red kites feeding at Bellymack Hill Farm, and the day I left I took the opportunity to travel to the Mull of Galloway because I was relatively close to it.
Don't plan to stay in Castle Douglas in order to explore the town itself, there is nothing to see.

A lovely little town with plenty of shops which appealed to the wife. The natives were friendly and we enjoyed the banter. For the fellows don't miss the brewery at the bottom of town, Great tap, some great beers. Came home within lots of meat from each of the butchers shops.

Castle Douglas is a favourite place where we spend some time on any trip which demands a stop off to take advantage of the independent retail stores. We know staff are friendly and cheerful, don't hassle customers and always give a warm welcome.
After some shopping there is quite a number of places to stop for coffee and cake or even a more substantial meal.

Threave Gardens were lovely. We spent about 3 hours there and went round the house. Very interesting. Lots of lovely restaurants in Castle Douglas. The King's Arms and Carlos Italian were very good

Castle Douglas is a very nice little town, with many nice old shops. A great place for a day away.
The town is very clean and the people are friendly
It is in the right location for travelling around SW Scotland and seeing what is there
We liked everything! Emma and her team were delightful, and extremely welcoming. Emma was very helpful, as their own restaurant was fully booked for dinner she happily recommended a local restaurant and proceeded to book it for us. Our room was spotless and the bed super comfortable. Our breakfast was very tasty and served with cheery smiles from the lovely ladies who served us. We would strongly recommend a visit, The Market Inn will not disappoint. Castle Douglas is a lovely little town with lots of visitor attractions on the doorstep.
We all loved the location, it was really secure for our dogs too who could run around outside to their hearts content. We saw deer, red kites flying and pheasants (the dogs were really confused by them). The hosts were brilliant, we had really unseasonable warm weather for March in Scotland and they brought out the garden furniture for us and offered to bring out the barbecue too, nothing was too much bother. It’s close to Castle Douglas too, with plenty of places to go within easy reach in the car.
The location in the farmland was beautiful. Walks in the green fields with many sheep and cows. The accommodation was comfortable, good bed, quiet, sunny sitting room looking out over the hills. Walks on the coast are easily accessible and there are a number of good restaurants in Castle Douglas. We appreciated the hospitality of Irene, who was taking care of the guests.
- the staff were fantastic and obviously care about the community and visitors. locals in the pubs below were great people to talk to as well. breakfast was accommodating and delicious. we all really enjoyed our time in Castle Douglas. Rooms aren’t exactly modern, but I don’t think that should be a problem for anyone, accommodations are more than adequate.
Stunning location on the edge of Galloway Forest Park, with incredible wildlife to be seen just in the garden (countless birds, rabbits, even a fox!). Great base for exploring the surrounding hills, coastline and towns. Rachael and Matt were super friendly and gave us a little tour of the area around the house when we arrived. Would love to go back!
We had a wonderful welcome from Gillian and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in her spacious, comfortable, all-amenities flat. Location was also perfect for everything the town had to offer, especially Gillian's InHouse cafe and chocolate factory downstairs.
Friendly, helpful owner. Well maintained, nice room and en-suite. Breakfast room was lovely, excellent breakfast. Although I know the area quite well, this was my first stay in Castle Douglas which I really enjoyed.
Made to feel inferior by waitress who said our room option meant we could not choose from residents breakfast menu despite my argument that, like everyone around us in the restaurant, we are still hotel residents!!
Exceptionally clean and warm accommodation, with very welcoming hosts. lovely wee finishing touches in the room and a great breakfast. we will definitely book again next time in Castle Douglas.
The Coop is very well located within Castle Douglas close to local amenities and restaurants. It is cosy, stylish and clean. Great communication from the owner. We had a really lovely stay.
Parking available near flat. Large kitchen. Great enclosed garden for the dog. Central location for travelling to beach, tourist areas, and lots of cafes/restaurants in Castle Douglas.
Good breakfast, location poor. Advertised as Castle Douglas and it isn't it is in Crossmichael which was disappointing as we specifically wanted to stay in Castle Douglas.
Been to this flat many times, it’s right on the Main Street in Castle Douglas. The flat is warm and cosy with comfy beds and furniture. The flat is clean and tidy.
