Portsmouth is a fun city : lots to do and see nearby also.
Portsmouth is a fun city : lots to do and see nearby also. We enjoyed a movie at the cool music hall , and drove to nearby kittery outlets. We had a lovely late lunch at wentworth by the sea. Great breakfast at friendly toast and we signed up for a time before we went so skipped the wait outside. Lots of arty stores and a good bookstore too.
Enjoy!

We love the character of Portsmouth.
We love the character of Portsmouth. It's charming without being stuffy, and has a vibrant, funky feel downtown with some good restaurants. It's also very walkable, even when the conditions are a little challenging. Just be sure to check the weather for your trip and bring appropriate clothing and footwear. If you are in town, don't miss Caffe Kilim for great coffee, bakery and snack items. Also, grab a meal at The Green Elephant for some of the best vegetarian Thai food you will find in New England.

Lots of great cafes, restaurants, and shops.
Lots of great cafes, restaurants, and shops. We love going around Christmas to see the huge tree lit up for the season and all the other decor the shops do. Gaslight has some of the best pizza, Maison Navarre has great macarons, Diversions has tons of board games, Popovers has great coffee, lunch and pastries - the list goes on. There are wine bars and places for beer, too, and even ice skating at Puddle Duck Pond. I could easily spend a week here at a time. Just be prepared for cold temperatures if you visit in winter, I imagine summer is their more popular time. Convenient parking at Hanover Garage or your hotel.

The historic downtown shops are fun to visit.
The historic downtown shops are fun to visit. We went for the holiday lights. Portsmouth is a great central location to visit other nearby towns and activities. It's only a ten minute ride to Water Country from downtown.
The location is excellent and easy to get too. Restaurants a block or two walk away. Ample parking at the back of the hotel. An old converted house. Has a lift! Large room, should have a King Sized bed (Queen Ok). One arm chair and has a small desk. Small bathroom with sink adjacent. Walk-in shower a bonus! Basic, continental breakfast but good quality. Great staff. A bit noisey with loud footed guests above, but no street noise. Lovely sitting rooms for quiet time.
Beautiful hotel right in the center of downtown near shopping. We had a one bedroom king suite which was more like an efficiency apartment. Totally worth it for the extra $20. The free breakfast was good. I like that the indoor pool opened at 6am. Very close to restaurants and pubs. The burger next to the hotel was great. Good martinis.
Great location, you park the car and can walk anywhere in downtown Portsmouth. The Inn is immaculate and the room was nicely appointed with NE charm. A short drive to the beaches in both Maine and NH. We will definitely be back. A very nice breakfast was included in the price.
The hotel was very responsive, and supplied plenty of information for us to understand check-in procedures. We also asked Aidan at the reception desk for some help and recommendations, and he was extremely helpful and polite. We were absolutely delighted with the Ale House Inn!
Big comfy bed, spacious room and a few handy extras I needed to make use of (kettle, iron etc.)
Staff were nice and there was a (small) fitness centre with running machines and a cross trainer. There was a little diner very close to the hotel that was good.
A lovely boutique hotel, situated just a couple of streets away from the shops and cafes of Portsmouth. Beautifully decorated, comfortable bed. A warm welcome. Hot and cold drinks and snacks available in the foyer.
Loved the facilities as this was our first time. Absolutely loved that. It was so centralized to everything around us so that we could walk and not drive. We just fell in love with the entire Portsmouth Area!
