Pongwe is an isolated beach, at low tide the sea is very far away and, even at high tide, it is very shallow - you cannot swim. Kiwengwa beach, next door (10 minutes by car) is much better, more lively, with many shops and good hotels.

There is not much to do in the local area other than visit other hotel resorts. We did visit a local school to make a donation and I would advise bringing something with you to donate e.g notebooks, sweets, money

Small remote holiday village with the white sand beach but not having good beach maintenance (seaweed, some dirt on the beach). Little bit far from anything in Zanzibar (far from Stone city and airport, far from spectacular Nungwi and Paje beach). No bars, restaurants, shops and infrastructure outside the holiday resort due to remote location and low density of tourists.

At first sight you can say....what to do here ?....no shops, just some local fruits selling points, no crowded areas, less traffic than anywhere but more nature than anywhere around. It's exactly the opposite comparing with Paje. If you need a quiet, family friendly, uncrowded spot.....ask for Pongwe. And if you want to understand why I'm saying these....just go on Pongwe beach when low tide is there.

I did not visit Pongwe town.
I did not visit Pongwe town. I stayed in a luxury boutique hotel north of the town as I like a quiet holiday. The only problem was the tide leaving an unattractive expanse of muddy rocks. The hotel's pontoon helped with access to the sea when the tide was high.

The accommodation and restaurant in Weavers Lodge was outstanding and the beach was idyllic. The tide tends to be out until about 3pm (July/Aug stay) and there are some sharp rocks - if your feet are particularly fragile, water shoes are a good idea. We cycled to the next village - an enjoyable afternoon trip. Very friendly locals.
I have stayed at 4 different resorts in Zanzibar and this was by far the best resort. The rooms were clean, the food was delicious and most importantly the staff was great. I stayed there with my wife and baby and everyone was always helpful . A big thank you to Ahmed and the other waiters in the restaurant, it was a pleasure. Also, a big thank you to Adela the manager for making our stay very enjoyable. I would strongly recommend this resort to anyone looking to relax in Zanzibar.
Don't hesitate to book this hotel wether you are a couple or travelling with children... If you like to be somewhere: that is more authentic than fancy, where you can walk and be barefoot on the whole property, where you are surrounded by a team that is kind and modest - clearly trying to give you the best experience possible. The room exceeded our expectations, way better than the photos would suggest. The new restaurant & bar: "The Club" is magical. Hope to be back soon.
Out stay at Pongwe Lodge was amazing. Such a well thought out space, absolutely stunning. Everything about the place was faultless. Our room was superb with a view to die for. The food was top quality but the best thing about the Lodge was the staff. They could not be more helpful and everything that they did, they did with a smile on their faces. I could not recommend the Lodge highly enough. We will definitely return!
Excellent location for quiet vacations. The tide change the view all the time. The villas are spacious, well equipped and modern designed.
The sea view villas gives you the privacy that you want.
The food was excellent , the chef overcome our expectations.
Service was really good. The free massage in spa was very nice and the girls really polite.
We didn't want to go out of the hotel area because it was perfect.
Everything was perfect. The Hotel and its facilities are amazing. The room was perfect. The staff were absolutely wonderful! We informed them that we were visiting Zanzibar on our honeymoon and they made sure that we had a memorable stay with them. From the room decorations, to the delicious food and great hospitality of the staff; everything was perfect. Special thanks to Chef Mubarak, Janeth and Esta :)
Everything! The property is a hidden gem in Zanzibar! The staff are so welcoming and pays attention to detail in way that cannot be described, you just have to experience it. We absolutely loved that in this case Instagram is reality. At Karibu Beach Resort you are steps away from the beach, rich culture, excursions, amazing disappearing sandbanks, and inviting locals.
Tulia Zanzibar is truly a unique resort. Every aspect of the property is of utmost quality, the bungalows are spacious and extremely well appointed. There are only 16 rooms which makes it intimate and relaxing. The food is delicious, and most of all the team is super friendly, professional and will go over and beyond to make sure you spend an amazing time.
Ester at the front desk and Ally the manager made a real effort to make our stay as wonderful as possible. Food was excellent, great spa, nightly entertainment and one evening they served an amazing dinner with lobster and shrimp right on the beach. nice pool, beautiful beach. We were close enough to do a day trip to Stone Town and to the Spice Village
Beautiful small Boutique Hotel with outstanding service. I felt extremly welcome and appreciated. The food was lovingly prepared and fresh.
Friendly staff who went above and beyond to make my stay a memorable one. The Villa was beautiful and spacious.
A clean and well kept little gem. Thank you so much for a beautiful stay!
We had a very warm welcome from the staff and everybody was very polite. The rooms were very nice and clean. The resort is beautifuly arranged and decorated. The pool is very good. Beach is right there, but be aware of tides on Zanzibar. Breakfast was very tasty and they offer multiple breakfast options.
Staff was amazing, friendly and really nice. The area of the hotel is beautiful, romantic. It is a smaller hotel, but it was nice to have only 'few' people there. Everything was clean, and bare foot is recommend all around the place. :) Food was delicious, and cocktails were tasty.
The Pongwe hotel is an excellent place for those who are searching for quiet, relaxing and refined holidays. It is perfect for couples and families with children. People at Pongwe are extremely kind, receptive and caring. It was a pleasure to stay at this place.
Fronts onto a beautiful beach.
Nice Swimming pool.
Very quiet except from 6.30am to 7am in the morning.
Grounds are attractive and nicely landscaped.
Easy to book day trips from hotel.
Rooms were serviced daily and sprayed for mosquitoes.
We stayed at the hotel for a week. Very beautiful little hotel. Newly renovated. Spotless clean. Nice and quiet. Staff very attentative and kind. Delicious breakfast. Great cocktails. We got free upgrade the two last days.
Very friendly staff and good food. Pool was a good alternative considering the sea was rocky and affected by low/high tide. Resort was clean and well shaded area with palm trees and beach baby.
A hotel with nice layout. You can see very well the low/high tide difference and it is beautiful. Nice and big pool. The staff at the restaurant - always smiling, made you feel also happy.
