About Port Macquarie

Including tips for the best time to visit Port Macquarie

Not quite halfway between Sydney and Brisbane on New South Wales' sunny coast, Port Macquarie is a quieter but nonetheless scenic destination for holidays full of swimming, relaxing and exploring native flora and fauna.

One of Port Macquarie's biggest draws is its local beaches. Town Beach is the most central, with easy access to facilities and nearby restaurants. Surfers love Flynn's Beach for its strong waves and surf club, while families come to swim and picnic. Shelly Beach is especially picturesque, bordered by a rainforest and featuring a tidal lagoon.

Nature lovers will find plenty to do in Port Macquarie. The Coastal Walk passes some of the town's most picturesque lookouts and attractions, including the 19th-century Tacking Point Lighthouse. Along the route, keep your eyes peeled for wallabies, goanna and whales during migration season. The Sea Acres Rainforest Centre features even more chances to spot regional plants and animals. Port Macquarie's large koala population can be seen at the family-owned Billabong Zoo Koala & Wildlife Park as well as the Koala Hospital, which focuses on species rehabilitation.

Port Macquarie wasn't always the holiday destination it is today: the town started as a penal colony in 1821. You can still visit the Trial Bay Gaol jail, which sits on a cliff edge and was built by convicts. The Port Macquarie Historical Museum is another convict-built structure where you can learn about the town's history through costumes and relics.

The MANTRA was in a very good position for easy walking both down to the quayside and up to Coles and Dan Murphy's/Liquorland. Restaurants were varied and great food. Westpoint just up the road which is an excellent Club. Port Macquarie is a lovely seaside town to visit. Vineyards all within easy range.

We love Port Macquarie because our family members live there.

September 20, 2022

We love Port Macquarie because our family members live there. We love the bush and the koalas at their home at Lighthouse Beach. We like the area because it is away from the bustle of Sydney and it is clean and quiet. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Blue Whale restaurant and we would recommend it to anyone who loves Thai food. We have been there before and will return.

Loved the views.

September 18, 2022

Loved the views. Great walks along the foreshore & marina. Plenty of nice cafes, hotels & restaurants to eat. Good amenities for a coastal town. However would be very busy in the summer months. We went in Spring which wasn’t as crowded but temperature was still between 22-27 degrees so could still enjoy the sunny warm weather. Thai restaurant at Northpoint had great Thai & reasonably priced. Chop n Chill restaurant good too.

The host Ben was terrific.

The host Ben was terrific. Gave a full run down of the property and was very engaging with all guests. As a seasoned traveller himself he gave invaluable insights as to what you can do around Port Macquarie and further afield, in particular as to where you may6br heading next. Book of suggestions available for guests to read. Highly recommended

Lovely town with a variety of things to do both when it was raining and when it wasn’t! I’d recommend a visit to the Koala Hospital, as well as a walk along the pier. We ordered from the Blue Water Bar & Restaurant and would recommend them.
