About Toledo

Including tips for the best time to visit Toledo

Since its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the walled city of Toledo has emerged as one of Spain’s cultural gems. Spend your days wandering through the city’s medieval streets or dip into an outdoor café as you admire views of the Tagus River and cathedral.

Formerly the capital of Spain until 1560, Toledo has remained unchanged since the 16th-century with many of its buildings surviving the effects of the Spanish Civil War. The Toledo Cathedral is perhaps the best example of Gothic architecture in the city, with grand interiors and alcoves housing a 22-tonne bell – the largest in Spain. Head to the Army Museum, Museo del Greco and the Museum of Santa Cruz to learn more about Toledo’s Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities and how it came to be known as the ‘City of Three Cultures’.

As the birthplace of the medieval cookbook, the ‘Book of Casseroles’, Toledo’s food scene is one of Europe’s best, so much so it was recognised as Spain’s Capital of Gastronomy in 2016. In Downtown Toledo, you’ll find over 70 restaurants serving casseroles and Manchego cheeses traditional to the La Mancha region. Alternatively, visitors looking to satiate a sweet tooth should check out the Confitería Santo Tomé for some artistic marzipan treats.

Located approximately 30 minutes from Madrid by high-speed train, Toledo is also accessible from many major European airports, creating the opportunity to explore the city across a day or weekend.

Toledo is one of the most unique historic towns in Spain, and travelers are lucky if they get to visit. Beware of driving in the historic parts, as there are lots of one-way roads and the streets can be very narrow. I mean, VERY narrow. But it's a fabulous place to explore on foot and there are lots of things to do and see.

Toledo is very beautiful with fabulous architecture including a stunning cathedral. If you like marzipan this is the place for you - so many shops sell this delicious treat that Toledo is known for. Many restaurants to choose from and we really enjoyed the tapas from the few we visited. The old town streets are quite narrow so be prepared to walk a lot or take a taxi. The covered escalators from the bus station are VERY helpful. The old synagogues are interesting to visit, with a museum and a wonderful shop in the Sinagoga del Tránsito.

We had had never visited Toledo before and decided to use it as a stop over on the way to the south coast as have always stayed in Madrid. We didn’t know what to expect but it was absolutely wonderful. A town rich in history and culture with so much to see and do at every turn. We left the car near to our apartment on the outskirts of town and walked in which was more than pleasurable. We stayed for 2 nights but in reality we could have stayed for a good few more days as there was so much to do.

Toledo is a very beautiful walled city with centuries of history with a heavy influence from the Moors which you see in the architecture and how the city is designed. At sunrise and sunset the city is literally golden! Toledo is made for walking and you can get blissfully lost in the winding streets and alleyways. So much to see and do with bars and restaurants on every corner. Will definitely be coming back.

A totally charming city.

A totally charming city. Wandering around the narrow streets was a pleasure in itself, and the variety of possible sites to visit was amazing. The only downside, if it is a downside, is that the city is built on hills, and so you are always going either up or down, which can be tiring at times.

Fabulous and compact town full of very interesting things to see and do. The are plenty of bars and restaurants so something for all tastes. I think I would choose a different time of year, Mid-sommer is very hot and I am told mid-winter is very cold
