We loved our stay at Cabañas Aldea! The smaller cabin was already taken during the dates we wanted to book so we ended up booking the larger two bedroom cabin and we loved it! We felt so cozy and comfortable there. It was so quiet and a perfect place to rest after our days exploring Calakmul and the surrounding ruins. I highly recommend it as a place to stay when visiting this region!

The staff were very kind and helpful. Breakfast in the morning is in a comfotlrtable palapa in an intimate setting, and was excellent. There is an undiscovered Mayan mound from the Becan Archaeological Site in the garden just south of the palapa.
Hostal Otoch Beek is located in Becan, 63 mi from Calakmul archaeological site and 5 mi from Xpujil, the main town. Otoch Béek Calakmul features air-conditioned rooms and free private parking.

Great location near Xpujil and Calakmul. Nice garden with friendly host.
It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.
It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.
But you need to be up for a "half horse" town.
To get to a basic restaurant we walked through the middle of roadworks.
Most roads giving access to the hotel were closed for road works and of course there are no diversions..you just work it out!
But the archaeology is fabulous though to get to Calakmul was a 3 hour drive each way .

Beautiful site right off the road.
Beautiful site right off the road. Walk to the Mirador Maya Hotel. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and as of September, 2023, you can climb everything. There's no pyramid, but the main structure is very tall and impressive. Bring bug spray. The mosquitoes are pretty intense.

Xpujil itself is not worth visiting.
Xpujil itself is not worth visiting. It is a good town to stay if you are travelling trough the area (for example when visiting Calakmul) and need a place to sleep. There is a small supermarket and a nice pizza restaurant. Be aware that there are only two banks and their ATM's at the time of our visit both of them did not have any money in them for two days.

Xpujil is located more or less at the center of the Calakmul...
Xpujil is located more or less at the center of the Calakmul municipality (which is large). Although this little town is not particularly oriented towards tourism, it is the best location to stay connected & have all services within easy reach so you can move between main sites and attractions around the Calakmul area.
Near Xpujil you will find from four to six striking archaeological sites and all of them are worth the visit. Of course, the most impressive one is Calakmul but there is plenty to do beyond that outstanding stop. For instance, you can ask a cab to take you to "Ejido 20 de Noviembre" and visit plenty of craft workshops (wood carving, embroidery by hand and by machine among others). I really enjoyed my visit to Hilos de Vida, Amanecer de Rio Bec & Artesanos Sabios since they give you a nice explanation on their crafts and sometimes they even offer a class for you to take (they also can get you a guide if you need translation aid).
Whether you are traveling with family, couple or by yourself, I really recommend to book no less than two nights in Casa Ka'an (about 8 to 10 minutes by car near Xpujil), 'cause they have everything you expect and a little bit more in a really cute jungle lodge composed by very independent villas which happen to be surrounded by the most wonderful environment. Needless to say that a chat with the manager (Nicolás) is always enlightening so if you catch him ask for his views on the area.
Last but no least... you will boost your experience in the region if you move around in a 4WD or even better in your own bike.

Not a lot of options for housing around the Calakmul...
Not a lot of options for housing around the Calakmul Biosphere. None are really close and you need a vehicle to get to the main part of the park. Xpujil, is little neighborhood town, not too close to ruins or highway. We enjoyed walking around town and looking at birds and the old frame houses.

Our only reason for staying in Xpujil was to visit Calakmul.
Our only reason for staying in Xpujil was to visit Calakmul. But as it turns out, it is not the closest lodging to go to the ruins. Conhuas is nearer and has a few hotels that would have worked better for our itinerary, since we were going west. The town of Xpujil has very little of interest and the meal we had was one of the least successful of our trip. We ate dinner at Sazon Veracruzana, sitting right on the dusty noisy main road (186) that runs through the town. It had the more favorable reviews in LP. Calakmul was a great experience though!
It is not too far from Calakmul reserve, but not close either. Sweet little town. Hotel/hostel a little on the unkempt side but was fine for three days. Large room, AC and hot water both worked fine. Did not use pool because it was cool. A few interesting birds come through the gardens. The food is adequate while not great. Balthasar, the owner, is a nice guy and tries to serve with cheerfulness. He hooked us up with a good guide for seeing the ruins and birds at Calakmul.
Moises was very kind and helpful, and always ready to assist via text. The insect sounds at night are beautiful. Everything was exceptionally clean and professional in the details. Nice big property with lots of trees. Appreciated the fruit, snacks and drinks. The air plants on the property were beautiful. We slept very well. It was such a nice place to come back to relax in after long days spent exploring ruins.
guy there with some English was really helpful, they can arrange a driver for you to go the Calakmul ruins, our driver also took us on a short jungle walk and then on the wat back to see the bats emerging from their cave at dusk, which was spectacular(all for a little extra money of course!), it's in the pizzeria, which is a couple of minutes from the bus stop, and does a pretty decent pizza too.
The property is a rural hotel in a village lost in the middle of a tropical forest. There were some imperfections, but overall the standard was high given the circumstances. The room was clean, dry, airy, and had a working AC. The wifi connection was quite good too. There is a hotel restaurant serving simple and good meals. All the staff was very friendly and nice to talk to (in Spanish).
We arrived late at night in Xpujil with the intention of visiting Calakmul the following day. In the morning, there were no more cars available to rent, so the receptionist found us a friend of his who took us there and saved the day! :) this was very helpful.
I recommend this hotel if you are planning to visit the ancient ruins in the region!
Nice bungalow close to the center of Xpujil. We really enjoyed our stay. The bungalow has everything you need (even coffee) and the host is very nice and helpful.
Good communication in advance and also during our stay. He is always happy to help and can provide you with recommendations for restaurants or the trip to Calakmul.
Location was perfect if you are looking to visit the breathtaking ruins of Calakmul. These are beautiful and super clean small cabins in the middle of the jungle. The staff was super nice. They even have a small restaurant on site with great food!
This Hotel is by far the best you will find in the area, Staff speaks English, the little bungalows are just right, have everything you will need. It's clean and quiet. They offer lots of food, Mexican but also pastas and other things.
location, best in Xpujil a bit down the highway so no noise, very new so very comfortable with perfect showers, quiet, perfect mattresses and even a coffee for the morning. a perfect stop to or from the Calakmul temples. gracias !!
Nice hotel and nice rooms. Clean. Great breakfast. Nice staff. Pool. The property is still being developed into a plaza with restaurants and stores, so in the future, I think it will be a really fun place to stay.
The place is friendly and confortable enough in regard of the price. We have almost the feeling of being in forest while actually very near Xpujil town center. Excellent compromise.
private parking in the hotel, location close to the Calakmul reservation where we were heading, they didn't have a problem with our early morning check-out (before 6am)
so peaceful and relaxing. waking up to the sounding the birds. beautiful hiking trail on the property. we hiked to the archaeological ruins!!!! very nice people.
