About Florianópolis

Including tips for the best time to visit Florianópolis

Located on the South Brazilian coast, Florianópolis is a vibrant seaside city that spreads out to the connected Santa Catarina Island. Here in the sprawling capital of Brazil’s Santa Catarina state, you’ll discover a rich culture, excellent seafood and sun-baked beaches.

Florianópolis is filled with cultural treasures. The Santa Catarina History Museum (MHSC) stands out with a stunning pink facade and is home to a range of regional antiques. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Florianópolis is another highlight, dating all the way back to 1675. Nowadays, it's a pastel-coloured spectacle with exterior steps that are perfect for resting after a long day of sightseeing.

Florianópolis is packed with plenty of things to see and do. For a snapshot of local life, check out the Florianópolis Public Market. Here under neoclassical arches, you’ll find lively bars and restaurants in addition to a wealth of shops. Afterwards, head on down to Praia Mole, a golden beach framed by rolling green hills and rocky capes. If you time it right, you might be able to catch some surfers riding waves to the shore.

Seafood is huge in Florianópolis. If you have time, head to Barra da Lagoa, a quaint fishing village. Eateries like Rancho de Canoa and Restaurante O Timoneiro serve the finest seafood with a Santa Catarina twist.

Florianópolis is not only an incredibly beautiful capital...

Florianópolis is not only an incredibly beautiful capital city but also very safe. The island of Santa Catarina has breathtaking beaches and mountains that make a unique landscape. It's also a well-developed city unlike most of the other cities in Brazil. Its people are warm and friendly, too. I loved Praia da Armação, for example, at the southern tip of the island, where the restaurants and bars are excellent! I guess I'll always want to go back to Florianópolis.

Great city, with great seafood.

Great city, with great seafood. Really worthy visiting for tech enthusiasts that like a more silicon valley vibe rather than NYC. I ate in the beaches north of the city where you can have fresh oysters, really recommend it. Avoid the transit, you can spend hours in a car if not careful.

Great city, its architecture has a mixture of historic places and modern buildings. Lots of beaches and lakes. Plus many mountains for hiking. People are friendly, and there is a wide variety of restaurants and cuisines. We love it!

Absolutely amazing island-city.

Absolutely amazing island-city. But I very strongly warn against going during high season. Road infrastructure is disastrous and public transport is poor and not an alternative as buses use the same roads...
