About Antwerp

Including tips for the best time to visit Antwerp

Brussels may be Belgium's capital, but Antwerp offers just as much in the way of Belgian heritage and culture. Its centuries-old history as a European port continues to this day, where life centres around the Scheldt River and the diamond trade is still strong.

Antwerp first reached its heyday during the 16th century, when the Renaissance ushered in a new wave of creativity and art. You'll find masterpieces by baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens, one of the city's most famous residents, hanging inside the UNESCO-listed Cathedral of Our Lady as well as at Rubenshuis – the artist's former home and workshop. Grote Markt, Antwerp's main square in its medieval centre, offers an atmospheric glimpse of the city's architectural heritage with its Renaissance-style City Hall, Guild Halls and Brabo Fountain.

Modern Antwerp is now a hub for high fashion and nightly entertainment. Fanning out from Antwerpen-Centraal railway station, the streets of Meir and De Keyserlei are famously lined with boutiques selling cutting-edge designs. Meanwhile, the nearby diamond district has been the place to find rough and polished stones since the 15th century.

Sitting down at a local bistro for Flemish food and Belgian beer is a classic Antwerp experience, but there's more to city life than its cuisine. After a lesson in printing presses at the Museum Plantin-Moretus, catch a sports match at Lotto Arena, witness a concert at Sportpaleis Antwerpen or visit the animals in the Antwerp Zoo – one of the oldest in the world.

My favourite part was wandering around the cathedral - inside and outside. Restaurant Pelgrimhuis beside our hotel was amazing!! House of waffles was also gorgeous! The tourist info office is in a castle which was beautiful!

we had three days, two nights and really loved Antwerp. The old part of the city is beautiful - the cathedral and churches (and speaking as an atheist), the squares and public buildings, bars, cafes and restaurants. we loved it. We booked an app-driven scavenger hunt (solve clues) and walked around the main attractions at our own pace. We enjoying lingering here and there, or stopping for a glass of wine and a snack. The chocolate museum was also really interesting We'll go back with family for sure - our kids love exploring

Easy to get around, traffic kept to a minimum so quiet and allowed free walking. I enjoyed walking by the river and exploring the museums and art galleries, in particular the Museum Mayer van den Burgh. I was disapppiinted that the Rubenshuis was closed. MAS was very difficult to find.

Antwerp is one of the most beautiful cities I've been to . Lots going on and people very accommodating. Food scene is ridiculously good and the canal pop ups. Rent a bike or scooter so you don't miss anything.

Small town with good shopping, a beatiful Kathedral and good food. We spent a lot of time walking, eating in small cafes and exploring Belgian waffels, fries and chocolates. Since it is a small time, you can really walk from one destination to another within 30 minutes. We used Antwerp as our base and travelled to Ghent one day, then Brussels, the next day and Bruges the 3rd day. Each day we returned back to Antwerp.

We have travelled quite extensively in europe, on this trip we visited Liege, before several places in Germany. Liege was a very 'grey' place, not very exciting, less friendly people as it was predominantly French speaking. Whereas Antwwerp being in the north is predominantly dutch speaking locas with plenty of englsih speaking too. Plus Antwerp is very modern in the south part of the city, but quaint and lots to see in the city centre. I would recommend 2 days to get a good feel for the place.
