Visit Würzburg

The Fortress, the Residence in the city and the old Bridge are well worth seeing. The English guided tour with Anika was excellent. I could have done with more time there. Some lovely churches but I ran out of time. A glass of wine at the very quaint eating houses on the old bridge was a temptation!

We came to Wurzburg to visit the old U.S. Army Leighton Barracks, where my fiancé spent 3 1/2 years with her father in the 60s while in high school. Interesting to see how things have changed. It's definitely a university town now, with Leighton Barracks having been removed and replaced by College buildings. We drove up to the fortress but were disappointed that it was closed by the time we got there. (Car trouble).

It's a beautiful city. The Residenz is a marvel and the city has plenty of sights to marvel at. There are good connections to other parts of Bavaria (I had an easy day trip to Rothenburg while I was there).

Interesting town to visit. Some spectacular architecture but intermingled with a lot of 1970s concrete blocks. Town square was a lovely setting; we were there during the wine festival so town came alive in the evening. Not a lot of English spoken and menus in German ... We stopped over on a drive back from Austria and one night was enough.

Since Würzburg is a real student city, there is a lot of liveliness with plenty of nightlife. In addition, Würzburg is also very attractive for visitors who are more into cultural things, for example because of the residence in the city and the fortress on top of the mountain on the other side of the river Main. In addition, there are also dozens of beautiful churches to visit, of which the Käppele is perhaps the most beautiful. Würzburg also has a regional function, as a result of which many people from the neighborhood come to the city for shopping and a drink on a terrace. The shops are closed on Sundays (as everywhere in Germany), but even then it is wonderful to wander through the city and enjoy coffee and cake on one of the many terraces.

This is a great get a way town with plenty to do and see. We've made return visits. There is a 800 grill we ate at for steak...delicious but plan to spend some money. We also tried a hole in wall mexican which was so good! My pork tacos were close to papusa's in taste and texture. We also tried a great Beer and hamburger place (Beer 111?) Great with lots of Sports Screens. Only order one fry for 2-3 people. Getting around is easy...you don't need public transport unless you can't walk well.
