About Stuttgart

Including tips for the best time to visit Stuttgart

Nestled in a valley on the banks of the Neckar river, Stuttgart is a forward-thinking city filled with glorious green spaces, religious relics and world-famous museums.

Stuttgart boasts plenty of monuments that celebrate its rich royal and religious history. The 18th-century baroque New Palace shines as the centrepiece of the iconic square Schlossplatz, while the Gothic St John’s Church towers over Feuersee lake with a classical grandeur. Elsewhere, the 10th-century Stiftskirche church hints at the city’s Roman heritage behind a mix of modern architectural features.

Car enthusiasts will find much to love in the capital of Germany’s Baden-Württemberg state. You can discover the history of iconic vehicles at the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum – buildings which look as futuristic as the cars themselves. The city seems to be always looking ahead, as signalled by the Stuttgart TV Tower, renowned as the world's first telecommunications tower.

Surrounded by hills and covered with parks, there are plenty of things to do outside here. Wilhelma Zoo and Botanical Gardens and Rosenstein Park are definite highlights, and you can even follow the Neckar river to the nearby Black Forest for some picturesque landscapes. On your return, make sure you stop by a local wine tavern to sample the fruits of the vine-clad hills.

Stuttgart Airport is located south of the city, about 13 kilometres from the centre.

Fabulous staff, in a brilliant location right in the heart of city with shopping, restaurants and attractions right at your doorstep. The rooms were super large with shower, bath and complimentary water.

Exactly what you would expect from a rich south German city.

June 28, 2022

Exactly what you would expect from a rich south German city. No spectacular architecture but a nice clean city centre with museums (Mercedes and Porsche, for example) and a large clean orderly park. Clean and pleasant but the building works on Stuttgart 21 are still going on after more than a decade rather mess things up around what will eventually be a lovely city centre.

I was only there for an overnight break to a longer journey, but from the information I found online and at the hotel there seems a lot to see and I wish I could have stayed longer. Hotel Unger was really good value and I would certainly stay there again.

March 3, 2022

We came to Stuttgart for the Mercedes and Porsche museums and these were just what we expected. They are also enough different to enjoy both of them. We had the order Mercedes - Porsche, two very different concepts. The Staatsgallerie was a top-class place for paintings. It is a great city for shopping, and the Brauhaus type restaurants in the city centre are great. But after two days wearing masks, you are fed up with covid - checks for G3 or G2 were done in painstaking detail. Several points of interest were closed, such as cafés in some places, the outside terras of the library. Guidelines for elevators were stupid e.g. one person only...

Really only stopped over in the city for the Mercedes-benz museum and Porsche museum, which were phenomenal. I heard the Staatsgallerie is nice but I didn't have time to visit. Overall, not a very appealing city, aesthetically or otherwise. Felt like one big bland shopping mall of concrete. Nice enough people, though.

In the past I have lived in Stuttgart so it was nice to return as a visitor. So much to see, so much nice food and wine to taste. Just ensure you have enough time to see one or more of the regions specialties. There are many !
