City Center
In downtown
The end of the Camino and the start of any journey to the city. Arriving pilgrims are greeted with a clash of old and new – the Renaissance-style Parador Hotel and neo-classical Rajoy Palace, with touts and t-shirt vendors waiting outside. Dart down the side streets to café and restaurant-filled Quintana dos Mortos or Platería for quieter climes.

In the heart of the Galicia region of Spain lies the city of Santiago de Compostela. Packed with history, culture and tradition, it was once a sacred city with pilgrims flocking from all over Europe.
The monuments and structures in Santiago de Compostela hold religious significance and remain some of the most visited sites. Catedral de Santiago is a centuries-old Christian monument and a spectacular example of a mixture of Gothic, Neoclassical and other architectural styles. Take some time to visit the Catedralicio Museum – located inside the cathedral – to get an understanding of the building’s historical value and see a number of exhibitions featuring tapestries and paintings.
Santiago de Compostela offers a treasure trove of history along with expansive green spaces where you can take in some fresh air and to catch a break from the city. Parque Galeras runs along the Sarela River with lawns providing walking paths, a children’s playground and stunning views of the city. Parque Belvis is another park surrounded by stone walls and is characterised by three labyrinths made from picturesque camellia hedges. Parque Alameda is a 16th-century park presenting fountains, flower gardens and ponds along with sport areas and a playground.
The Old Town of Santiago de Compostela is a UNESCO-listed site and is a traditional square with two parallel streets. Lined with quaint boutiques, elegant cafes and restaurants, a walk around this plaza is pleasant and gives off an old-world charm that attracts people from all over the world.

Santiago de Compostela is an amazing place.

Santiago de Compostela is an amazing place. If you are visiting, then you probably should stay 3 nights. There are a lot of museums, the cathedral is amazing, the tour, visiting the towers (you virtually climb the roof!) and nearby cities are breathtaking. For me, Santiago de Compostela is my spiritual home. And now about the food: tapas and their cuisine are heavenly good. We found a place called Galeon Toural - they stay open until very late, and their food is delicious. Try their local wine!

The city of Santiago itself, I mean the antique centre, is small, you don't need more than two days, however plan your trip to get to know more of Galicia, There are many wonderful places... The food then, oh my God
We were walking the Camino from Porto to Santiago.
December 12, 2022
We were walking the Camino from Porto to Santiago. Santiago is a great place to visit. We stayed in Santiago last year (2021) for four nights. We did do a tour to Finesterre and Murxia. This year we stayed one night then took the bus back to Porto. Santiago has lots to see. We were very fortunate this time at the Pilgrim's mass that we got to see the Botafumeiro. It was an incredible experience!

The staff was very helpful and the person uncharge of the Bar made us Sangria which was excellent. Also the person who was in charge of the breakfast, gave us good tips re the Church. However one point to improve is placing a tea and or a coffee making machine with Cups would add value to your hotel as well as the door locking devise ie the security card was not functioning well which also to be addressed as we came to down a few times on both days for help.other than that we were quite satisfied with the hotel and her services. I recommend
Beautiful city.

Beautiful city. Calm and peaceful. Very clean. I am not much of a traveller but needed to get away and so decided to do a solo trip. The tourism office is very helpful so please visit for any assistance. The airport bus to the city is just €1. So very economical for those on a budget. But please remember to have cash and wearing a mask is compulsory on the bus. I would recommend the walking tour as it gives an insight into the city and provides some valuable information which would otherwise be easily missed. Public toilets are very clean and no litters on the street. Visit the pilgrim museum is a must and it is free. Of course, the cathedral is the main attraction and it is free entry. There is no time limit and one can spend hours. Visitors are asked to leave when the service/mass is to begin unless they wish to stay for the entire service which is of an hour duration. There are days tours from the city if you have the time and would like to explore around. Alternatively you can hire a car from the airport which cost around €30 for a day. To summarize it, Santiago de Compostela is a must visit city and I highly recommend it.
