Leipzig City Center
In downtown
Leipzig’s centre brims with UNESCO-listed buildings. The Renaissance-style residences, baroque trading houses and “Wilhelmine” villas give it an eclectic look. Shop for big-brands on Grimmaische Strasse, stroll the Bachviertel to see its elegant villas, or buy chocolate pralines (a Leipzig speciality) at Café Kandler on Thomaskirchhof 11.

Südvorstadt
1.3 miles from downtown
Studenty Südvorstadt lies slightly south of the centre. It’s filled with local gastro pubs, breweries and more hip restaurants than you can shake a stick at – especially around Karl Liebknecht Strasse (or the “Karli” for short). Have brunch at Südbrause or check out Kneipencafe Orange for two of the best.

Plagwitz
1.9 miles from downtown
Plagwitz has a heavy dose of culture. The area is loaded with burlesque bars and hip hangouts that attract a young crowd. It also has its fair share of art galleries and museums. Check out the vintage cars on display at the Da Capo Oldtimermuseum, or the Klinger Villa Museum that contains works by German Symbolist painter Max Klinger.

Gohlis
1.6 miles from downtown
Proud and prosperous. This wealthy, quiet northern district brims with old churches and museums. The canary-coloured Schillerhaus is among its best museums, once home of the philosopher Fredrich Schiller. For the rest, shop at the Gohlis Centre Mall or try “Gose” beer at the famous Gosenschenke brewery on Menckestrasse 5.

It’s easy to see why Leipzig has been crowned the ‘New Berlin’. The coolest city of Germany’s Saxony state is more like a creative playground, packed with plenty of exciting things to do and see on holiday.
Leipzig is well known for its vibrant music scene. Here, visitors can discover a heritage of acclaimed composers and a future of genre-defying sounds. Check out the Bach-Museum to learn about the history of the famous maestro who, along with Mendelssohn and Wagner, helped put Leipzig on the musical map. Alternative music fans should visit the cultural centre of Conne Island, while techno-lovers can dance the night away at the iconic Distillery nightclub.
Leipzig is filled with plenty of eye-catching attractions that tell stories of an exciting past. The Leipzig Trade Fair dates all the way back to the Middle Ages and represents a proud, century-long history of trading. Elsewhere, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations celebrates the 1813 defeat of Napoleon's French army. Be sure to climb to the top of the pyramid-like shrine for panoramic views of the city.
Sitting at the meeting-point of the White Elster, Pleisse and Parthe rivers, Leipzig has plenty of green spaces sure to keep nature-lovers entertained. The Leipzig Riverside Forest is a must-see, and open since 1542, the Leipzig Botanical Garden features a massive 7,000 species of greenery.

Leipzig is a beautiful midsize town where everything is at a walking distance, at least in the downtown. It's full of historical buildings and above all it's where Bach and Mendelssohn lived and worked so it's a very musical place, with one of the finest orchestras in the world: the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Leipzig is a must for anyone who loves history or music.

Loved the architecture of the city and it was easy to find my way around. The Spinnereistraße area, Plagwitz area was also fantastic for creativity, independent shops etc. Grassi Museum and Fine Arts Museum both brilliant - I only had one day for museums, I could have done with a week!

A lovely and vibrant city - easy to get around. The hop-on hop off tour is always our first stop in any city and this one provided a great way to see and locate the main sights. The Battle of the Nations Monument is well worth hopping off the bus to see. The walking tour guide obtained in the Information Office identified all the main sights and was easy to follow on foot(ours was in English). Visit both main churches (St Thomas and St Nicholas). We were lucky to see a performance by St Thomas boys' choir - well worth queuing for if you get a chance. The museum in the Old Town Hall was terrific - well laid out (and in English as well as German)- don't miss the bit about the city since the end of WWll - astonishing. The main station (Hbf) is very impressive-if you like that sort of thing (some where to shop if you are pushed on a Sunday, as it has a huge underground shopping mall).Great shopping areas elsewhere. Lots of other cultural and historic things to do and see. All-in-all a gem of a place.

A superb compact city, easy to walk the old inner part, full of fascinating architecture, sad and uplifting history and resonating to the 27 year residence of Johann Sebastian Bach. What a great place - a young community full of students and passionate people.

August 3, 2023
The huge problem was with the train service into Leipzig from Luxembourg, to and from Zagan, Poland, and then on to Prague. Each train was delayed, overbooked or both. If you are driving or flying into Leipzig you may have better luck but we had 4 trains in/out, and each was a lousy experience. The city is worth exploring but transportation made it the most difficult part of our multi-city trip. None of this detracts from the Marriott, which was comfortable if a bit pricy.

Leipzig was very central location. We stayed there for 6 days and took the train to other nearby locations 30-60 minutes away. Berlin, Wittenburg, Eisenach, Erfurt were all easy train rides for day trips. There were lots of places to eat and good transportation using the tram and trains. Very reasonably priced accommodations too. Nice shopping district in a beautiful city. Highly Recommend eating at Auerbach's Keller and seeing the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. Warning, there are lots of steps at this one!
